  • The objective of this study was to propose a new framework for the creative engineering in the product family design coursework. The idea of product family design is a good solution to fulfill customer's requirements and to respond quickly for the technology change. Mass customization based on product family and product platform is a new paradigm with variety and customization through flexibility and quick responsiveness. In this study, the subjects of product family, product platform, product family map, platform leveraging strategy, morphological matrix and module based product family design were reviewed and presented. A new idea generation scheme utilizing SCAMPER method was combined with the morphological matrix approach. For the effective product family and platform design, creative efforts and approaches were utilized and implemented in the coursework process. This will help students to develop creative thinking and approaches in the engineering problem solving.

  • In this paper we present a generalized directional morphological filtering algorithm for the removal of impulse noise, which is based on a combination of impulse noise detection and a weighted rank-order morphological filtering technique. For salt (or pepper) noise suppression, the generalized directional opening (or closing) filtering of the input signal is selectively used. The detection of impulse noise can be done by the geometrical difference of opening and closing filtering. Simulations show that this new filter has better detail feature preservation with effective noise reduction compared to other nonlinear filtering techniques.

  • This paper investigates morphological theory as an intellectual framework for research and design. The first part of the paper will review morphological studies in the fields of urban geography, urban planning and architecture, particularly in England from the 1940s to the 1980s. While urban geographers and planners were concerned primarily with town plans, building forms and land use, architectural theoreticians were more interested in the topological relationship between urban and architectural space. The underlying premises and principles of these two approaches will be reviewed. The second part of the paper will focus on typology in Europe and North America. The reinterpretation of typology by Italian architects helped to bridge the gap between individual elements of architecture and the overall form of the city. However, typological theory became less accessible in post-war England and the United States. After 1980, the debate on typology became muted by the onset of vague notions such as functionalism, bio-technical determinism, and contextualism. This paper will propose a redefinition of morphology as a heuristic device, in contrast with the dichotomic view of urban morphology and architectural typology. Morphology will be shown to combine the geometrical and topological; the intentional and accidental; the real and abstract; and a priori and a posteriori. The last part of the paper discusses the lack of comparative theories and methods surrounding the physical form of architecture and the city by Korea commentators. Empirically rooted facility planning, non-comparative historical studies, and iconographic criticism emerged as a central preoccupation of architectural culture between the 1960s and 1980s, a time when international debate on architecture and urbanism was most intense. This paper will give consideration to the built environment as a dynamic physical entity and space as an epiphenomenon of daily urban life, such that collaboration between urban designers, architects, and landscape architects is seen as both beneficial and necessary.

  • Organic Modernism was inaugurated by Alvar Valto as an alternative plan to the formative limitation of Geometrical Modernism. It began to appear in the 1930s in the fields of Architecture, Furniture, Product Design and so on. It is known that began with organic formative language is closely related to surrealistic artists Andre Breton as well as other artists and sculptors in that era. Such Formative Language formalized a stream of Organic Modernism Furniture Design unique to the regional and cultural characteristics of Scandinavia. After crossing over to America, mass production of Furniture was born and new materials were linked by industrialization. The Characteristics of Organic Formation in Modern Art such as Three -Dimensional, Biological Morphological, Symbolical, Primitive, Fantastical, Non-Realistic, Incidental, Irregular, transmit to Furniture Design. They are as Characteristics especially with Three-Dimensional, Biological Morphological and Symbolical aspects. Histories of Art and design, there are some examples showing mutual Interchange between Functional and Artistic Character. This thesis also clarifies the Formative Relationship that the Furniture designers who pursued Functionality and Mass Production had obtained from Modern Artistic works and the Artists, through the process of comparing and researching the typical Artists and their works.

  • Form and function are not only the most important factors that tell the very essence of design morphology but also the fundamental factors that determine the existence of things. Th -erefore, approaching to the problems of them and the following practical morphological creation are the final goal of solving all the problems of design. Comparing with such importance and significance of the morphology, however there has been no conscious study nor logical achievement but only partial consideration about them. From this viewpoint, the substantial meanings, the intrinsic attributes and the typical patterns of them are inquired systematically and the whole through this study. Also their relations are identified with some appropriate views. As a result of this study, new knowledge base will be cons -tructed, and it will contribute to developing new morphological thinking and method which are especially strengthened these days.

  • In this study, we performed the psychological analysis on campus facilities for university students with the observation that the evaluation on the physical environment of the campus is related to the image evaluation of the campus users. Specifically, we investigated the cognitive structure and the image evaluation structure of users, i.e., students, on the architectural and morphological elements of campus buildings. The investigation results are summarized as follows. 1) The cognitive structure of students on the architectural and morphological elements was different from building to building. In the case of architectural elements, the campus buildings were rated high, if they were designed with emphasis on symbolic elements, while the campus buildings with simple design were rated low. However, the morphological elements exhibited the opposite results. 2) We extracted six factors by performing the factor analysis for image evaluation. From the analysis results, we found that students showed a different structure of image evaluation for each building. In addition, the image evaluation structures were found to be related with the cognitive structures on architectural and morphological elements. 3) We also performed the correlation analysis between image evaluation structure and cognitive structure on architectural and morphological aspects. The analysis results indicated that each building showed different correlation patterns. In addition, the overall image became better, as they appraised "clarity" and "uniformity" more highly.

  • In this paper, we propose a deep learning system based on morphological neural network(MNN). The deep learning layers are morphological operation layer, pooling layer, ReLU layer, and the fully connected layer. The operations used in morphological layer are erosion, dilation, and edge detection, etc. Unlike CNN, the number of hidden layers and kernels applied to each layer is limited in MNN. Because of the reduction of processing time and utility of VLSI chip design, it is possible to apply MNN to various mobile embedded systems. MNN performs the edge and shape detection operations with a limited number of kernels. Through experiments using database images, it is confirmed that MNN can be used as a deep learning system and its performance.

  • User Requirements are analyzed and quantified by decision making models and system engineering methods to select alternative concepts which satisfy the various requirements. In this study, the design concepts for guided missile are derived using Quality Function Deployment(QFD) and Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP). The design alternatives that satisfy the user requirements are extracted by QFD and Morphological Matrix, then the best design concept are obtained using AHP and Pugh concept Selection.
