  • This paper proposes a new VLSI architecture for morphological filters and presents its chip design and implementation. The proposed architecture can significantly reduce hardware costs compared with existing architecture by using a feedback loop path to reuse partial results and a decoder/encoder pair to detect maximum/minimum values. In addition, the proposed architecture requires one common architecture for both diltion and erosion and fewer number of operations. Moreover, it can be easily extended for larger size morphologica operations. We developed VHDL (VHSIC hardware description language) models, performed logic synthesis using the SYNOPSYS CAD tool. We used the SOG (sea-of-gate) cell library and implemented the actual chip. The total number of gates is only 2,667 and the clock frequency is 30 MHz that meets real-time image processing requirements.

  • During a survey of fungal diversity in different provinces of South Korea in 2017, a new fungal isolate was discovered. This fungal isolate was identified as Westerdykella reniformis, based on its morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis, using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and 28S ribosomal DNA (28S rDNA) sequence data. To our knowledge, W. reniformis has not previously been reported in South Korea. Thus, in this study, we report a new record of a species from the Dothideomycetes class in Korea, and provide a detailed description with morphological illustrations.

  • Ten stichotrichid ciliates were identified from six environmental samples, consisting of one freshwater, two seawater, and three soil samples. Morphological assessments were performed based on observations of both living and stained specimens. These species were assigned to two orders, three families, and nine genera, and we provide photographs and brief descriptions and remarks for each species: Parabirojimia similis Hu et al., 2002, Arcuseries warreni (Song & Wilbert, 1997) Huang et al., 2014, Gonostomum lajacola Foissner, 2016, Paragonostomoides xianicum Wang et al., 2017, Australocirrus oscitans Blatterer & Foissner, 1988, Monomicrocaryon crassicirratum Foissner, 2016, Monomicrocaryon euglenivorum fimbricirratum Foissner, 2016, Notohymena rubescens Blatterer & Foissner, 1988, Sterkiella multicirrata Li et al., 2018, Stylonychia ammermanni ammermanni Gupta et al., 2001.

  • Seventy-two lichen specimens of Cetrelia collected in South Korea since 2003 were examined by both phenotypic and phylogenetic analyses. The phenotypic analysis was based on morphological and chemical characters, and the phylogenetic analysis was based on nrDNA ITS sequences. The result suggested that the presence and absence of isidia, soredia, lobules and medullar reaction C+ or C- are the important characters in the taxonomy of this genus. Four species of Cetrelia, C. chicitae, C. braunsiana, C. japonica, and C. pseudolivetorum have been identified in this study. Description of each species is presented with morphological and chemical characters. A key to the Cetrelia species is also presented.

  • A cordycipitoid fungus infecting Hepialidae sp. in Nepal was supposed to be identical to Cordyceps liangshanensis, originally described from southwestern China, and thus, transferred to the genus Metacordyceps or Papiliomyces in previous studies. However, our multi-gene (nrSSU-nrLSU-tef-1α-rpb1-rpb2) phylogenetic and morphological studies based on the type specimen and additional collections of C. liangshanensis revealed that the fungus belongs to the genus Ophiocordyceps (Ophiocordycipitaceae). Therefore, a new combination O. liangshanensis was made, and a detailed description of this species was provided.

  • Penicillium is the most common fungal genus in various terrestrial and marine environments. The number of new and unrecorded Penicillium species from various substrates and habitats are continuously increasing. As part of a project to discover indigenous fungi in South Korea, three unrecorded Penicillium species were isolated from mudflats and seaweeds. Based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses of β-tubulin and calmodulin loci, they were identified as P. amaliae, P. infrabuccalum, and P. manginii. Here, we provide a detailed morphological description and sequence information of these previously unrecorded species.

  • Amylosporus sulcatus sp. nov. is described from Nonggang Nature Reserve, southern China, on the basis of morphological and molecular data. The morphological description and illustrations for the new species are provided. The species is characterized by pileate and stipitate basidiocarps. The pileus surface is obviously concentrically and radiately sulcate and tomentum, and the pore surface is snow white. Phylogenetic analyses based on sequences of the internal transcribed spacer and nuclear large subunit ribosomal DNA confirmed it to be a new species.

  • Jesogammarus (Jesogammarus) hinumensis Morino, 1993 was discovered firstly from a brackish water region in Jeju Island, Korea. To identification of the specimens we conducted both of morphological and molecular analyses. This species is characterized by having large eyes and a robust seta on the mandibular palp article 1. The morphology of this Korean specimens was well matched with the original description without variation. The mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I(COI) sequences of the present specimens were also completely identical to the sequences of J. (J.) hinumensis collected from the type locality of the species. Thus, we concluded that the Jesogammarus species from Jeju Island is J.(J.) hinumensis, based on both morphological and molecular data.
