  • This paper is intended as a study on how an utterance is divided into rhythmic units in Standard Korean with respect to its syntactic structure. With respect to the data in this study I used 150 sentences which contained similar number of words and various syntactic structures. Those sentences were read by 7 speakers of Seoul dialect in a conversation style. Each sentence was read twice in a normal speed and twice in a fast speed. As a total, 4200 sentences were recorded. Then listening to them, the author marked the sentences with two kinds of boundaries i.e. strong and weak. To explore the relationship between rhythmic units and syntactic structure I devised a framework of grammatical symbols. Each symbol is designed to have both syntactic and morphological information at the same time. So I assigned those grammatical symbols to the sentences. Having sentences marked with grammatical symbols on the one hand, and with the rhythmic boundaries on the other hand, 1 could show the relationship between rhythmic units and syntactic structure; which syntactic structures are likely to be pronounced as one rhythmic unit, and which are on the rhythmic boundaries.

  • Which syntactic function should we assign to the 'ga-type' constituent which occurs in the morphological passive constructions in Korean, [N0-neun N1-i Vpass-ending]? This problem is very important in two respects. First, a small change of status of the particle 'i/ga' can exert an overall influence on the Korean grammar. Second, the particle '-i/ga' cannot guarantee that 'ga-type' constituents are subject of the sentence, so that the concept of syntactic category should be distinguished from that of syntactic function. This paper claims that the analysis of sentence has long been focused on the structure of proposition, namely the argument structure and that the direction of analysis should be turned to the 'person structure' which can be revealed on the pragmatic level. On the basis of this, this paper suggests that the specific type of the morphological passive constructions in Korean, [N0-neun N1-i Vpass-ending] should be analysed in line with the psych-verb constructions and that the modal meaning 'potential' of the passive constructions is correlated with sentence pattern and 'person structure'.

  • The goal of this paper is to reanalyze the structure of 'eumcikha(음직하)' in Korean. We have several important previous works for it. This paper argued against previous works and pointed outd their problems. At first, this paper regarded the construction of 'eumcikha' as one of the modality dependent noun constructions. In this paper I proposed some possibilities of new structure of 'eumcikha'. 1) The structure of 'eumcikha' is not regarded as the 'embedded sentence+upper sentence' construction. 2) It is not also considered as the 'main verb+auxiliary verb' construction. 3) It is not recognized as a morphological one unit, although they have lots of in common. In this paper, I proposed that the construction of 'eumcikha' has both syntactic property and morphological property. Owing to these properties, it is so difficult to determine the structure of it.

  • One main complexity of the copula constructions concerns a mismatch between morphology and syntactic constituency: the copula seems to form a morphological unit with the immediately preceding element, whereas in terms of syntax the copula appears to take this as its syntactic complement. In capturing such mismatches, we show that the copula is treated as an independent verb at the level of tectogrammatical structure (or syntax tree), whereas as a bound morpheme at the level of phonogram-matical structure (or domain tree), in terms of Dowty 1992 (or Reape 1994). This paper, adopting the notion of DOMAIN in HPSG, shows that copula constructions are a subtype of compacting-constructions. These constructions compact the domain value of the copula and that of its preceding element together into one domain unit, eventually making it inert to syntactic phenomena such as scrambling, deletion and pro-form substitution. This construction-based approach provides a clean analysis for the formation of the copula construction and related phenomena.

  • conflicting criterial used in identifying words have called the lexical integrity principle into question. That is, cases where the morphological word does not coincide with the syntactic word have notivated the syntactic view of word derivation, as pointed out by Bresnan and Mchombo(1995). Further, the implicit desire to make the clausal structure of Korean parallel to those posited for English(Chomsky 1991) and French(Pollock 1989) has also led most of the current literature on Korean morphology to claim that Korean verbal inflections head their own functional projections such as AgrP, TP, and MP im syntax. In this paper, I will first argue against such a syntactic view. After reviewing some basic properties of Korean verbal inflections, I will show that the evidence from mismatch phenomena supports the lexical integrity principle over the head-movement theories of word derivation. Then, I will propose a theory of lexical grammar which maintains the lexical integrity principle while retaining the effects of functional projections and syntactic movement.

  • This paper investigates tonal patterns of the prosodic constituents of an AP and a PWD in Korean and their relation with the morphological/syntactic structure. Specifically, this paper asks the following questions: First, if there are more than one PWD in an AP, how is each PWD specified in terms of tones? Secondly, in case that there is only one PWD in an AP that consists of several morphemes, is there any preference of the association between tones and the morphemes that constitute that PWD? Thirdly, if an AP dominates a PWD and if a PWD contains at least one morpheme of the lexical category, it follows that an AP should contain at least one morpheme of the lexical category. Can this be verified with the experimental data? In order to answer these questions, Experiment I and II were conducted with the target material consisting of a stem and suffixes that varied in length. The results of this preliminary test show that as the number of syllables in the target material increases, the more number of an AP tonal pattern occurs in it and as a result, in some cases, an AP consisting of suffixes only may occur.

  • This study explores the lexical-semantic structure of derived causative verbs in Korean based on Pustejovsky(1995)'s Generative Lexicon Theory (GL), Mor-phological causative verbs are derived from their root stems by affixing ‘-i, -hi, -li, -gi’ in Korean and the meanings of derived predicates are closely related to the meanings of their root verbs. In particular, the change of the ARGUMENT STRUCTURE by morphological derivation leads to the change of the EVENT STRUCTURE. In this study, causation is defined as the cause-effect relation having a causer. The ARGUMENT STRUCTURES of derived causative verbs includes a causer argument, which is added to the ARGUMENT STRUCTURE of their root verbs. Their EVENT STRUCTURE has a headed process related to a causer and their result is the event which their root verbs represent. This approach can also suggest that the (in)directness of causative is determined by which verb is its root and explain the difference between the morphological causativization and the syntactic causativization in Korean.

  • In this work, we have presented ATSA, a hierarchical attention deep learning model for Arabic sentiment analysis. ATSA was proposed by addressing several challenges and limitations that arise when applying the classical models to perform opinion mining in Arabic. Arabic-specific challenges including the morphological complexity and language sparsity were addressed by modeling semantic composition at the Arabic morphological analysis after performing tokenization. ATSA proposed to perform phrase-chunks sentiment embedding to provide a broader set of features that cover syntactic, semantic, and sentiment information. We used phrase structure parser to generate syntactic parse trees that are used as a reference for ATSA. This allowed modeling semantic and sentiment composition following the natural order in which words and phrase-chunks are combined in a sentence. The proposed model was evaluated on three Arabic corpora that correspond to different genres (newswire, online comments, and tweets) and different writing styles (MSA and dialectal Arabic). Experiments showed that each of the proposed contributions in ATSA was able to achieve significant improvement. The combination of all contributions, which makes up for the complete ATSA model, was able to improve the classification accuracy by 3% and 2% on Tweets and Hotel reviews datasets, respectively, compared to the existing models.

  • Every language employs its own morphological and syntactic ways of expressing gradable concepts and making comparison between properties of two objects. Korean uses the adverb te 'more' and the post-position pota 'than' to express such relations objects, but displays quite different grammatical properties from a language like English. This paper shows how a constraint-based grammar, HPSG, can provide a robust basis for the grammatical analysis of Korean comparative constructions.

  • This paper presents the development of a morphological processor for the Mongolian language, based on the two-level morphological model which was introduced by Koskenniemi. The aim of the study is to provide Mongolian syntactic parsers with more effective information on word structure of Mongolian words. First hand written rules that are the core of this model are compiled into finite-state transducers by a rule tool. Output of the compiler was edited to clarity by hand whenever necessary. The rules file and lexicon presented in the paper describe the morphology of Mongolian nouns, adjectives and verbs. Although the rules illustrated are not sufficient for accounting all the processes of Mongolian lexical phonology, other necessary rules can be easily added when new words are supplemented to the lexicon file. The theoretical consideration of the paper is concluded in representation of the morphological phenomena of Mongolian by the general, language-independent framework of the two-level morphological model.
