  • Sequences of ribosomal internal transcribed spaces (ITS) obtained from two Antrobia species and two related species were compared to investigate intrageneric and intergeneric phylogenetic relationships of Antrodia. The results showed that Antrodia species causing a brown rot in wood did not form a monophyletic clade and were separated into three distinct groups. Antrodia gossypina and A. vaillantii formed a clade having rhizomorphs as a homologous character. Antrodia serialis, A. sinuosa, and A. malicola formed a group together with Daedalea, Fomitopsis, and Postia species with brown rot habit. Antrodia xantha with a trimitic hyphal system and amyloid skeletal hyphae formed another distinct clade form other Antrodia species. The Antrodia species were separated from white rot genera such as Antrodiella, Diplomitoporus, Junghuhnia, and Steccherinum, indicating the phylogenetic importance of the rot type in the classification of the Polyporaceae.

  • A taxonomic study of Peltigera in South Korea was performed. The phylogenetic analysis based on nr DNA internal transcribed spacer sequences suggests that Peltigera is a well-supported monophyletic group. Important characteristics are the phycobiont type of thallus and the vein type at the lower cortex (wide and flat, or narrow and ridged). The vertical or horizontal arrangement of the apothecia is also important in distinguishing species in this genus. Eleven species of Peltigera were revealed and confirmed, which included one new record, P. elisabethae. A description of each species is presented with morphological, anatomic, and chemical characteristics, and comparisons between similar species are made. A key to the species is also presented.

  • Parmotrema clavuliferum ($R{\ddot{a}}s{\ddot{a}}nen$) Streimann and P. reticulatum (Taylor) M. Choisy (Parmeliaceae, lichenized Ascomycotina) have similar morphological characters such as wide lobes with soralia, reticulate-maculate on upper surface of lobes, and marginal cilia. In addition, they both produce salazinic acid and atranorin as major chemical substances. These similar properties found in both species have led to confusion in recognizing them as distinct species; however, P. clavuliferum is distinguished from the latter by capitate soralia on short laciniae which are always mottled white and by the production of fatty acid and gyrophoric acid together with salazinic acid. In addition, the most likely phylogenetic tree of these species shows that they are nested in well-supported monophyletic groups. Therefore, it is reasonable to recognize them as two separate species, P. clavuliferum and P. reticulatum.

  • We describe a newly recorded brittle star to South Korea, Amphiura (Amphiura) digitula (H.L. Clark, 1911), that was collected from Geoje Island, at a depth of 47 m. The species is characterized by a small disk, covered by numerous fine scales, small radial shields that are wider than long, a small stumpy hook at the distal end of the radial shield, two tooth papilla, two adoral shield spines, 2nd adoral shield spine longer than other, tapered dramatically toward dull tip, five arms with four proximal arm spines, and two tentacle scales. We also obtained a 657 bp sequence from COI gene and the amplified sequence matched the general DNA barcoding region. The NJ and ML phylogenetic analyses revealed A. (A.) digitula as monophyletic in the Amphiura clade. This species is clearly distinguished from other Amphiura species by morphological characteristics and the mitochondrial COI sequence, and thus represents the sixth Amphiura species reported to occur in Korea.

  • Monoraphidium subclavatum (FBCC-A409) of this study clustered in the same clade as Messastrum gracile strains in the 18S rDNA phylogeny. Compared to Messastrum gracile, Monoraphidium subclavatum did not form a colony, and the curvature of the cell was slightly curved or slightly crescent-shaped. This result means that the genus Monoraphidium is still based on the morphospecies concept, and was not monophyletic and not distinguishable as a separate genus. Two Stichococcus-like strains of this study (NIBRCL0000114567, NIBRCL0000114571) belong to Deuterostichococcus epilithicus and Pseudostichococcus monallantoides respectively in phylogenetic analysis using 18S rDNA sequences. These two species are consistent with recent research in the morphology and the genetic analyses using 18S and ITS rDNA sequences. We reported M. subclavatum, D. epilithicus, and P. monallantoides as newly recorded species in Korea.

  • Three monophyletic branches are strongly supported in a phylogenetic analysis of the Teloschistaceae based on combined data sets of internal transcribed spacer and large subunit nrDNA and 12S small subunit mtDNA sequences. These are described as new monotypic genera: Jasonhuria S. Y. Kondr., L. Lőkös et S. -O. Oh, Loekoesia S. Y. Kondr., S. -O. Oh et J. -S. Hur and Olegblumia S. Y. Kondr., L. Lőkös et J. -S. Hur. Three new combinations for the type species of these genera are proposed.

  • Partial sequence comparisons of mitochondrial small subunit rDNA (mt SSU rDNA) were used to examine taxonomic and evolutionary relationships among seven Penicillium species : two monoverticillate species, two biverticillate species, and three terverticillate species. Amplified fragments of mt SSU rDNA highly varied among seven species in size, suggesting the existence of multiple insertions or deletions in the region. A phylogengtic tree was constructed by exhaustive search of parsimony analysis. The phylogenetic tree distinguished two statistically supported monophyletic groups, one for two monoverticillate species and the other for three terverticillate species and ont biverticillate species, P. vulpinum. The phylogenetic relationship of P. waksmanii, the biverticillate species, was not clear.

  • The truffle and ectomycorrhizal roots formed by Tuber sp. were collected from the rhizosphere of Quercus aliena in Korea. The morphological characteristics of the ascoma, and molecular phylogenetic analysis using sequences from the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit (LSU) of ribosomal DNA, translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF), and RNA polymerase second largest subunit (RPB2) regions confirmed the distinct morphology of the truffle. This truffle belongs to a monophyletic clade among the other Tuber species in the phylogeny. This study describes the truffle, Tuber koreanum, as a new species reported from Korea.

  • Dracocephalum rupestre Hance is a perennial herb distributed across China, Mongolia, and Korea. This study reports the first complete chloroplast genome sequence of D. rupestre. The plastome is 151,230 bp long and exhibits a typical quadripartite structure comprising a large single-copy region of 82,536 bp, a small single-copy region of 17,408 bp, and a pair of identical inverted repeat regions of 25,643 bp each. It contains 130 genes, comprising 85 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis of D. rupestre and related species of Lamiaceae showed that the genus Dracocephalum is a monophyletic group, and D. rupestre is most closely related to D. psammophilum.

  • The genus Rhogadopsis Brethes, 1913 (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Opiinae), which mostly parasitizes mining flies (Diptera: Agromyzidae), has been considered to subgenus in the genus Opius Wesmael, 1835. However, according to having the derived wing venation and forming a monophyletic clade, the genus Rhogadopsis is elevated to generic rank. As results of faunal survey in Yeoseo-do, Jeonnam, South Korea, the male specimen of Rhogadosis obliqua were collected by sweeping. Diagnosis, description, distribution and diagnostic illustration of Rhogadopsis obliqua are provided.
