  • Kinetic tests on pyrolysis of the mixture of waste automobile lubricating oil and polystyrene were carried out with thermogravimetric technique at the heating rates of 0.5, 1.0, $2.0^{\circ}C/min$ in a stirred batch reactor. The activation energy and the reaction order were determined at conversions of 1 to 100% using differential method. The mixture of waste automobile lubricating oil and polystyrene was pyrolyzed at lower temperature rather than waste automobile lubricating oil and polystyrene. respectively. Also, the thermal decomposition took place in two broad reaction steps. The pyrolyzed oil of mixture represented high selectivity of styrene monomer and dimer like that of polystyrene pyrolyzed products.

  • A molecular imprinted polymer (MIP) using (+)catechin ((+)C) as a template and acrylamide (AM) as a functional monomer was prepared. Acetonitrile was used as the porogen with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as the crosslinker and 2,2'-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) as the initiator. The adsorption isotherms in the MIP were measured and the parameters of the equilibrium isotherms were estimated by linear and nonlinear regression analyses. The linear equation for original concentration and adsorpted concentrations was then expressed, and the adsorption equilibrium data were correlated into Langmuir, Freundlich, quadratic, and Langmuir Extension isotherm models. The mixture compounds of (+)C and epicatechin (EC) show competitive adsorption on specific binding sites of the (+)catechin-MIP. The adsorption concentrations of (+)C, epicatechin (EC), epicatechin gallate (ECG), and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), on the (+)catechin-molecular imprinted polymer were compared. Through the analysis, the (+)catechin-molecular imprinted polymer showed higher adsorption ability than blank polymer which was synthesized molecular imprinted polymer without (+)catechin. Furthermore, the competitive Langmuir isotherms were applied to the mixture compounds of (+)C and EC.

  • The effects of surfactant on the electro-optic properties of holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal(HPDLC) have been studied hoping to increase the diffraction efficiency and to reduce the anchoring energy at interfaces. Octanoic acid(OA) was used as sulfactant. The 2,2,2 trifluoroethyl acrylate(TFEA) was added to the monomer mixture to enhance the phase separation and improve optical properties. The morphology of holographic gratings was examined using scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Addition of surfactant was likely to reduce the surface anchoring of the nematic droplet with the polymer surface which favors lowering of the swiching field and to improve the optical qualities.

  • NiZn-ferrite was synthesized usign waste iron oxide catalysts which were produced from styrene monomer process and buried underground as an industrial wastes. The spinel type ferrite was obtained by calcination and sintering of the mixture of finely ground waste catalysts, nickel oxide and zinc oxide powders. The sintered body of Ni/sub 0.5/Zn/sub 0.5/Fe₂O₄ composition at 1230℃ for 5 hours showed the density of 5.38g/㎤, and initial permeability of 59 at 1 kHz. Not only cerium oxide, which existed as a major component in the catalyst, but also unicorporated NiO and ZnO into spinel structure remained as second phases after sintering.

  • Monodisperse silica nanospheres were synthesized by Stober method using rotating cylinder systems with batch or continuous manner. The particle size could be controlled by adjusting the reactant compositions such as the amount of monomer, catalyst, and water in the reaction mixture. The size and monodispersity of the ceramic particles could be controlled by changing the reaction medium with different alcohols other than ethanol or changing the reaction temperature. The effect of Taylor number (Ta) on the average diameter and standard deviation of silica particles were also studied by adjusting the rotation speed of inner cylinder, and the maximum diameter of particles was observed at Ta ${\approx}3,000$.

  • In the current research, the curing kinetics of a mixture system consisting of a Bisphenol-A type vinyl ester resin and styrene monomer was studied. Methylethylketone peroxide and cobalt octoate were used as the polymerization initiator and accelerator respectively. Thermograms with several different heating rates were obtained using non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry. Activation energy values analyzed by the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa isoconversional method showed a three-step change with conversion ${\alpha}$: a slight decrease initially for ${\alpha}$ < 0.1, a constant value of 47.9 kJ/mol in the range 0.1 < ${\alpha}$ < 0.7, and a slow increase for 0.7 < ${\alpha}$. When assuming a constant activation energy of 47.9 kJ/mol, an autocatalytic model of the Sestak-Berggren equation was considered as the proper mathematical model of the conversion function, indicating an overall order of 1.2.

  • In this work, a gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) was prepared using polyoxyalkylene glycol acrylate (POAGA) as a macromonomer LiCoO$_2$/GPE/graphite cells were prepared and their electrochemical properties were evaluated at various current densities and temperatures. The ionic conductivity of the GPE was more than 6.2${\times}$10$^{-3}$ S$.$$cm^{-1}$ / at room temperature. The GPE had good electrochemical stability up to 4.5 V vs. Li/Li$^{+}$. POAGA-based cells were showed good electrochemical performances such as rate capability, low-temperature performance, and cycleability. The cells, also, passed a safety test such as the overcharge and nail-penetration test.t.

  • Surface of crystalline silica was sequentially reacted with silane(A 187), liquid $rubber(CTBN{\times}8)$, and vinyl monomer(GMA) in existence of TEA(triethylamine) or BPO(benzoyl peroxide). It was mixed with epoxy resin at a ratio $0{\times}60%$ (vol. % ) of total component. For mixtures, viscous properties were investigated experimentally. 1) Coating ratio depended on pH of mixture and quantity of catalyst. 2) Treated silica represented lower viscosity than untreated. 3) Thixotropic index represented best at silica_content $15{\sim}23%$ and showed more large deviation over $120^{\circ}C$. 4) Relative viscosity followed kernel's at $0{\times}10%$ of silica content and get out of Mooney's at more than 15%.

  • A new and useful poly(ethylene oxide)-based pH-sensitive block copolymer is introduced. Poly(ethylene oxide-b-N-phenylmaleimide) was first synthesized by anionic polymerization of N-phenylmaleimide (N-PMI) using mixed alkali metal polymeric alkoxide by sequential monomer addition method in the mixture of benzene/THF/DMSO (10/5/3, v/v/v) at room temperature. Reductive deimidation of the resulting block copolymer was performed using hydrazine monohydrate leading to the formation of the corresponding pH-sensitive poly(ethylene oxide-b-maleic acid).

  • Plasma polymerized thin films was prepared using an interelectrod inductively coupled gas-flow-type reactor. Styrene was chosen as the monomer to be used. This thin films were also delineated by the electron-beam apparatus with an acceleration voltage 30kV, and the pattern in the resist was developed with RIE 80 with argon gas mixture ratio, pressure and RF power. The molecular structure of thin films was investigated by GPC and FT-IR and then was discussed in relation to its quality as a resist. In the case of plasma polymerization, thickness of resist could be controlled by discharge duration and power. Also etch rate is increased as to growing pressure with RIE 80.
