  • The objetives of this study are to find the economic feasibility of the polyculture and to give the economic information of the polyculture for aquaculture fishermen. The polyculture is defined as the rearing of several species together to make more efficient use of the growing space and the total ground environment. The economic feasibility analysis in the polyculture involves the profitability, the productivity, and the risk reduction effect. The results of the economic feasibility analysis in the polyculture are as follows; First, in the profitability analysis, the solid utilization of ground in the polyculture is more profitable than the monoculture. The profitability owing to the plane utilization of the ground in the polyculture is positioned between those of the monoculture of each speices. Second, in the productivity analysis, oyster and sea squirt are diminishing returns to scale. Third, the variation on the average rate of return in the polyculture products is smaller than that of the monoculture. Finally, the result of comparison between the polyculture and the monoculture shows that the polyculture in coastal area is more profitable and more efficient than the monoculture. Most of cultivating species are selective in their diet Thus, stocking different kinds of cultivating species will efficiently utilize space and food It seems that polyculture is more appropriate for those species that live in different ecological niches. We think that the production per unit of ground can be increased, and the fixed cost per unit of output be reduced, so the polyculture is more profitable than the monoculture. Based on the above results, we concludes that the polyculture is economically feasible when profitability and productivity are increased and simultaneously the variation of average rate of return in the polyculture is smaller than that of the monoculture.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of pasture types(mixture and mono tall fescue pasture) and endophyte infection on the animal behavior of Korean native cattle at the Experimental Field of Grassland and Forage Crops Division, National Livestock Research Institute, Suweon, in 1994. The results obtained are sumunarized as follows: DM intake of Korean native cattle was increased with mixture and endophyte-free tall fescue for both pasture types. Mixture and endophyte-free tall fescue showed good animal preference. Daily grazing time was increased with mixture and endophyte-free tall fescue in monoculture, while annual grazing period was increased with monoculture and endophyte-infect tall fescue. Amount of drinking water of Korean native cattle was increased with tall fescue monoculture rather than mixture, however the amount of drinking water was higher with endophyte-infect tall fescue in monoculture. Salt intake of Korean native cattle was increased with mixture and endophyte-6ee tall fescue in monoculture. Rectal temperature of Korean native cattle was not influenced by pasture types and endophyte infection. Based on the results of this experiment, DM intake of Korean native cattle and daily grazing time were increased by mixture and endophyte-free tall fescue with good quality.

  • Organic farming is rapidly expanding worldwide. Crop growth in organic systems greatly depends on the functions performed by soil microbes, and nutrient supply weed suppression by green manure crops input. Four red-pepper production systems were compared: 1) bare ground (conventional system); 2) hairy vetch monoculture; 3) rye monoculture; and 4) hairy vetch-rye mixture. Soil inorganic N reached the peak at 30 DAI and hairy vetch monoculture was the highest ($192mg\;kg^{-1}$) and soil total carbon was fluctuated sporadically during the experiment. Carbohydrate and phenolic compounds in soil kept significantly higher in green manure crops systems from 10 DBI to 30 DAI, however the level was the maximum at 10 DBI (carbohydrate) and 30 DAI (phenolic comounds). Incorporation of green manure crops residue enhanced soil microbial biomass C and N throughout the growing season except that MBN in rye was reduced after incorporation. Green manure crops systems suppressed weed occurrence and, in particular, it was prominent in rye monoculture. Mineral elements composition and production in red-pepper fruits were markedly decreased in green manure crops systems although hairy vetch monoculture has come close to bare ground (NPK-applied). Therefore, it was suggested that higher biomass production should be performed not only to improve soil quality and suppress weeds but to yield suitable red-pepper fruits in green manure crops-based organic farming.

  • Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is an important forage legume grown in Kansas, USA and its productivity with cool-season grasses however is unknown. The objective of this study was to determine the dry matter yield (DMY) and forage nutritive value of alfalfa-grass mixtures compared to those of alfalfa and grasses grown in monoculture with and without nitrogen fertilization. Three different alfalfa varieties were planted (reduced-lignin alfalfa, Roundup Ready, and conventional alfalfa) and two kinds of cool-season grasses (smooth brome, Bromus inermis Leyss, and tall fescue, Festuca arundinacea Schreb) were planted as a monoculture or in alfalfa-grass mixtures. Nitrogen fertilizer (urea) was applied at green-up at a rate of 56 kg/ha and after the second cutting at a rate of 56 kg/ha in 2016 and 2017, respectively. and control treatments received no nitrogen. DMY was significantly higher in monoculture alfalfa and alfalfa-grass mixtures than in grass monocultures. Between alfalfa monoculture and alfalfa-grass mixtures, no significant differences in DMY were found. For all treatments, nitrogen application significantly increased DMY compared to the control. In 2016 and 2017, the low-lignin alfalfa monoculture had the lowest acid detergent fiber (ADF) and the grass monocultures had the highest ADF. In 2016 and 2017, neutral detergent fiber (NDF) in smooth bromegrass and tall fescue was higher than in other species treatments. A low-lignin alfalfa monoculture had significantly lower NDF concentration compared to alfalfa-grass mixtures. When averaged over 2016 and 2017, relative feed value (RFV) was highest in low-lignin alfalfa and lowest in the grass monocultures. In both years, nitrogen fertilizer application did not affect nutritive values.

  • The objective of this study is to suggest the improvement method of the profitability in our marine fish culture business. So I investigated the actual condition for aquaculture farms in South Sea coast by the question and actual survey. 1 recognized the following facts; 1) The marine floating netcage system are a great portion in two province - Kyeongnam and Cheunnam, 2) The rockfish are reared absolutely much more than the olive flounder, 3) The polyculture by various species are more carried out than the monoculture of the olive flounder or rockfish, etc. I analyzed the profitability in olive flounder monoculture, rockfish monoculture, olive flounder and rockfish polyculture, and rockfish polyculture taking turns year by year respectively. At a result I comfirmed that the net income to net sales was the highest in the olive flounder monoculture bacouse the olive flounder,s sale price was higher than rockfish price. But internal rate of return(IRR) and net present value(NPV) were high in the olive flounder and rockfish polyculture or the rockfish taking turns polyculture. The reasons were alttributed to their high utility of a netcage and to reduction of a capital cost. So, I suggest 1) to feed the bigger product in short term, 2) to reduction of a feed and seed cost, 3) to increase a survival rate of fish and 4) to enlarge production by highly utilizing a netcage. And I recognized that a aquaculture manager should make constantly an effort to gain more profit by rearing more good products and by reducing a production cost.

  • Interspecific relationship between a euryhaline rotifer Brachionus rotundiformis and a cyclopoid copepod Apocyclops borneoensis was investigated in the laboratory culture. In a mixed culture of B. rotundiformis and A. borneoensis, population growth of B. rotundiformis was suppressed from day 10, while growth in a monoculture population continuously increased throughout the experimental period. However, the population growth of A. borneoensis in the mixed culture did not markedly differ from that in a monoculture population. Suppression of B. rotundiformis growth coincided with a decrease in the numbers of both non-egg-bearing and egg-bearing females, and increasing resting egg formation. Growth of A. borneoensis was not affected by the presence of the rotifer. However, relative growth index of ovisac bearing females in the mixed culture was 1.62 times higher than that in the monoculture. Presence of the copepod did not greatly reduce the food available to the rotifer population. The rotifer B. rotundiformis responded in a unique way, to stresses such as physical damage (filtering by A. borneoensis) with the production of many resting eggs to increase its chances of survival.

  • Macrophyte plays an important role in purification of wastewater. They have capacity to improve the water quality by absorbing nutrients, with their effective root system. In this study, removal of nutrient as well as organic matter was observed by some important macrophytes i.e. Pistia stratoites, Hydrocharis dubia and Salvinia sp. indepe ndently as well as in mixed culture under the laboratory condition. The highest total nitrogen removal was observed for Pistia stratoites (86.47%) in monoculture and Salvinia sp. + P. stratoites (76.11%) in mixed culture system. Corresponding figures for total phosphorous were observed for P. stratoites (75.60%) in monoculture and Salvinia sp. + P. stratoites (71.11%) in mixed culture system. Similar result was observed for ammonia removal in both systems. Additionally, P. stratoites showed the highest removal of organic matter, in monoculture system (68.46%) where as Salvinia sp. + P. stratoites showed the highest removal of organic matter in mixed culture system (82.73 %).

  • Significant efforts are being devoted in mitigating the urban heat island effect, and extensive green roofs are an option for mitigation. The purpose of this study was to compare the surface temperature, vegetation types, and plant species on an extensive green roof. Test beds were created in May 2015, and the surface temperature was monitored from June to August. The test beds comprised polyculture and monoculture. Polyculture was divided into three types, and monoculture comprised eight plant species. An extensive green roof is effective in reducing temperature by forming a shade and preventing sunlight from falling on the surface of buildings, which mitigates the urban heat island effect. Consequently, the surface temperature of the green roof and that of concrete during summer reduced from $17.8^{\circ}C$ to $7.3^{\circ}C$. The temperature reduction was greater on using polyculture than on using monoculture, but monocultures of Sedum takesimense, Hemerocallis dumortieri, Allium senescens, Aster yomena, Belamcanda chinensis, and Aster koraiensis also produced good results. The temperature reduction effects of Polygonatum odoratum var. pluriflorum f. variegatum, Phlox subulata, and Thymus quinquecostatus var. japonica were excellent compared with those of concrete but were less than those of other plant species. Careful attention is needed for the management of extensive green roofs. Studies on the plant species and types of extensive green roof should continue to mitigate the urban heat island effect.

  • The purpose of this study was to optimize the conditions of continuous mixed culture of C.butyricum and R. spaeroides K-7, which were able to produce hydrogen using biomass-dreived substrate. To investigate the possibility of continuous culture, semi-continuous culture was carried out for 20 days. In semi-continuous culture using the reactor system, the replacement rate of fresh medium was 30% of total medium volume for the highest hydrogen evolution. In continuous culture, the optimum dilution rate was determined to be 0.05$h^{-1}$. The continuous culture produced 3.1 times as compared with the hydrogen on batch culture. On the other hand, the continuous mixed culture produced 1.3~2.1 times as much as hydrogen of the continuous monoculture of C. butyricum. When 10g of glucose in the media (1l) was supplied as a carbon source on continuous culture, mixed culture of C. butyricum and R. sphaeroides K-7 increased hydrogen evolution rate. Because considerable amount of glutamate was contained in waste water of glutamate fermentation, utilization of glutamate was examined in mixed culture. As a result of examination, production of hydorgen was slightly inhibited by high concentration of glutamate, more than 20mM, on continuous monoculture of R. sphaeroides K-7. On the other hand, both on continuous monoculture of C. butyricum and on mixed culture of C. butyricum and R. sphaeroides K-7, production of hydrogen was not inhibited by high concentration of glutamate such as 100mM. Hence this suggests that high concentration of waste water can be used as good substrate for hydrogen production on monoculture of C. butyricum and mixed culture of C. butyricum and R. sphaeroides K-7.

  • This experiment was canied out to investigate the effect of pasture types(mixture and mono tall fescue pasture) and endophyte infection on the dry matter yield, forage quality and animal performance of pasture plants at the Experimental Field of Grassland and Forage Crops Division, National Livestock Research Institute, Suweon, in 1994. The results obtained are surmmarized as follows : DM yield of tall fescue monoculture was significantly higher(p<0.05) than that of mixture pasture, while DM yield of endophyte-infected pasture was significantly higher(p<0.05) than that of endophyte-free for two pasture types. Crude protein yield(CPY) of tall fescue monoculture was significantly higher(p<0.05) than that of mixture, and the higher CPY with endophyte-infect tall fescue for both pasture types resulted from higher DM yield of the pastures. NDF and ADF contents of pasture plants were not influenced by pasture types, and there was no difference for NDF and ADF contents between endophyte-infect and -free pasture mixture, however, those of pasture plants were increased with endophyte-infect tall fescue in monoculture. IVDMD of pasture plants was increased with mixture and endophyte-free tall fescue for both pasture types. IVDMD of pasture plants was greatly influenced by pasture types and endophyte infection. There were no significant differences in average daily gain of Korean native cattle between pasture types, but those of the cattle were significantly increased with endophyte-free tall fescue for both pasture types(p<0.05). Based on the results of this experiment, it is suggested that a slightly more forage yield could be obtained , from monoculture and endophyte-infected tall fescue. However, liveweight gain was increased by mixture and endophyte-free tall fescue with good quality.
