  • New photodynamic herbicidal 2,3-dihydro-2,2,4,5,6-pentamethylbenzofuran-5-yl, (I) and 2,3-dihydro-2-ethyl-2,4,5,6-tetramethylbenzofuran-5-yl, (II) substituents in 6-benzofury-2-[1-( alkoxyimino )alkyl]-3 hydroxycyclohex-2-en-1-one derivatives were synthesized and their herbicidal activities against rice plant (Oryza sativa L.), barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) and pickerel weed (Monochoria vaginalis presl.) were measured under submerged pre and post-emergence conditions. Particularly, a series of (I) compounds showed good selective herbicidal activities between the 3 leaf stage of rice plant and barnyard grass at rates of $0.25{\sim}0.0007kg/ha$. The structure activity relationships (SAR) on the herbicidal activity with changing N-alkoxy groups were discussed quantitatively. According to the SAR results, it was expected that the selectivity factor between seed of rice plant and barnyard grass should be rely on the N-alkoxy groups with bigger dipole moment and bigger (or smaller) $B_3$ constant than optimal value $(B_3)_{opt.}=4.41{\AA}$. Compared with (I), the (II) substituents showed more superior herbicidal activities.

  • Surveys of weed species in paddy fields were conducted to identify weed occurrence on July 2013. Total 237 sites of paddy fields in 9 City/Gun, Jeonnam Provinces in Korea were investigated. From the survey, 45 weed species in 18 families were identified and classified to 33 annuals and 15 perennials. Based on the occurrence ratio, the most weed species belonged to Poaceae (9 species) and 8 and 4 weed species belonged to Cyperaceae and Scrophulariaceae, respectively. These 21 weed species in the most four families accounted for 46% of total weed occurrence. The most dominant weed species in Korean paddy fields were Echinochloa spp. (18.5%), followed by Monochoria vaginalis (12.3%), Lemna perpusilla (8.2), Eleocharis kuroguwai (5.2%) and Scirpus juncoides (5.2%). The most dominant weed species in machine transplanting paddy fields were Echinochloa spp. (14%), followed by Monochoria vaginalis (12%) and in water seeded rice paddy fields were Echinochloa spp. (25%), followed by Monochoria vaginalis (11%). This information could be useful for estimation of future weed occurrence, weed population dynamics and establishment of weed control methods in paddy fields.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the herbicidal efficacy of flucetosulfuron+pyrazosulfuron-ethyl against Eleocharis kuroguwai and Scirpus planiculmis and to investigate tank-mix of flucetosulfuron + pyrazosulfuron-ethyl with bentazone and 2,4-D to control sulfonylurea resistant Monochoria vaginalis and Scirpus juncoides. In controlling E. kuroguwai, flucetosulfuron + pyrazosulfuron-ethyl showed 75% control, lower than that (95%) of bentazone + MCPA, at 29 DAA (days after application), while at 60 DAA it showed 90%, greater than that of (78%) of bentazone + MCPA, with greater control than penoxsulam at all times. In case of Scirpus planiculmis control, flucetosulfuron + pyrazosulfuron-ethyl showed lower activity than bentazone + MCPA but greater than penoxsulam. Flucetosulfuron + pyrazosulfuron-ethyl showed consistently high activities against Echinochloa crus-galli and E. kuroguwai regardless of soil flooding condition, while penoxsulam and bentazone + cyhalofop showed significantly lower activity in 5 cm flooding condition than 0 cm flooding condition. Flucetosulfuron + pyrazosulfuron-ethyl did not control sulfonylurea resistant Monochoria vaginalis and Scirpus juncoides, while its tank-mix with bentazone or 2,4-D at 2/3 or 1/2-folds of their recommended rates, respectively, provided > 90% control.

  • The herbicide butachlor [N-(butoxymethyl)-2-chloro-N-(2,6-di-methylphenyl) acetamide] is widely used by farmers as a tool for weed management of transplanted rice(Oryza sativa L.) in Taiwan. The herbicide did not stop germination of rice and weed seeds, but strongly inhibited the subsequent growth of young shoots and roots. The inhibition was also strong on established seedlings. However, they could recover to normal growth after the herbicide effect disappeared. Butachlor greatly decreased the endogenous indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) but increased the endogenous abscisic acid (ABA) contents of rice seedlings. Addition of lAA into growth medium (Hoagland's solution) partly relieved growth inhibition. Pretreatment of both gibberellic acid ($GA_3$) and IAA 24 hours before butachlor treatment almost completely alleviated the butachlor-interfere with GA and/or IAA metabolism or their action resulting in the growth inhibition of rice. Butachlor was readily absorbed by rice roots. During 24 hours of uptake experiment, 32% of the applied herbicide was absorbed. Pretreatment of the herbicide for 2 days did ncx affect the absorption. Of the absorbed herbicide, 80% remained in roots, only 20% transported into shoots, and more than 50% was metabolized to water soluble substances. Thin-layer chromatographic (TLC) analysis indicated that the Rf value of the most abundant metabolite was butachlor-glutathione conjugate. Rice, barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv.), and monochoria (Monochoria vaginalis Presl) seedlings contained relatively high level of non-protein thiols, while the glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity was found highest in rice, barnyardgrass the next, monochoria the lowest. The difference in GST activity among these species might be related to their sensitivity to butachlor.

  • Four methods of vegetation analysis were compared to determine the most suitable method to use in transplanted rice. The highest number of weed species, 14 was obtained with the list quadrat method while the least number, 8 was obtained with the line intercept method. The clip quadrat method tended to overestimate weed species with a low moisture content such as Sagittaria trifolia L. and Ludwigia prostrata Roxb while for the list quadrat method, weed species with a high moisture content such as Sagittaria pygmaea Miq. and Monochoria vaginalis (Burm. f) Pres 1 were overestimated. With the line intercept method, weed species having conspicuous leaf blades such as S. trifolia and Potamogeton distinctus Benn. were dominant. Of the methods tested, the line intercept method was the least desirable because it accounted for the least number of weed species. Any of the others could be use for vegetation analysis without any significant problems arising. However, preference was given to the point quadrat method because of the ease of measurement. It was also less tedious and less time consuming than the other methods.

  • Post emergence herbicidal activities$(pI_{50})$ of X-substituted phenylvinylsulfone derivatives(S) in-vivo against rice(Oryza sativa L.), Barnyard grass(Echinochloa crus-galli) and Pickerelweed(Monochoria vaginalis Presl) were measured by the pot test under paddy conditions. The (S) showed herbicidal symptom rapidly with lower activity(average $pI_{50}=2.0$) as proherbicide, which was excellent tolerance to rice. The structure activity relationships(SAR) were analyzed using such a physicochemical parameters as hydrophobic$({\pi})$ and molecular orbital(MO) quantity by the multiple regression technique, and discussed with quantum pharmacology. The herbicidal activities were related to the hydrophobic$({\pi})$ effect of X-substituent and orbital(HOMO & LUMO) energy. In case of Pickerelweed, the effect was rationalized by parabolic function of ${\pi}$ constant, where the optimal value of ${\pi}$ was 1.10. An increase in hydrophobicity and negative orbital energy by the electron attracting X-substituent may contribute to the herbicidal activity. Based on results proposed from SAR analysis, the mode of herbicidal action could be assumed.

  • The phytosociological study was carried out to investigate the structural characteristics of fallow paddy vegetation in Korea. The vegetation data of total 22 relev$\'{e}$s were analyzed by the Zurich-Montpellier school's method. Six syntaxa (1 subassociations and 5 communities) of fallow paddy were recognized: Polygonetosum thunbergii typicum subass. nov. hoc., Aneilema keisak community, Juncus effusus var. decipiens community, Phragmites commuis community, Monochoria vaginalis var. plantaginea community, Typha orientalis community of Polygonetum thunbergii Lohm. et Miyawaki 1962. Detrended correspondence analysis showed that Aneilema keisak community and Monochoria vaginalis var. plantaginea community were negatively correlated with soil total nitrogen. Polygonetosum thunbergii typicum subass. nov. hoc. and Phragmites commuis community was distributed in the soil with low pH.

  • A new paddy field herbicide, metazosulfuron granule is an herbicide for controlling annual and perennial weeds occurring in machinery transplanting paddy field. It is recommended to apply $30kg\;ha^{-1}$ 15 days after transplanting. As a result of preliminary tests, it could control seven annual species such as Echinochloa crus-galli, Bidens tripartita, Ludwigia prostrata, Monochoria vaginalis var. plantaginea, etc. and four perennial species including Cyperus serotinus, Sagittaria trifolia, Eleocharis kuroguwai, and Scirpus juncoides. Monochoria vaginalis var. plantaginea, S. trifolia and S. juncoides resistant to sulfonylurea- herbicides were also controlled. Because application timing of the herbicide is wide, it is very efficient to control the spraying timing by users. Phytotoxicity of rice cultivars was not observed, and the impact on the environment is very limited.
