  • The present experimental and numerical study investigate flow and natural convection heat transfer characteristics of a composed rectangular-parallelogrammic enclosure with a guide vane. The governing equations for the two-dimensional, laminar, natural convection process in an enclosure are discretized by the control volume approach which insures the conservative characteristics to be satisfied in the calculation domain, and solved by a modified SIMPLE algorithm. The momentum and energy equations are coupled through the buoyancy term. In this results of experimental study, the natural convection heat transfer characteristics was well coincided with conclusions of other earlier experimental researches and numerical analysis.

  • In this paper molecular dynamics simulations have been carried out to investigate energy and momentum transfer of hydrogen ions impacted on the Ni (100) surface with $45^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ incident angles. The initial kinetic energies of the hydrogen ion were ranged from 100 eV to 1,600 eV to study the layer-by-layer energy variation as a dependence of incident energies and angles. At low incident energies, the scattering energy transfer is dominated by the normal motion of surface layers due to thermal vibrations and multiple collision effects. For higher incident energies, the scattering energy transfer in a normal direction is greater than that in a parallel direction. In the case of penetration, the amount of transferred energies do not affect much on Ni layers at low incident energy. It was found channeling effects through Ni layers with increasing incident energies.

  • Experimental and computational studies were carried out to investigate the turbulent heat transfer enhancement of the cooling system in nuclear reactor by large scale vortex generation. The large scale vortex motion was generated by rearranging the inclination angels of mixing vanes to the coordinate direction. Axial development of mean and turbulent velocities in the subchannels were measured by the 2-color LDV system. Eddy diffusivity concept based on $\kappa{-}\varepsilon$ model was employed to calculate the turbulent heat and momentum transfers in the subchannel. The turbulences generated by split mixing vanes has small length scales so that they maintain only about $10D_H$ after the spacer grid. On the other hand, the turbulences generated by the large scale vortex motions continue longer and remain up to $25D_H$ after the spacer grid.

  • Absorption of water vapor into LiBr-$H_2O$ O solution flowing over a finned inclined surface is numerically investigated. The momentum, energy, and diffusion equation are numerically solved using a finite difference method. The four different shapes of the wall surfaces are considered to find the best surface for absorption assuming that the wall temperature and the surface tension are constant. The effects of the fin interval and Reynolds number are investigated. Based on the numerical results, it is known that the parabolic surface shows better absorption performance than the other surfaces, and that water vapor absorption increases gradually with decreasing the fin interval.

  • This paper presents a new generating unit maintenance scheduling algorithm considering regional reserve margin and transfer capability. Existing researches focused on reliability of the overall power systems have some problems that adequate reliability criteria cannot be guaranteed in supply shortage regions. Therefore specific constraints which can treat regional reserve ratio have to be added to conventional approaches. The objective function considered in this paper is the variance (second-order momentum) of operating reserve margin to levelize reliability during a planning horizon. This paper focuses on significances of considering regional reliability criteria and an advanced hybrid optimization method based on PSO algorithm. The proposed method has been applied to IEEE reliability test system(1996) with 32-generators and a real-world large scale power system with 291 generators. The results are compared with those of the classical central maintenance scheduling approaches and conventional PSO algorithm to verify the effectiveness of the algorithm proposed in this paper.

  • Numerical analysis of the heat transfer associated with droplet impact on a hot solid surface is performed by solving the mass, momentum and energy equations for the liquid-gas region. The deformed droplet shape is tracked by a level set method which is modified to achieve volume conservation during the whole calculation procedure and to include the effect of contact angle at the wall. The numerical method is validated through test calculations for the cases reported in the literature. Based on the numerical results, the effects of advancing/receding contact angle, impact velocity and droplet size on the heat transfer during droplet impact are quantified.

  • This paper is concerned with the prediction of two dimensional turbulent flows in the parallel plate with the repeated cylindrical blockages. The purpose of this paper is to find the effect of the eccentricity and the pitch of the repeated cylindrical blockages on the flow field, heat transfer coefficients and friction factors. A special technique is developed for the solution of the fully developed turbulent recirculating flow, in which the flow field varies periodically. A non-othogonal coordinate transformation is employed to solve the momentum and the energy equations. The results show that the pitch ratio or the eccentricity of the repeated blockages become smaller, or the Reynolds number of the flow larger, friction factors and heat transfer coefficients increase.

  • Membrane distillation (MD) is one of the water treatment processes which involves the momentum, heat and mass transfer through channels and membrane. In this study, CFD modeling has been used to simulate the heat and mass transfer in the direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD). Also, the effect of operating parameters on the water flux is investigated. The result shows a good agreement with the experimental result. Results indicated that, while feed temperature is increasing in the feed side, water flux improves in the permeate side. Since higher velocity leads to the higher mixing and turbulence in the feed channel, water flux rises due to this increase in the feed velocity. Moreover, results revealed that temperature polarization coefficient is rising as flow rate (velocity) increases and it is decreasing while the feed temperature increases. Lastly, the thermal efficiency of direct contact membrane distillation is defined, and results confirm that thermal efficiency improves while feed temperature increases. Also, flow rate increment results in enhancement of thermal efficiency.

  • The aim of this study was to analyze the momentum and heat transfer of a rotating nanofluid with conducting spherical dust particles. The fluid flows over a stretching surface under the influence of an external magnetic field. By applying similarity transformations, the governing partial differential equations were trans-formed into nonlinear coupled ordinary differential equations. These equations were solved with the built-in function bvp4c in MATLAB. Moreover, the effects of the rotation parameter ω, magnetic field parameter M, mass concentration of the dust particles α, and volume fraction of the nano particles 𝜙, on the velocity and temperature profiles of the fluid and dust particles were considered. The results agree well with those in published papers. According to the result the hikes in the rotation parameter ω decrease the local Nusselt number, and the increasing volume fraction of the nano particles 𝜙 increases the local Nusselt number. Moreover the friction factor along the x and y axes increases with increasing volume fraction of the nano particles 𝜙.

  • The gas jet from a coaxial porous injector for two-phase flows is discharged from the porous surface, which encloses the center liquid jet, and the gas and liquid jet interact with each other physically. The wall injected gas jet transfers the radial momentum effectively while the radial gas jet develops to axial jet, and the performance of atomizing and mixing can be improved. In this study, the Weber number and the ratio of momentum flux were controlled by changing the gas injection area and the mass flow rate of the gas jet, and a study on the spray characteristics at the cold-flow test using water and air simulant was performed. It is concluded that the radial momentum transfer concept of a coaxial porous injector gives a positive effect on the atomization and mixing of the two-phase spray.
