  • The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the variation of the molecular size distribution by granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption. GAC adsorption was assessed by using the rapid small-scale column test (RSSCT) and high-performance size-exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) was used to analyze the molecular size distribution (MSD) in the effluent of GAC column. RSSCT study suggested that GAC adsorption exhibited excellent interrelationship between dissolved organic carbon (DOC) breakthrough and MSD as function of bed volumes passed. After GAC treatment, the nonadsorbable fraction which was about 25percents of influent DOC corresponded to the hydrophilic (HPI) natural organic carbon (NOM) of NOM fractions and was composed entirely of <300 molecular weight (MW) in the HPSEC at the initial stage of the RSSCT operation. The dominant MW fraction in the source water was 1,000~5,000daltons. At the bed volumes 2,500, MW <500 of GAC treated water was risen rather than it of source water. After the bed volumes 7,300 of operation, the MW 1,000~3,000 fraction was closed to about 80percents of DOC found in the GAC influent. The Number-average molecular weight (Mn) value determined using HPSEC for the effluent of GAC column was gently increased as DOC breakthrough progress. The quotient p(Mw/Mn) can be used to estimate the degree of polydispersity was shown greatest value for the GAC effluent at the initial stage of the RSSCT operation.

  • The rheological properties of the solutions of atactic poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) were investigated in terms of molecular weight distribution (MWD) of the polymer. The dynamic viscosity (${\eta}#$) and loss modulus (G") for the PVA/DMSO solutions with broader MWD were lower than those with narrower MWD at the similar $M_w$. It could be explained by the fact that the free volume for the solution with broader MWD at the similar $M_w$ was increased. The storage modulus(G#) of 14 wt% PVA/DMSO solutions with broader MWD was higher than that with narrower MWD at a lower frequency than 1.3 rad/sec, but lower than that with narrower MWD at a higher frequency (>1.3 rad/sec). The slopes of modified Cole-Cole plots of the 14 wt% solutions showed that as the MWD was broadened, the phase transition with frequency was more noticeable.

  • The formation of soluble microbial products(SMP) and molecular weight distribution on loading rate were observed in batch-type culture medium, which phenol was fed as a substrate. The molecular weight destribution was obtained by using 30K, 100K dalton and $0.45{\mu}$ membrane filters. When the phenol concentrationas a substrate was 120, 230 and 440 mg/L , the specific substrate utilization rate(q) showed 0.639, 1.281 and 1.744 mgTOC/mgMLSS/day, respectively. The endogenous biomass decay rate constant($K_d$) at each substrate concentration was 0.00536, 0.0661 and 0.0749($day^1$), respectively. The $SMP_e$ product rate constant($k_{SMP}_ e$) showed 0.006, 0.0058 and 0.0057($day^1$), respectively. The initial influent substrate during the course of time degraded and produced $SMP_s$. The $SMP_s$ was converted to the $SMP_{nd}$ and endogenous phase converted to the $SMP_e$ ingredients. The molecula weight distribution on loading rate was converted to a higher MW during the course of time.

  • NPT Monte Carlo simulations were performed to calculate the molecular properties of syndiotactic poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and syndiotactic poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) melts using the configurational bias Monte Carlo move, concerted rotation, reptation, and volume fluctuation. The density, mean square backbone end-to-end distance, mean square radius of gyration, fractional free-volume distribution, distribution of torsional angles, small molecule solubility constant, and radial distribution function of PVC at 0.1 MPa and above the glass transition temperature were calculated/measured, and those of PVA were calculated. The calculated results were compared with the corresponding experimental data and discussed. The calculated densities of PVC and PVA were smaller than the experimental values, probably due to the very low molecular weight of the model polymer used in the simulation. The fractional free-volume distribution and radial distribution function for PVC and PVA were nearly independent of temperature.

  • In copolymerization of methyl acrylate (MA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) with various ratios of MA to MMA and $[CuCl]/[PMDETA]/[PVAc-CCl_{3}]$ catalyst system in bulk at $80^{\circ}C$ via ATRP, several terpolymer with different copolymer composition, were synthesized. The atom transfer radical copolymerization of MA and MMA with macroinitiator, is very sensitive to molecular weight and its distribution. In this work it was possible to calculate the molecular weight of the terpolymers and show that it is close to the experimentally determined number average molecular weight from GPC.

  • N-Vinylcarbazole (VCZ) was solution-polymerized in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at 25, 35, and $45^{\circ}C$ using a room temperature initiator, 2,2'-azobis(2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile) (ADMVN); the effects of amount of solvent, polymerization temperature, and initiator concentration were investigated. On the whole, the experimental results corresponded to predicted ones. Room polymerization temperature using ADMVN proved to be successful in obtaining poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVCZ) of high molecular weight with small temperature rise during polymerization, nevertheless of free radical polymerization by azoinitiator. The polymerization rate of VCZ in THF was proportional to the 0.47 power of ADMVN concentration. The molecular weight was higher and the molecular weight distribution was narrower with PVCZ polymerized at lower temperatures. For PVCZ prepared in THF at $25^{\circ}C$ using ADMVN concentration of 0.00005 mol/mol of VCZ, weight-average molecular weight of 221,000 was obtained, with polydispersity index of 2.05, and degree of lightness converged to about 99%.

  • The synthesis of materials with controlled composition and architectures continues to be a focus of considerable current research. Dendritic multiarm polymers such as dendrimer, hyperbranched polymer, and star polymers are three dimensional macromolecules, in which a large number of linear arms of similar molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution emanate from a central core. • The internal standard method, which is widely used in chromatographic techniques, is applied to the size exclusion chromatography for the on-line determination of dn/dc value of the sample. This method is found to provide the dn/dc value with suitable accuracy in determining the absolute molecular weight and the molecular weight distribution of the polymers when a light scattering detector is used.

  • We synthesized ethylene-styrene copolymer using pyrazolato-type metallocene catalysts. We observed the effects of ethylene contents on the catalytic activity, yield molecular weight and molecular weight distribution. We could also confirm living polymerization behavior through the changes of the Mn and Mw/Mn according to the yield.

  • To obtain low molecular weight water soluble chitosan (LMWSC) with various molecular weights, chitosan oligosaccharides (COS) with lactic acid was separated by using ultrafilteration technique and LMWSC with a free amine group was prepared by the novel salts-removal method. The characterization of LMWSC removed the lactic acid and degree of deacetylation (DDA) were identified by FT-IR and $^1H-NMR$ spectra. Polydispersity index (PDI) was $1.278{\sim}1.499$, which indicates a relatively molecular weight distribution. To identify the potential as a gene carrier, we confirmed the transfection efficiency of COS fractioned according to molecular weight successfully and the salt-removed LMWSC using 293T cell. Also, LMWSC derivatives prepared for improvement transfection efficiency were evaluated using Balb/C mice.
