The organization of phospholipid monolayers and their monolayers mixed with fatty acid containing azobenzene on the water surface was investigated by means of the displacement current measurement method. The phase transition from the gaseous phase to the gaseous-fluid phase which accompanies the polar ordering of phospholipid molecules was detected in the range of immeasurably low surface pressure. The molecular area which gives the onset of the transition was determined for phospholipid monolayers. The Maxwell displacement current(MDC) pulses were generated across mixed monolayers due to the photoisomerization of fatty acid containing azobenzene by alternating irradiation of ultraviolet and visible light, because the condensation of pure azobenzene monolayers was loosened by the introduction of phospholipids into the monolayers. The displacement currents generated during light irradiation were also investgated in connection with monolayer compression cycles. It was found that the maximum of MDC appeared at the molecular area just before the initial rise of surface pressure in compression cycles.
Molecular self-assembly has several advantages over other nanofabrication methods. Molecular building blocks ensure ultrafine pattern precision, parallel structure formation allows for mass production and a variety of three-dimensional structures are available for fabricating complex structures. Nevertheless, the molecular interaction for self-assembly generally relies on weak forces such as van der Waals force, hydrogen bonding, or hydrophobic interaction. Due to the weak interaction, the structure formation is usually slow and the degree of ordering is low in a self-assembled structure. To promote self-assembly, directed assembly methods employing prepatterned substrates or external fields have been developed and gathered a great deal of technological attention as a next generation nanofabrication process. In this presentation a variety of directed assembly methods for soft nanomaterials including block copolymers, peptides and carbon nanomaterials will be introduced. Block copolymers are representative self-assembling materials extensively utilized in nanofabrication. In contrast to colloid assembly or anodized metal oxides, various shapes of nanostructures, including lines or interconnected networks, can be generated with a precise tunability over their shape and size. Applying prepatterned substrates$^{1,2}$ or introducing thickness modulation$^3$ to block copolymer thin films allowed for the control over the orientational and positional orderings of self-assembled structures. The nanofabrication processes for metals, semiconductors$^4$, carbon nanotubes$^{5,6}$, and graphene$^{6,7}$ templating block copolymer self-assembly will be presented.
Recently the ab initio effective valence shell Hamiltonian method $H^v$ has been extended to treat spin-orbit coupling in atoms or molecules. The quasidegenerate many-body perturbation theory based $H^v$ method has an advantage of determining the spin-orbit coupling energies of all valence states for both the neutral species and its ions with a similar accuracy from a single computation of the effective spin-orbit coupling operator. The new spin-orbit $H^v$ method is applied to calculating the fine structure splittings of the valence states of SiH, $SiH^+$, and $SiH^{2+}$ not only to assess the accuracy of the method but also to investigate the spin-orbit interaction of highly excited states of SiH species. The computed spin-orbit splittings for ground states are in good agreement with experiment and the few available ab initio computations. The ordering of fine structure levels of the bound and quasi-bound spin-orbit coupled valence states of SiH and its ions, for which neither experiment nor theory is available, is predicted.
The structural changes viewed from the molecular level have been investigated for the isothermal crystallization phenomena of polyethylene (PE) and the solvent-induced crystallization phenomenon of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) glassy sample. The data, which were collected by the time-resolved measurements of Fourier-transform infrared spectra, Raman spectra, synchrotron-sourced small-angle X-ray scattering, wide-angle X-ray scattering, and so on, were combined together to extract the detailed structural information in these phase transition phenomena. In the case of PE, the isothermal crystallization from the melt to the orthorhombic form was found to occur via the conformationally-disordered trans chain form, followed by the formation of the lamellar stacking structure of regular orthorhombic-type crystals. In the case of sPS, the amorphous chains in the glassy sample were found to enhance the mobility through the interaction with the injected solvent molecules, which act as a trigger to cause the conformational ordering from the random coil to the regular T$_2$G$_2$-type helical form. The thus created short helical segments were found to grow into longer helices, which gathered together to form the crystallites, as revealed by the organized coupling of the infrared, Raman and X-ray scattering data.

We present the structural, magnetic, and electrical properties in the (Al,Mn)N films with various Mn concentrations grown by plasma-enhanced molecular beam epitaxy. X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that the (Al,Mn)N films have the wurtzite structure without secondary phases. All (Al,Mn)N films showed the ferromagnetic ordering. Particularly, ($Al_{1-x}Mn_{x}$)N film with x = 0.028 exhibited the highest magnetic moment per Mn atom at room temperature. Since all the films exhibit the insulating characteristics, the origin of ferromagnetism in (Al,Mn)N might be attributed to either indirect exchange interaction caused by virtual electron excitations from Mn acceptor level to the valence band within the samples or a percolation of bound magnetic polarons arisen from exchange interaction of localized carriers with magnetic impurities in a low carrier density regime.

Organic thin-film transistors were fabricated using pentacene as an active electronic material. Device characteristics are improved with increasing the deposition rate of pentacene. It is observed that the deposition rate influences on the interface properties between pentacene and polystyrene, and the molecular ordering of pentacene film. In this paper, we report the effects of the deposition rate of pentacene film on the device performance.
Recent development of scanning probe microscope techniques has made it possible to investigate, not only microscopic surface topography, but also physical and chemical properties on the nanometer-scale. The scanning Maxwell-stress microscopy (SMM) is surface characterization tool capable of mapping both the surface topography and electrical properties, such as surface potential, surface charge dielectric constant of thin films with a nanometer-scale resolution by means of the AC voltage driven oscillation of metal coated cantilever. In this study, we observed the surface potential distribution and molecular ordering in thin films. We have demonstrated that the SMM can be used for imaging surface potential distribution over the film surface and also be used for detecting surface changes in thin films. This is first step towards the understanding of electrical phenomena in organic and inorganic materials, biological system with SMM.
