Objectives: This study aimed to determine the effects of 1-rooted mandibular second molar (MnSM) teeth on root canal anatomy complexities of the mandibular central incisor (MnCI), mandibular lateral incisor (MnLI), mandibular canine (MnCn), mandibular first premolar (MnFP), mandibular second premolar (MnSP), and mandibular first molar (MnFM) teeth. Materials and Methods: Cone-beam computed tomography images of 600 patients with full lower dentition were examined. Individuals with 1-rooted MnSMs were determined, and the complexity of root canal anatomy of other teeth was compared with individuals without 1-rooted MnSMs (Group-1; subjects with at least one 1-rooted MnSM, Group-2; subjects with more than a single root in both MnSMs). A second canal in MnCIs, MnLIs, MnCns, MnFPs, and MnSPs indicated a complicated root canal. The presence of a third root in MnFMs was recorded as complicated. Results: The prevalence of 1-rooted MnSMs was 12.2%, with the C-shaped root type being the most prevalent (9%). There were fewer complicated root canals in MnCIs (p = 0.02), MnLIs (p < 0.001), and MnFPs (p < 0.001) in Group 1. The other teeth showed no difference between the groups (p > 0.05). According to logistic regression analysis, 1-rooted right MnSMs had a negative effect on having complex canal systems of MnLIs and MnFPs. Left MnSMs were explanatory variables on left MnLIs and both MnFPs. Conclusions: In individuals with single-rooted MnSMs, a less complicated root canal system was observed in all teeth except the MnFMs.
Molar extrusion is a quite common problem in prosthodontic patients. It is caused due to the loss or infraocclusion of opposing teeth. A more conservative approach than reduction of the coronal part of extruded tooth is to intrude the malaligned molar orthodontically. Several authors have presented the cases of molar intrusion, by cither removable or fixed appliances. However, the design of those appliances was complex so that many teeth were included as an anchorage unit. This increased the patient's discomfort inevitably. Moreover, the results could be unpredictable. Instead of these conventional methods, skeletal anchorage has been suggested for ideal force system to intrude a molar without any side effects. Many recent clinical reports presented the cases using microscrew or miniplate as a direct anchorage, which included some limitation. The purpose of this report is to introduce the indirect skeletal anchorage for intrusion of extruded maxillary molar.

Introduction: Third molar extraction is one of the most common procedures in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The impacted third molar causes many pathological conditions, such as pericoronitis, caries, periodontitis, resorption of adjacent teeth, and cyst or tumors associated with impacted teeth. Extraction is often considered the treatment of choice for impacted lower third molars. On the other hand, imprudent extraction of deeply impacted third molars can cause permanent complications, such as inferior alveolar nerve damage. Therefore, guidelines for the extraction of lower third molars should be set to prevent embarrassing complications. This study examined the indication and current trends of the extracted lower third molars in the dental hospital of a dental college. Materials and Methods: 557 extracted third molars were evaluated at the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery of Yonsei University. The chief complaint, diagnosis, age and degree of impaction were analyzed to determine the tendency for the extraction of asymptomatic lower third molars. Results: The percentage of asymptomatic third molars was 40.8%. In cases of full impacted tooth or full erupted tooth, the percentage of asymptomatic teeth was more than 50% (52.4% and 54.3, respectively). Among those partially impacted teeth, 73.1% of them showed symptoms, such as pain, tenderness and swelling. In terms of age, pericoronitis was evident at a younger age, and dental caries/periodontitis was the main cause of removal in those aged over 50. Twenty nine cases (1.6%) had teeth associated with pathological changes Conclusion: The incidence of pathological changes to the lower third molar was relatively low. Surgical extraction is recommended in cases of partially impacted teeth. In Korea, the incidence of asymptomatic third molar extraction was relatively higher than in European countries. More careful attention would be desirable to consider the risks and benefits of lower third molar extraction.

It is very important to arrange the artificial teeth correctly in bucco-lingual (labio- lingual) relation in reconstrcting dentition. Although many anatomic landmarks and techniques have been reported over the years, they are based on westerns. So this study was performd to examine the horizontal relations of mandibular teeth in Korean dentulous adults. 200 volunteers(mean age 22.9) who had natural dentition were selected. The impressions were taken with irreversible hydrocolloid impression material and mandibular study models were fabricated using class I dental stone. Then they were measured with 3-dimensional measuring device specially designed for this study. The results were as follows ; It is better to consider the lingual cusps of the lower posterior teeth as a guide than the linguoaxial surfaces of the lower posterior teeth, arranging the lower posterior teeth buccally to the line which starts from the mesial aspect of the lower canine and continue backward to the lingual aspect of the retromolar pad. It is better to arrange the fossae of the lower posterior teeth buccally to the line which starts from the cusp tip of the lower canine and continue backward to the top of the retromolar pad. The positions of the lower posterior teeth in the denture-bearing area ; considering the fossa as a guide, the 2nd premolar was positioned in center. considering the buccal cusp as a guide, the 1st molar and the 2nd molar were positioned in center. the distance ratio(d/a) was incresed constantly from the lower canine to the 2nd molar d ; the distance between the buccal vestibule(the lowest point) and the buccal cusp tips of the lower posterior teeth. a ; the distance between the buccal vestibule(the lowest point) and the lingual vestibule(the lowest point). The lower canine was positioned lingually($0.11{\pm}0.13$) than the labial vestibule, and the central incisor and the lateral incisor were positioned almost in the imaginary perpendicular plane of the labial vestibule(the lowest point).
In order to evaluate the normal eruption time of the Korean permanennt teeth, the author had examined the eruption phases of permanent first molars in 778 males and 653 female children aged from 5 to 9-year old and analysed. The eruption was divided into 4 phases; the tip of the crown can be seen, the dull occlusal surface of the crown can be easily seen, the crown is not in contact with its antagonist, and the crown is in contact with its antagonist. The obtained results were as follows : 1. It seemed that percentage of the eruptingand erupted permanent first molar in female by age was higher than that of male. 2. In general, percentage of the erupting and erupted permanent first molar by age was higher than that of upper first molar. 3. In the correlation of age with the eruption phase, the regression equation were "y=0.43x+5.61" on male upper first molar, "y=0.41x+5.60" on male lower first molar, "y=0.44x+5.47" on female upper first molar, and "y=0.38x+5.57" on female lower first molar respectively.n female lower first molar respectively.
Fifty subjects who were to be treated with fixed orhodontic appliances by light wire edgewise technique were selected. Bands with different marginal depth were made in first molar and direct bonding brackets were bonded in second premolar. For determining the effects of fixed orthodontic appliance on the gingival tissue, the changes of clinical crown length, periodontal pocket depth, gingival sulcus fluid were checked. The results were as follows: 1. Gingival condition was deteriorated after wearing the fixed orthodontic appliance, and the deteriorative rate was decreased gradually. 2. The greatest gingival change was occurred in the maxillary first molar among the experimental teeth. 3. The gingival change of maxillary teeth was greater than that of mandibular teeth. $(p\leq0.01)$ 4. The greater gingival change was occurred around subgingivally located band than around supragingivally located band. 5. Comparing the gingival changes of banded teeth with them of bonded teeth, the gingival tissue was more effected by oral hygiene than by type of appliances. 6. In the quantitive changes of gingival crevicular fluid, there was no exact relationship with gingival inflammation.
Purpose: The dental age estimation of children is performed using dental maturity. Postmortem missing of the anterior teeth or the distortion of image of the anterior teeth in panoramic radiographs can make it difficult to analyze the development of the anterior teeth. This pilot study was conducted to derive a new age estimation method based only on the developmental stage of mandibular posterior teeth. Methods: This study was conducted using panoramic radiographs of 650 subjects aged 3 to 15 years old. The dental developmental stages of the lower left first premolar, second premolar, first molar and second molar were evaluated according to the Demirjian's criteria. The intra-/inter-observer reliability was evaluated, and multiple linear regression analyses were performed including the developmental stage of each tooth as an independent variable. Results: The intra-/inter-observer reliability was 0.9626 and 0.8877, respectively, and showed very high reproducibility. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed for males and females, and the age calculation table was derived by obtaining the intercept and the coefficient according to the development stage of each tooth. The coefficient of determination (r2) of the age calculation method was 0.9634 for male and 0.9570 for female subjects, and the mean difference between chronological age and estimated dental age was -0.42 and -0.21, respectively. Conclusions: This pilot study evaluated the developmental stages of four lower posterior teeth in the Korean group according to Demirjian's criteria, and derived age estimation method. The accuracy was lower than when more teeth were used, but it will be useful to estimate age of children when the anterior teeth are difficult to accurately analyze.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the interdental distances of anterior, premolar, and molar teeth at the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) and 2 mm below the CEJ in healthy natural dentition with cone-beam computerized tomography (cone-beam CT) in order to provide valuable data for ideal implant positioning relative to mesiodistal bone dimensions. Materials and Methods: Two hundred patients who visited Dental Hospital, Wonkwang University, who had natural dentition with healthy interdental papillae, and who underwent cone-beam CT were selected. The cone-beam CT images were converted to digital imaging and communication in medicine (DICOM) files and reconstructed in three-dimensional images. To standardize the cone-beam CT images, head reorientation was performed. All of the measurements were determined on the reconstructed panoramic images by three professionally trained dentists. Results: At the CEJ, the mean maxillary interdental distances were 1.84 mm (anterior teeth), 2.07 mm (premolar), and 2.08 mm (molar), and the mean mandibular interproximal distances were 1.55 mm (anterior teeth), 2.20 mm (premolar), and 2.36 mm (molar). At 2mm below the CEJ, the mean maxillary interdental distances were 2.19 mm (anterior teeth), 2.51 mm (premolar), and 2.60 mm (molar), and the mean mandibular interproximal distances were 1.86 mm (anterior teeth), 2.53 mm (premolar), and 3.01 mm (molar). Conclusion: The interdental distances in the natural dentition were larger at the posterior teeth than at the anterior teeth and also at 2 mm below the CEJ level compared with at the CEJ level. The distances between mandibular incisors were the narrowest and the distances between mandibular molars were the widest in the entire dentition.
At present, many orthodontists regard the root parallelism of the posterior teeth important not only in diagnosis and treatment planning but also for predicting posttreatment stability. To evaluate it, they usually refer to the orthopantomogram. At this study, 97 samples were collected from students of Yonsei University, who have well-proportioned face, Angle's class I canine & molar relationships and no crown axis deviation of the posterior teeth including canines. Reliability of the root parallelism observed from orthopantomogram was evaluated by comparison with $45^{\circ}$ oblique cephalogram. The results were as follows : 1. In comparing the differences between anglular measurements in $45^{\circ}$ oblique cephalogram & orthopantomogram with $5^{\circ}$, those to mandibular plane were significantly less than to occlusal plane in number of items which showed less differences than $5^{\circ}$. 2. Compared the root parallelisms in the orthopantomogram with those in $45^{\circ}$ oblique cephalogram with $1\%$ significance level, parallelism between upper canine & 1st premolar, lower canine & 1st premolar, lower 1st premolar & 2nd premolar, and lower right 2nd molar & 3rd molar showed statistically significant differences. 3. When the significance between the differences of the root parallelism between above two kinds of film and $5^{\circ}$ was verified by two sided paired t-test, more or less large difference was shown between lower right 2nd molar & 3rd molar, a little larger than $5^{\circ}$ between lower canine & 1st premolar, smaller at the rest of them. 4. In $45^{\circ}$ oblique cephalogram, lower canine & 1st premolar showed convergent root arrangements each other, while in orthopantomogram they were divergent each other. All the others except them showed convergency on the upper, divergency on the lower in both films.
