Effect of cement dust on soil physico-chemical properties around cement plants in Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya

  • Investigation was carried out to assess the effect of cement dust deposition on the physico-chemical properties of soil near some cement plants in Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya. Soil samples were collected and analysed and compared with the control site. Comparison of various soil physico-chemical parameters revealed that cement dust emanating from cement plants has changed the soil quality in the surrounding areas of cement plants. The normal soil pH in the area is generally acidic. However, due to the continuous deposition of cement dust soil pH was found slightly alkaline near the cement plants. The higher values of soil parameters such as electrical conductivity and bulk density were also noticed near the cement plants. However, lower values of water holding capacity, soil moisture content, soil organic carbon and total nitrogen content were found compared to the control sites. The effect of cement dust deposition on soil is more in areas nearer to the cement plants. At present the changes may not be so serious but if this trend continues, soil properties of a vast area around the cement plants are likely to change leading to multiple effects on flora, fauna and socio-economy of the area.

산채류의 식이섬유 함량과 물리적 특성 (Dietary Fiber Contents and Physical Properties of Wild Vegetables)

  • 9종의 산채류를 분석한 결과 건물량으로 33~55%의 식이섬유를 함유하였다. 그 중 달래는 22%의 수용성 식이섬유와 49%의 총 식이섬유를 함유하였고 더덕은 21%의 수용성 식이섬유와 55%의 총 식이섬유를 함유하였다. 야생더덕은 재배더덕에 비하여 8% 더 많은 식이섬유를 함유하였다. 산채류의 수분 흡착력은 밀기울이나 콩식이섬유보다 높았으나 oil 흡착력은 낮았다. 산채류를 분쇄하여 여과 처리한 결과 더덕의 경우 총 식이섬유 함량이 55%에서 83%로, 달래의 경우 49%에서 69%로 증가하였다.

Gum류를 첨가한 우육 Patty의 품질 특성 (Quality Characteristics of Beef Patty Containing Gums)

  • In order to investigate the possibility of low fat meat products, beef patties were prepared with gumssuch as carrageenan, methyl cellulose, and xanthan gum. The quality characteristics of beef patties were examined. Moisture contents of raw and cooked patties of control were lower than those of patties containing gums. and fat content was higher than those of containing gums. There was no significant difference in the protein contents of patties. In case of L-value(lightness) of raw patty, the control was higher than those patties containing gums. a- ( redness) and b-value(yellowness) among patties were not significantly different. Cooking yield, fat retention, and water holding capacity of beef patties containing gums were higher than control beef patty, but salt soluble protein and gel strength were not significantly different. Significant difference did not exist among beef patties in hardness, but the chewiness and gumminess of patties containing gums were higher than control. In case of sensory evaluation, there was no significant difference among patties in aroma and palatability. Texture of control was higher than patties containing gums, and juiciness of control was higher than patties containing carrageenan.

홍삼분말 첨가량에 따른 국수의 품질특성 (Quality Characteristics of Noodles with Red Ginseng Powder Added)

  • This study was performed to find out the quality characteristics of Noodles by addition of red ginseng powder(0, 2, 4, 6, 8%). The quality characteristics of the sample were estimated in terms of general com-position, color difference, cookery characteristics(water absorption, volume of cooked noodles, turbidity), texture profile analysis and sensory evaluation. The protein, lipid, ash, Na and water binding capacity did not show significant difference in any of the groups. In red ginseng powder added groups, moisture contents, a and b values significantly increased but L value considerably decreased(p<0.05). The weight, volume, water absorption of the cooked noodles and turbidity of 8% of red ginseng powder added group were significantly higher than the control group(p<0.05). In texture profile analysis, adhesiveness, gumminess, hardness and springiness significantly decreased(p<0.05) with more red ginseng powder added. Chewiness and cohesiveness significantly(p<0.05) increased with the 4, 6, 8% of red ginseng powder added. In sensory evaluation, surface color was very good in the 8% red ginseng powder added group while taste and flavor of red ginseng were very good except the 8% red ginseng powder added group(p<0.05). Appearance and overall quality were highest in the 4% red ginseng powder added group(p<0.05). Therefore, noodles containing 4% red ginseng powder were most preferable.

  • 본 연구의 목표는 1 ton/day용량의 연속 감압식 간접열 방식의 벨트형 건조장치를 개발하여 건조효율을 70% 이상 향상시키며 기존 건조기 장치에 비하여 약 50% 이상의 건조기 크기를 축소시켜 장치의 소형, 경량화를 이루고 그로 인한 설치비 및 운전비 절감효과를 20%이상 향상시키는 것이다. 현재는 기존의 간접열 건조장치를 분석하여 구조적인 개선점을 도출하였으며 기초실험을 통하여 우수한 건조성능을 확인하였다. 또한 감압조건에서의 실험을 수행하여 열전달 및 건조특성이 향상되는 것을 확인하였다.

Effect of Different Carrier Agents on Physicochemical Properties of Spray-dried Pineapple (Ananas comosus Merr.) Powder

  • The main purpose of this study is to examine the different physicochemical properties of spray-dried products. The carrier agents and powders after the spray-drying process were analyzed for encapsulation yield, moisture content, color parameters, total polyphenol content (TPC), antioxidant capacity (AC), bulk density, flowability, wettability, hygroscopicity, water solubility index (WSI), particle size and microstructure. The spray-drying process was carried out with different carrier agents including maltodextrin (MD) and the combination of maltodextrin and gum arabic (MD-GA) with MA/GA ratio of 70/30, dried at the inlet/outlet air temperature of 160 ℃/70 ℃, 4 bar, airflow rate of 70 ㎥·h-1 and feed flow rate of 750 mL·h-1. The results showed that the different carrier agents have significant influences on the physicochemical properties of the powder produced by the spray-drying method. In there, while the values of recovery efficiency and flowability of spray-dried products from MD are higher than those of spray-dried products from MD-GA combination, the opposite is true for the values of TPC, AC, bulk density and wettability, whereas hygroscopicity and WSI values are equally represented in both products.

Austria Koppler Moor에 서식하는 끈끈이주걱(Drosera rotundifolia)의 군란형성과 적응환경 (Community Composition and Adapted Environment of Sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) in Koppler Moor, Austria)

  • At Koppl area, undamaged natural habitat of sundew, I have analysed interspecific affinities and community composition through mathematical method and important environmental factors. Interspecific affinities of the species with frequency of more than 5% in vegetation table were analysed through chi-square test and showed obvious group of Drosera rotundifolia, Vaccinium uliginosum, Calluna vulgaris, Eriophorum angustifolium and 21 species. The result of ordination anlysis using DECORANA of VESPAN II showed eigenvalue of 0.6047 for axis I, 0.2024 for axis II and 0.0763 for axis Ⅲ. And it divided into 4 groups of quadrat number 1-5 for Sphagnum squarrosum-community, 6-10 for Crepis paludosa-community. 11-25 for Carex panicea-community and 26-35 for Scorpidium scorpioides-community. By the classification using TWINSPAN, the 7 areas divided into 2 groups of 1-10 and 11-35 at first level of division with high eigenvalue of 0.588 and indicator was Sphagnum squarrosum. At second level of division it divided into 4 groups as the results of DECORANA with eigenvalues of 0.268 and 0.423 and indicators were Pinguicula vulgaris and Scorpidium scorpioides. Microclimatic environment of studied area was low in temperature and high in humidity and soil environment showed high in field moisture capacity, acid, high organic matter content, low NO3 and K2O content, compare to normal soil, and high ground water level.

도시 공원의 토양에서 중금속이 미생물의 생체량과 활성에 미치는 영향 (The effects of heavy metals on microbial biomass and activity in contaminated urban park soils)

  • The relationship between pb, zn, cd, and the microbial biomass and activity were investigated in three public park soils of central and outer london. Variability with distance from the roadside and profile were studied. The heavey metal concentrations were the highest in hampstead heath and hyde park with high trafic density and the lowest in hainault. The highest concentrations of heavy metals were found adjacent to the roadside in the upper parts of the soil profile. Dehydrogenase activity, adenosine tri-phosphate and ergosterol contents used as indices of micrbial biomass and activity, were generally higher in hainadult, and also higher in the upper pats of the soil profile. Simple regression analysis indicated that the microbial biomass and activity were affected significantly by moisture content, water holding capacity, total organic carbon, total nitrogen, and organic mater rather than heavy metal concentration. Highest inputs of nitrogen and carbon were associated with high inputs of heavey metals, all three being derived from vehicle emissions adjacent to the road. The hyde park and hampstead heath microbial populations were able to respond to the c and n input positively by increase in biomass and activity, whereas the hainault populations could not. This rsult suggrsts adaptation in he former to heavy matals, but not in the latter.

Anti-wrinkle Effects of Water Extracts of Teas in Hairless Mouse

  • Tea flavonoids and polyphenols are well known for their extraordinary antioxidant activity which is considered important for anti-aging processes in animals. This study evaluated the anti-wrinkle effects of three different kinds of tea (Camellia sinensis) water extracts (CSWEs) including green, white, and black teas using a photoaged hairless mouse model. Data showed that the CSWE-treatment greatly improved skin conditions of mice suffering from UVB-induced photoaging, based on the parameters including the skin erythema index, moisture capacity, and transepidermal water loss. In addition, the wrinkle measurement and image analysis of skin replicas indicated that CSWEs remarkably inhibited wrinkle formation. In histological examination, the CSWE-treated mice exhibited diminished epidermal thickness and increased collagen and elastic fiber content, key signatures for skin restoration. Furthermore, the reduced expression of MMP-3, a collagen-degradative enzyme, was observed in the skin of CSWE-treated animals. Interestingly, comparative data between green, white, and black tea indicated that the anti-wrinkle activity of white tea and black tea is equally greater than that of green tea. Taken together, these data clearly demonstrated that CSWEs could be used as an effective anti-wrinkle agent in photoaged animal skin, implying their extended uses in therapeutics.

포도과피 첨가가 분쇄돈육의 이화학적·관능적 특성에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Grape Skin on Physicochemical and Sensory Characteristics of Ground Pork Meat)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effect of grape skin on the physicochemical properties and sensory score of ground pork meat. Methods: Four types of ground pork were evaluated: T0 without grape skin, T1 with 0.3% grape skin, T2 with 0.7% grape skin, and T3 with 1.0% grape skin. Results: There was no significant group wise difference in VBN content, L-value, b-value, chemical composition of raw and cooked meat, cooking yield, water holding capacity, moisture retention, fat retention, hardness, springiness, cohesiveness, gumminess, chewiness, taste, texture, juiciness, or palatability. Total polyphenol content was highest in T3, and DPPH radical scavenging activity was highest in T2 and T3 (p<0.001). The pH was highest in T0, and was lowest in T3 (p<0.001). The a-value of T2 and T3 were significantly higher than that of T0 (p<0.05). Flavor was highest in T2 among samples (p<0.01). Conclusion: The study results suggest that grape skin may be a useful ingredient in ground pork meat in terms of antioxidant potential, color and flavor.
