The use of wood waste as substrate for plant growth exemplifies a strategy for turning waste into resources. The overall objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of wood-based growing media on plant cover in a slope area. Moreover, we tried to find out what physicochemical properties affect plant cover on a slope. For treatments, we tested natural soil, soil mixed with wood-based growing medium (1:1, w/w), and wood-based growing medium by itself. Physical and chemical characteristics were evaluated after four months from the date of treatment application to the experimental slope site. Soil coverage with seedlings of Lespedeza cyrtobotrya was measured for plant growth evaluation. Physicochemical properties were altered by mixing the natural soil with wood-based growing medium. Particularly, soil moisture and organic matter contents were significantly changed in soils treated with wood-based growing medium compared to soil alone. We confirmed that plant coverage rate was high when wood-based growing medium was mixed with the natural soil. There was a significant linear relationship between moisture content and CEC (Cation Exchange Capacity) of all growth media tested and plant coverage. This result was expected, as moisture content tends to increase with organic matter content, such as in wood-based growing medium. In conclusion, the high moisture content of the wood-based growing medium was considered effective for plant growth in the experimental slope site, and this wood-based growing medium provides a means to improve the harmony between the slope and the surrounding environment.
This study was performed to determine proper fan and heater management schemes for natural air drying of rough rice in round steel bin with stirring device under Korean weather conditions. A computer simulation model was developed to predict moisture content changes, energy requirements, and drymatter losses during drying of rough rice by natural air. Drying test was conducted to validate the simulation model using round steel bin of holding capacity of 300ton at Rice Processing Complex in Jincheon. The bin was filled with rough rice every day and mixing by stirring device. Moisture contents, ambient air temperatures, relative humidities, static pressures in plenum chamber in the bin, airflow rates, and electrical and fuel energy were measured. Relative errors of moisture content changes predicted by the simulation model were below 5ft, and relative errors of final moisture content, final grain weight, required energy ranged from 0.9% to 6%. These not levels indicated that the simulation model can satisfactorily predict the performance factors of natural air drying system such as drying rates and energr consumptions comparing error level of 10% to 15% in other drying simulation models generally used in dryer desists. Twelve different fan and heater management schemes were evaluated using the computer simulation model based on three hourly weather data from Suweon for the period of 1952-1994. The best management schemes were selected comparing the drymatter losses, required drying times, required energy consumptions. Operating fan without heating only when ambient relative humidity was below 85% or 90% appeared to be the most effective method of In operation in favorable drying weather. Under adverse drying climates or to reduce required drying time, operating fan continuously, and heating air with $1.5^{\circ}C$ temperature rise only when ambient relative humidity was over 85% appeared to be the most suitable method.
This study was, firstly, to investigate water holding capacity in terms of variation of moisture sorption isotherms of seasoned squid treated with sodium lactate, glycerol, propylene glycol, sorbitol, mannitol, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate and calcium propionate, and secondly, the effect of humectant treatments on storage stability was studied. The criteria for storage stability was based on three quality factors, namely, lipid oxiations, color development by non-enzymatic browning reactions and lipid oxidation, and mold growth. The effect of humectants on equilibrium moisture content was in the following increasing order; mannitol < sorbitol < sodium lactate < propylene glycol < glycerol. The experimental data indicated that sodium lactate has, in practice, potentially positive effect on processing of seasoned squid. During the storage period of 60 days, TBA values increased in all samples tested as humectants concentrations increased up to 10%. However, in the range of 1-7% sodium lactate treatment, the degree of lipid oxidation, browning reactions and mild growth were not high enough to affect the quality of seasoned squid, when compared with conventionally manufactured ones.
A computer simulation was carried out to investigate the optimum capacity of liquid manure tank spreader which is used as a tractor attachment. Soil physical properties, such as soil moisture content, bulk density, soil hardness and soil types were measured in the 10 major rice production area for computer simulation. Mathematical model which include soil physical properties and vehicle factor was used for computer simulation. Most of the soil type of the investigated area was sandy clay loam. Soil moisture content ranged between 30 and 40% mostly. Soil bulk density was in the range of 1,500 to 1,700 kg/$m^3$. Soil hardness ranged between 1 to 18 $cm^2$. Soil hardness incorporate the effects of many soil physical properties such as soil moisture content, soil type and soil bulk density, and so the range of soil hardness is greater than any other physical properties. The capacity of liquid manure tank spreader was above 3,000 kg$_{f}$ for the most of the investigated areas, and mostly in the range of 4,000 to 6,000 $kg_f$ depending upon the slip. But for the soft soil area such as Andong and Asan, the tractor itself has mobility problem and shows no pulling force for some places. For this area, the capacity of liquid manure tank spreader ranged between 1,000 and 2,000 $kg_f$ mostly, so the capacity of liquid manure tank spreader should be designed as a small capacity trailer compared to the other area.mpared to the other area.
The purpose of this research is evaluation of adsorption capacity of the cast for TCE comparing with the yellow clay. Furthermore, the experimental data was fitted with the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm and was found to be apllicable to the adsorption isotherm equation. The soil bed reactor used in this study was made of glass(10 cm in diameter, 100 cm in depth). The cast and yellow clay used as adsorbents were screened with 8-20 mesh mecanically. Results from Equilibrium test with adsorbents showed that the equibrium time of the cast and yellow clay was 9min independent of the amount of the adsorbents. The adsorption efficiencys of the cast and yellow clay for TCE was 66.3% and 56.2%, respectively. In the application of Freundlich isotherm, 1/n of the cast and yellow clay were 0.786 and 0.704, respectively. These results showed that the cast was more available than the yellow clay as TCE adsorbent. The best adsorption capacity was showed at 0% moisture content, 70 ppm inlet concentration and 25$^{\circ}$C temperature.

The newly designed mole drainage plower which is attached to tractor is tested for work capacity comparing with the pulling by man animal and winch. Besides. the effect of desalinization by the mole drainage in reclaimed tideland was observed. The results as obtained in this experiment are as follows: 1. The mole drainage plower of tractor attachment has higher work capacity by 3 to 5 times than that of winch 2. The suitable soil moisture content to carry out the layout of mole drains is from 21 to 25 percent. 3. The new design mole drainage plower requires th lowest cost as comparing with the other methods. 4. Carrying out the mole drainage in reclaimed tideland it is effective in desalinization from 2 to 3 times than the only use of irrigation water. 5. The reasonable depth and interval of mole drains may be 60cm and 3m respectively. 6. The desalinization by the mole drainage increases the yield of rice from 40 to 45 percent in reclaimed tideland.
Experiments on burning process of the industrial wastes were performed on a nozzle-type grate in the industrial waste incinerator with a capacity of 160 kilograms per hour. The temporal variations of temperatures and concentrations of the exhaust gas were measured and analyzed. The synthetic leather waste with the moisture content less than 2% was used. The experimental results show that the CO concentration in the exhaust gas exceeds the limit, 600 ppm, and the gas temperature fluctuates too much when 8 kg of waste was supplied every 3 minutes, equivalent to the capacity of 160kg per hour. That is a typical burning mode of this high-calorific industrial waste. When the smaller unit waste input, 6kg per every 2 min 15 seconds was supplied, we could reduce the fluctuations of the furnace temperature and improve the exhaust emissions, especially the CO concentration.

In this study, lignin, a lignocellulosic biomass, was chemically modified to produce polyethyleneimine-grafted lignin (PKL) with maximum hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] adsorption capacity. Changes in the physicochemical properties due to the cationization of lignin were confirmed through elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and moisture stability evaluation. Alginate (Alg) beads containing PKL (Alg/PKL) were prepared by incorporating cationic lignin into the Alg matrix to apply the prepared PKL in a batch-type water treatment process. The optimal Alg/lignin mixing ratio was selected to increase the Cr(VI) adsorption capacity and minimize lignin elution from the aqueous system. The selected Alg/PKL beads exhibited an excellent Cr(VI) removal capacity of 478.98 mg/g. Isothermal adsorption and thermodynamic analysis revealed that the Cr(VI) removal behavior of the Alg/PKL beads was similar to that of heterogeneous chemical adsorption. In addition, the bulk adsorbent material in the form of beads exhibited adsorption behavior in three stages: surface adsorption, diffusion, and equilibrium.

This study was to investigate the drying mechanism of stratified soil by investigating 'effects of the upper soil on moisture loss of the lower soil and vice versa' and at the same time by examining how the drying progressed in the stratified soils with bare surface and with vegetated surface respectively. There were six plots of the stratified soils with bare surface($A_1- A_6$ plot) and the same other six plots($B_1- B_5$ plot), with vegetated surface(white clover). These six plots were made by permutating two kinds of soils from three kinds of soils; clay loam(CL). Sandy loam(SL). Sand(s). Each layer was leveled by saturating sufficient water. Depth of each plot was 40cm by making each layer 20cm deep and its area. $90{\times}90(cm^2)$. The cell was put at the point of the central and mid-depth of the each layer in the each plot in order to measure the soil moisture by using OHMMETER. soil moisture tester, and movement of soil water from out sides was cut off by putting the vinyl on the four sides. The results obtained were as follow; 1. Drying progressed from the surface layer to the lower layer regardless of plots. There was a tendency thet drying of the upper soil was faster than that of the lower soil and drying of the plot with vegetated surface was also faster than that of the plot with bare surface. 2. Soil moisture was recovered at approximately the field capacity or moisture equivalent by infiltration in the course of drying, when there was a rainfall. 3. Effects of soil texture of the lower soil on dryness of the upper soil in the stratified soil were explained as follows; a) When the lower soil was S and the upper, CL or SL, dryness of the upper soils overlying the lower soil of S was much faster than that overlying the lower soil of SL or CL, because sandy soil, having the small field capacity value and playing a part of the layer cutting off to some extent capillary water supply. Drying of SL was remarkably faster than that of CL in the upper soil. b) When the lower soil was SL and the upper S or CL, drying of the upper soil was the slowest because of the lower SL, having a comparatively large field capacity value. Drying of CL tended to be faster than that of S in the upper soil. c) When the lower soil was CL and the upper S or SL, drying of the upper soil was relatively fast because of the lower CL, having the largest field capacity value but the slowest capillary conductivity. Drying of SL tended to be faster than that of S in the upper soil. 4. According to a change in soil moisture content of the upper soil and the lower soil during a day there was a tendency that soil moisture contents of CL and SL in the upper soil were decreased to its minimum value but that of S increased to its maximum value, during 3 hours between 12.00 and 15.00. There was another tendency that soil moisture contents of CL, SL and S in the lower soil were all slightly decreased by temperature rising and those in a cloudy day were smaller than those in a clear day. 5. The ratio of the accumulated soil moisture consumption to the accumulated guage evaporation in the plot with vegetated surface was generally larger than that in the plot with bare surface. The ratio tended to decrease in the course of time, and also there was a tendency that it mainly depended on the texture of the upper soil at the first period and the texture of the lower soil at the last period. 6. A change in the ratio of the accumulated soil moisture consumption was larger in the lower soil of SL than in the lower soil of S. when the upper soil was CL and the lower, SL and S. The ratio showed the biggest figure among any other plots, and the ratio in the lower soil plot of CL indicated sligtly bigger than that in the lower soil plot of S, when the upper soil was SL and the lower, CL and S. The ratio showed less figure than that of two cases above mentioned, when the upper soil was S and the lower CL and SL and that in the lower soil plot of CL indicated a less ratio than that in the lower soil plot of SL. As a result of this experiments, the various soil layers wero arranged in the following order with regard to the ratio of the accumulated soil moisture consumption: SL/CL>SL/S>CL/SL>CL/S$\fallingdotseq$S/SL>S/CL.
To make the soil moisture proper is the important factor in the seedbed cultivation of Yangjik for producing a good quality of ginseng seedling. This study was carries out to investigate the effect of soil moisture on photosynthesis and yield of ginseng seedling under the different condition of the soil moisture, such as $100{\sim}400$ mbar. Photosynthesis rate was decreased gradually by the reduction of soil moisture, and in particular it was decreased distinctly under the lower condition of soil moisture, such as $300{\sim}400$ mbar. Photosynthesis rate in air temperature of $30^{\circ}C$ was decreased more distinct than that of $25^{\circ}C$, Light saturation point of leaves was at the quantum of $600{\mu}mol/m^3/s$ at $25^{\circ}C$ while it was decreased by $300{\mu}mol/m^3/s$ at $30^{\circ}C$ according to the increase of air temperature. Respiration rate was increased by the increase of quantum, and decreased by the reduction of soil moisture. Respiration rate under the condition of high quantum was increased regardless of air temperature, but it was decreased distinctly under the condition of low soil moisture and high air temperature, such as 400 mbar at $30^{\circ}C$. There were a gradual decrease by the reduction of soil moisture in leaf length, leaf width, chlorophyll content, and water content of leaves, but heat injury ratio was increased distinctly by the reduction of it. Total root weight, root weight per plant, the yield of usable seedling were decreased by the reduction of soil moisture, and optimal content of soil moisture to produce a good quality of seedling was 63% of field capacity or 18.9% in absolute soil moisture content.
