This work presents a simple four-unknown refined integral plate theory for mechanical and thermal buckling behaviors of functionally graded (FG) plates resting on Visco-Pasternak foundations. The proposed refined high order shear deformation theory has a new displacement field which includes indeterminate integral variables and contains only four unknowns in which any shear correction factor not used, with even less than the conventional theory of first shear strain (FSDT). Governing equations are deduced from the principle of minimum total potential energy and a Navier type analytical solution is adopted for simply supported FG plates. The Visco-Pasternak foundations is considered by adding the impact of damping to the usual foundation model which characterized by the linear Winkler's modulus and Pasternak's foundation modulus. The accuracy of the present model is demonstrated by comparing the computed results with those available in the literature. Some numerical results are presented to show the impact of material index, elastic foundation type, and damping coefficient of the foundation, on the mechanical and thermal buckling behaviors of FG plates.

The field plate test has a good potential for determining since it measures both plate pressure and settlement. The deformation modulus of rock mass is differently measured for status of structures. The values of deformation modulus are obtained from laboratory test (uniaxial and triaxial test) and field test (pressuremeter test). Plate load test should be conducted by different loading plate sizes for geological structure of rock mass and scale of structures. In this paper, large plate load tests were performed to predict of structure's behavior and evaluate the ultimate bearing capacity of the foundation on soft rock. Simultaneously, deformation modulus of rock mass was estimated by back analysis of stresses measured in field test under rock mass. Finally, we verified the validation of deformation modulus of rock mass through result of large plate load test and numerical simulation.
The stresses in concrete pavement systems are larger when vehicle loads are applied at pavement edges, and these large stresses significantly affect the behavior and performance of pavements. Therefore, in this study, the stress distribution and the critical stresses in concrete pavements were investigated using a finite element model when dual-wheel single-, tandem-, and tridem-axle loads were applied at pavement edges. First, the stress distribution along the longitudinal and transverse directions was analyzed, and then the effects of slab thickness, concrete elastic modulus, and foundation stiffness on the stress distribution were investigated. The effect of the tire contact pressure related to the tire print area was also studied. The location of the critical stress occurrence in concrete pavements was finally investigated. From this study, it was found that the critical concrete stress due to edge loads became larger as the concrete elastic modulus increased, the slab thickness increased, and the foundation stiffness decreased. The effect of the tire contact pressure on the critical stress was clear as the slab thickness became smaller. The critical stress location in the transverse direction was independent of the concrete elastic modulus and the foundation stiffness; however, it moved into the interior as the slab thickness increased. The critical stress location in the longitudinal direction was under the axle for single- and tandem-axle loads, but for tridem-axle loads, it tended to move under the middle axle from the outer axles as the concrete elastic modulus and/or slab thickness increased and the foundation stiffness decreased.

The variable node plate bending element, ie, the element with one or two additional mid-side nodes is used in the analysis of mat foundation to generate the nearly ideal grid model in which more nodes are defined near the column location. The plate bending element used in this study is the one based on Mindlin/Reissner plate theory with substitute shear strain field and the nodal stresses of that element are obtained by the local smoothing technique. The interaction of the soil material with the mat foundation is modeled with Winkler springs connected to the nodal points in the mat model. The vertical stiffness of the soil material are represented in terms of a modulus of subgrade reaction and are computed in the same way as to the computation of consistent nodal force of uniform surface loading. Several mesh schemes were proposed and tested to find the most suitable scheme for mat foundation analysis.
This paper presents the shear buckling analysis of symmetrically laminated cross-ply plates resting on Pasternak foundation under pure in-plane uniform shear load. The classical laminated plate theory is used for the shear buckling analysis of laminated plates. The Rayleigh-Ritz method with novel plate shape functions is proposed to solve the differential equations and a computer programming is developed to obtain the shear buckling loads. Finally, the effects of the plate aspect ratios, boundary conditions, rotational restraint stiffness, translational restraint stiffness, thickness ratios, modulus ratios and foundation parameters on the shear buckling of the laminated plates are investigated.
Dynamic analyses for a suite of ground of motions were conducted on concrete gravity dam sections to examine the earthquake induced stresses and effective damping. For this purpose, frequency domain methods that rigorously incorporate dam-reservoir-foundation interaction and time domain methods with approximate hydrodynamic foundation interaction effects were employed. The maximum principal tensile stresses and their distribution at the dam base, which are important parameters for concrete dam design, were obtained using the frequency domain approach. Prediction equations were proposed for these stresses and their distribution at the dam base. Comparisons of the stress results obtained using frequency and time domain methods revealed that the dam height and ratio of modulus of elasticity of foundation rock to concrete are significant parameters that may influence earthquake induced stresses. A new effective damping prediction equation was proposed in order to estimate earthquake stresses accurately with the approximate time domain approach.

In this paper, the theory of rectangular plate on the elastic foundation is used to get the relation equation between the effective Young’s modulus and the ice sheet deflection by applying the characteristic length concept, since the model ice sheet is rectangular shape in KRISO (Korea Research Institute for Ships and Ocean Engineering) ice basin. The obtained relation equation is equal to that of using the circular plate theory. A device is made and used to measure the deflection of ice plate using LVDT (Linear Variable Differential Transformer) for several loading cases and the procedure of experiments measuring the deflection used for getting the Young’s modulus is explained. In addition, the flexural strength value obtained through flexural strength experiments is compared with that of finite element analysis using the obtained effective Young’s modulus. Also, a nonlinear FEA (Finite Element Analysis) of cantilever ice beam is done with eroding effect and LS-DYNA result shows the fracture of brittle ice under 1 mm/s velocity load.
Laboratory and field data showed that deep mixed (DM) columns accelerated the rate of consolidation of the soft foundations. Most analyses of consolidation of DM column-improved foundations so far have been based on the elastic theory. In reality, the DM columns may yield due to the stress concentration from the soft soil and its limited strength. The influence of column yielding on the degree of consolidation of the soft foundation improved by DM columns has not been well investigated. A three-dimensional mechanically and hydraulically-coupled numerical method was adopted in this study to investigate the degree of consolidation of the DM column foundation considering column yielding. A unit cell model was used, in which the soil was modeled as a linearly elastic material. For a comparison purpose, the DM column was modeled as an elastic or elastic-plastic material. This study examined the aspects of stress transfer, settlement, and degree of consolidation of the foundations without or with the consideration of the yielding of the DM column. A parametric study was conducted to investigate the influence of the column yielding on the stress concentration ratio, settlement, and average degree of consolidation of the DM column foundation. The stress concentration ratio increased and then decreased to reach a constant value with the increase of the column modulus and time. A simplified method was proposed to calculate the maximum stress concentration ratios under undrained and drained conditions considering the column yielding. The simplified method based on a composite foundation concept could conservatively estimate the consolidation settlement. An increase of the column modulus, area replacement ratio, and/or column permeability increased the rate of consolidation.
The spatial variability of geotechnical properties can lead to the uncertainty of settlement for frozen soil foundation around the oil pipeline, and it can affect the stability of permafrost foundation. In this paper, the elastic modulus, cohesion, angle of internal friction and poisson ratio are taken as four independent random fields. A stochastic analysis model for the uncertain settlement characteristic of frozen soil foundation around an oil pipeline is presented. The accuracy of the stochastic analysis model is verified by measured data. Considering the different combinations for the coefficient of variation and scale of fluctuation, the influences of spatial variability of geotechnical properties on uncertain settlement are estimated. The results show that the stochastic effects between elastic modulus, cohesion, angle of internal friction and poisson ratio are obviously different. The deformation parameters have a greater influence on stochastic settlement than the strength parameters. The overall variability of settlement reduces with the increase of horizontal scale of fluctuation and vertical scale of fluctuation. These results can improve our understanding of the influences of spatial variability of geotechnical properties on uncertain settlement and provide a theoretical basis for the reliability analysis of pipeline engineering in permafrost regions.
This article investigates the static thermo-mechanical response of anisotropic thick laminated composite plates on Visco-Pasternak foundations under various thermal load conditions (linear, non-linear, and uniform) along the transverse direction (thickness) of the plate, while keeping the mechanical load constant. The governing equations, which represent the thermo-mechanical behavior of the composite plate, are derived from the principle of virtual displacements. Using Navier's type solution, these equations are solved for the composite plate with simply supported condition. The Visco-Pasternak foundation type is included by considering the impact of the damping on the classical foundation model, which is modeled by Winkler's linear modulus and Pasternak's shear modulus. The excellent accuracy of the present solution is confirmed by comparing the results with those available in the literature. The study investigates the impact of geometric ratios, thermal expansion coefficient ratio, damping coefficient and foundation parameters on the thermo-mechanical flexural response of the composite plate. Overall, this article provides insights into the behavior of composite plates on visco-Pasternak foundations and may be useful for designing and analyzing composite structures in practical applications.
