  • Via screw theory, a vibration mode can be geometrically interpreted as a pure rotation about the vibration center in a plane and as a twisting motion on a screw in a three dimensional space. In thi s paper, applying the conditions that can be used to diagonalize the stiffness matrix by a parallel axis congruence transformation, the vibration modes and frequency response of an elastically suspended optical disc drive have been analyzed. It is first shown that the system has one plane of symmetry, which enables one to decouple the complicated vibration modes into two sets of modes independent of each other. Having obtained the analytical solutions for the axes of vibrations, the frequency response for a given applied input force has been demonstrated. Most importantly, it has been explained that this research result could be used in the synthesis process of a linear vibration system in order to improve the frequency response.

  • For an elastically suspended rigid body with the planes of symmetry in a three dimensional space, a novel analysis fur the vibration modes is presented. From the decompositions of the stiffness and inertia matrices, the conditions for the existence of pure translation and pure couple modes are analyzed for an elastically suspended rigid body with the planes of symmetry. From this analysis, it can be showed that how the structure of stiffness and inertia must be related in order to produce the pure translation and pure couple modes when an elastically suspended rigid body has one, two, or three planes of symmetry.

  • Tire vibration modes are known to play a key role in vehicle ride and comfort characteristics. Inputs to the tire such as impacts, rough road surface, tire nonuniformities, and tread patterns can potentially excite tire vibration. In this study, experimental modal analysis on the tire with ground contact are performed by impacting the tire in the radial direction at the center of contact patch. To investigate which modes of tire influence the vibration of wheel and axle when the tire is in contact with ground, the vibration characteristics such as frequency response functions, natural frequencies and their mode shapes from tire to wheel/axle are examined.

  • Two kinds of experimental modal analyses have been performed on a radial tire for passenger car under fixed axle. One is the modal analysis to obtain three-dimensional modes of tire using accelerometers and the other is the one to identify cavity resonance frequency using a pressure sensor. From the first analysis, we have obtained three-dimensional natural modes and their decomposed 3-D modes in each direction, which make it possible to grasp the features of the modes that cannot be identified in the conventional 2-D modes and to classify the vibrationall modes into symmetric, non-symmetric, and antisymmetric modes in a simple way by using the experimental results. From the second experimental analysis, the cavity resonance frequency is found. Coomparing the results of the two analyses, we have Identified the three-dimensional mode of the cavity resonance. We also haute shown that natural frequencies of structural vibration depends on inflation Pressure while the cavity resonance does not.

  • In order to study the seismic response of the main plant of steel reinforced concrete (SRC) structure of the CAP1400 nuclear power plant under the influence of different high-mode vibration, the 1/7 model structure was manufactured and its dynamic characteristics was tested. Secondly, the finite element model of SRC frame-bent structure was established, the seismic response was analyzed by mode-superposition response spectrum method. Taking the combination result of the 500 vibration modes as the standard, the error of the base reactions, inter-story drift, bending moment and shear of different modes were calculated. Then, based on the results, the influence of high-mode vibration on the seismic response of the SRC frame-bent structure of the main plant was analyzed. The results show that when the 34 vibration modes were intercepted, the mass participation coefficient of the vertical and horizontal vibration mode was above 90%, which can meet the requirements of design code. There is a large error between the seismic response calculated by the 34 and 500 vibration modes, and the error decreases as the number of modes increases. When 60 modes were selected, the error can be reduced to about 1%. The error of the maximum bottom moment of the bottom column appeared in the position of the bent column. Finally, according to the characteristics of the seismic influence coefficient αj of each mode, the mode contribution coefficient γj•Xji was defined to reflect the contribution of each mode to the seismic action.

  • It is shown, in nonlinear two-degree-of freedom system, that the bifurcating modes are created by the stability changes of normal modes. There are four types of stability criterion, each of which gives rise to a distinct functional form of bifurcating modes; the bifurcating mode is born in the form of eigenfunction through which the stability is changed. Then a procedure is formulated to compute the bifurcating mode by the method of harmonic balance. Application of bifurcating mode to forced vibrations is introduced.

  • Vibration characteristics of the feeding system in a CD-ROM drive are identified by a theoretical modeling as well as vibration experiments. For this purpose, we establish a vibration model due to the rigid-body motion and perform the modal testings using the impact hammer and shaker. The analysis and experiments show that the feeding system has three rigid-body vibration modes in the low-frequency region and two of them come from the tilting modes. In order to remove the harmful tilting modes for the tracking servo control, a methodology to find the optimal positions of the dampers is also proposed in this study.

  • According to the trends of construction of large size vessel with high power the natural frequencies of the bending modes of propeller blades have been lower than the past. Therefore, it is expected that the noise and vibration problems of the marine propeller are frequently occurred. As main issue of the propeller noise and vibration problem, the cavitation noise and singing noise due to the flow induced excitation of the bending modes of propeller blade in the high frequency range has been studied by the hydrodynamic researchers in the view point of the excitation force reduction. In this paper, the vibration mode characteristics of propeller with a large diameter in very large vessel are investigated by the vibration analysis of the finite element method using MSC/Nastran and the vibration measurement by the impact test on the propeller blade. According to the results, the natural frequencies of various blade bending modes in water entrained condition could be estimated from the natural frequencies taken by the measurement and free vibration analysis in the dry condition, and it could be estimated how the high frequency noise such as singing is generated from the blade bending modes.

  • Modified version of subspace iteration method using accelerated starting vectors is proposed to efficiently calculate free vibration modes of structures. Proposed method employs accelerated Lanczos starting vectors that can reduce the number of iterations in the subspace iteration method. Proposed method is more efficient than the conventional method when the number of required modes is relatively small. To verify the efficiency of proposed method, two numerical examples are presented.

  • An analytical method using the substructure synthesis and assumed modes method is developed to investigate the effect of flexibility of bladed disk assembly on vibrational modes of flexible rotor system. In modeling the system, Coriolis forces, gyroscopic moments, and centrifugal stiffening effects are taken into account. Then the coupled vibrations between the shaft and bladed disk are extensively investigated using simplistic models, as the shaft rotational speed and the pretwist and stagger angles of blade are varied.
