Dynamic response measurements from natural excitation were carried out for 25- and 42-story buildings to evaluate their inherent properties, such as natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios. Both are reinforced concrete buildings adopting a core wall, or with shear walls as the major lateral force resisting system, but frames are added in the plan or elevation. In particular, shear walls in a 25-story building are converted to frames from the 4th floor level downwards while maintaining a core wall throughout, resulting in a fairly complex structure. Due to this, along with similar stiffness characteristics in the principal directions, significantly coupled and closely spaced modes of motion are expected in this building, making identification rather difficult. By using various state-of-the-art system identification methods, the modal parameters are extracted, and the results are then compared. Three frequency-domain and four time-domain based operational modal identification methods are considered. Overall, all natural frequencies and damping ratios estimated from the different identification methods showed a greater consistency for both buildings, while mode shapes exhibited some degree of discrepancy, varying from method to method. On the other hand, in comparison with analysis results obtained using the initial finite element(FE) models, test results exhibited a significant difference of about doubled frequencies, at least for the three lower modes in both buildings. To improve the correlation between test and analysis, a few manual schemes of FE model updating based on plausible reasons have been applied, and acceptable results are obtained. The advantages and disadvantages of each identification method used are addressed, and some difficulties that might arise from the updating of FE models, including automatic procedures, for such large structures are carefully discussed.

Modern solid-state gyroscopes (HRG) with hemispherical resonators from high-purity quartz glass and special surface superfinishing and ultrathin gold coating become the best instruments for precise-grade inertial reference units (IRU) targeting long-term space missions. Designing of these sensors could be a notable contribution into development of Korea as a space nation. In participial, 40mm diameter thin-shell resonator from high-purity fused quartz, fabricated as a single-piece with its supporting stem has been designed, machined, etched, tuned, tested, and delivered by STM Co. (ATS of Ukraine) several years ago; an extremely-high Q-factor (upto 10~20 millions) has been shown. Understanding of the best way how to match such a unique sensor with inner glass assembly of the gyro means how to use the high potential in a maximal extent; and this has become the urgent task. Inner quartz glass assembly has a very thin indium (In) layer soldered the resonator and its silica base (case), but effects of internal resonances between operational modal pair of the shell-cup and its side (parasitic) modes can notable degrade the potential of the sensor as a whole, instead of so low level of resonator's intrinsic losses. Unfortunately, there are special combinations of dimensions of the parts (so-called, "resonant sizes"), when intensive losses of energy occurs. The authors proposed to use the length of stem's fixture as an additional design parameter to avoid such cases. So-called, a cyclic scheme of finite element method (FEM) and ANSYS software were employed to estimate different combinations of gyro assembly parameters. This variant has no mismatches of numerical origin due to FEM's discrete mesh. The optimum length and dangerous "resonant lengths" have been found. The special attention has been paid to analyses of 3D effects in a cup-stem transient zone, including determination of a difference between the positions of geometrical Pole of the resonant hemisphere and of its "dynamical Pole", i.e., its real zone of oscillation node. Boundary effects between the shell (cup) and 3D short "beams" (inner and outer stems) have been ranged. The results of the numerical experiments have been compared with the classic model of a quasi-hemispherical shell band with inextensional midsurface, and the solution using Rayleigh's functions of the $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ kinds. To guarantee the truth of the recommended sizes to a designer of the real device, the analytical and FEM results have been compared with experimental data for a party of real resonators. The consistency of the results obtained by different means has been shown with errors less than 5%. The results notably differ from the data published earlier by different researchers.

We present the effects of temperature (between 10 K and 298 K) and of hole concentration on the frequency and intensity of characteristic phonons in polycrystalline $La_2CuO_4-related$ compounds using FT-IR spectros-copy. The influences of the concentration of carrier doped on the phonon modes are prominent in the IR spectra of $La_2CuO_4-related$ compounds. For $La_2-xSrxCuO_4({\chi}=$ 0.00, 0.03, 0.07, 0.10, and 0.15) and electrochemically (or chemically) oxidized $La_2CuO_4$, the intensities of the transverse oxygen mode around 680cm $-^1$ which cor-responds mainly to Cu-O(1) stretching vibration in the basal plane of CuO6 octahedron, are decreased and dis-appeared depending on the Sr-substitution rate and the amount of excess oxygen, while the longitudinal oxygen mode around 510 cm $-^1$ corresponding to the Cu-O(2) stretching in the basal plane of CuO6 octahedron are near-ly invariable. In particular, after two cycles of cooling-heating between 10 K and 298 K for these sample, the phonons around 680 cm $-^1$ are blue shif 13-15 cm $-^1$, while the phonons around 510 cm $-^1$ are nearly constant. The introduction of the charge carrier by doping would give rise to the small contraction of CuO6 oc-tahedron as Cu $^3+$ requires a smaller site than Cu $^2+$, which results in the shortening of the Cu-O(1) bond length and Cu-O(2) bond length with the increased La-O(2) bond length. These results in the frequency shift of the characteristic phonons. The IR spectra of $La_2Li0.5Cu0.5O_4$ which exhibits an insulator behavior despite the $Cu^3+$ of nearly 100%, corroborate our IR interpretations. The mode around 710 cm $-^1$ corresponding to Cu-O(1) stretching vibration is still strongly remained even at low temperature (10 K). Thus, we conclude that the con-duction electrons formed within $CuO_2$ planes of $La_2CuO_4-related$ superconductors screen more effectively the transverse oxygen breathing mode around 680 $cm-^1$ depending on the concentration of the doped charge carrier in $La_2CuO_4-related$ compounds, which might use as a superconductivity probe.

The finite element method(FEM) has been commonly used for structural dynamic analysis. However, the direct global application of FEM to large complex structures such as ships and offshore structures requires considerable computational efforts, and remarkably more in structural dynamic optimization problems. Adoption of the component-mode synthesis method is an efficient means to overcome the above difficulty. Among three classes of the component-mode synthesis method, the free-interface mode method is recognized to have the advantages of better computational efficiency and easier implementation of substructures' experimental results, but the disadvantage of lower accuracy in analytical results. In this paper, an advanced method to improve the accuracy in the application of the free-interface mode method for the vibration analysis of large complex structures is presented. In order to compensate the truncation effect of the higher modes of substructures in the synthesis process, both residual inertia and stiffness effects are taken into account and a frequency shifting technique is introduced in the formulation of the residual compliance of substructures. The introduction of the frequency shrift ins not only excludes cumbersome manipulation of singular matrices for semi-definite substructural systems but gives more accurate results around the specified shifting frequency. Numerical examples of typical structural models including a ship-like two dimensional finite element model show that the analysis results based on the presented method are well competitive in accuracy with those obtained by the direst global FEM analysis for the frequencies which are lower than the highest one employed in the synthesis with remarkably higher computational efficiency and that the presented method is more efficient and accurate than the fixed-interface mode method.

The main object of this research is to minimize the shock effects which frequently result in fatal damage in wind met mast on impact of barge. The collision between wind met mast and barge is generally a complex problem and it is often not practical to perform rigorous finite element analyses to include all effects and sequences during the collision. LS-dyna generally purpose explicit finite element code, which is a product of ANSYS software, is used to model and analyze the non-linear response of the met mast due to barge collision. A significant part of the collision energy is dissipated as strain energy and except for global deformation modes, the contribution from elastic straining can normally be neglected. On applying impact force of a barge to wind met mast, the maximum acceleration, internal energy and plastic strain were calculated for each load cases using the finite element method and then compare it, varying to the velocity of barge, with one varying to the thickness of rubber fender conditions. Hence, we restrict the present research mainly to the wind met mast and also parametric study has been carried out with various velocities of barge, thickness of wind met mast, thickness and Mooney-Rivlin coefficient of rubber fender with experimental data. The equation of motion of the wind met mast is derived under the assumption that it was ignored vertical movement effect of barge on sea water. Such an analyzing method which was developed so far, make it possible to determine the proper size and material properties of rubber fender and the optimal moving conditions of barge, and finally, application method can be suggested in designing process of rubber fender considering barge impact.

In this paper, a new indirect feedback active noise control (ANC) scheme based on the fundamental frequency estimation is proposed for systems with a harmonic noise. When reference signals necessary for feedforward ANC configuration is difficult to obtain, the conventional ANC algorithms for multi-tonal noise do not measure the reference signals but generate them with the estimated frequencies. However, the beating phenomena, in which certain frequency components of the noise vanish intermittently, may make the adaptive frequency estimation difficult. The confusion in the estimated frequencies due to the beating phenomena makes the generated reference signals worthless. The proposed algorithm consists of two parts. The first part is a reference generator using the fundamental frequency estimation and the second one is the conventional feedforward control. We propose the fundamental frequency estimation algorithm using decision rules, which is insensitive to the beating phenomena. In addition, the proposed fundamental frequency estimation algorithm has good tracking capability and lower variance of frequency estimation error than that of the conventional cascade ANF method. We are also able to control all interested modes of the noise, even which cannot be estimated by the conventional frequency estimation method because of the poor SIN ratio. We verify the performance of the proposed ANC method through simulations for the measured cabin noise of a passenger ship and the measured time-varying engine booming noise of a passenger vehicle.

To monitor the wind-induced responses of buildings, conventional real-time kinematic (RTK) methods based on two global positioning system (GPS) receivers (e.g., a reference and a rover) are widely applied. However, these methods can encounter problems such as difficulty in securing and maintaining a space for a reference station. With the recently developed virtual reference station (VRS)-RTK approach, the position of a structure can be measured using only a rover receiver. In this study, to evaluate the applicability of VRS-RTK methods in monitoring the lateral structural responses of frame structures, we performed free vibration tests on a one-story frame model (the first natural frequency of 1 Hz) and a three-story frame model (the first natural frequency of 0.85 Hz). To assess the reliability of the displacement and acceleration responses measured by the GPS, we performed a concurrent measurement using laser displacement sensors and an accelerometer. The accelerometer results were consistent with the GPS measurements in terms of the time history and frequency content. Furthermore, to derive an appropriate sampling rate for the continuous monitoring of buildings, the errors in the displacement responses were evaluated at different GPS sampling rates (5, 10, 20 Hz). The results indicate that as the sampling rate increased, the errors in the displacement responses decreased. In addition, in the three-story model, all modal components (first, second, and third modes) could be recorded at a sampling rate of 20 Hz.
The aim of the study is to show the results of complex shaking table experimental investigation focused on the response of two models of cylindrical steel tanks under mining tremors and moderate earthquakes, including the aspects of diagnosis of structural damage. Firstly, the impact and the sweep-sine tests have been carried out, so as to determine the dynamic properties of models filled with different levels of liquid. Then, the models have been subjected to seismic and paraseismic excitations. Finally, one fully filled structure has been tested after introducing two different types of damages, so as to verify the method of damage diagnosis. The results of the impact and the sweep-sine tests show that filling the models with liquid leads to substantial reduction in natural frequencies, due to gradually increasing overall mass. Moreover, the results of sweep-sine tests clearly indicate that the increase in the liquid level results in significant increase in the damping structural ratio, which is the effect of damping properties of liquid due to its sloshing. The results of seismic and paraseismic tests indicate that filling the tank with liquid leads initially to considerable reduction in values of acceleration (damping effect of liquid sloshing); however, beyond a certain level of water filling, this regularity is inverted and acceleration values increase (effect of increasing total mass of the structure). Moreover, comparison of the responses under mining tremors and moderate earthquakes indicate that the power amplification factor of the mining tremors may be larger than the seismic power amplification factor. Finally, the results of damage diagnosis of fully filled steel tank model indicate that the forms of the Fourier spectra, together with the frequency and power spectral density values, can be directly related to the specific type of structural damage. They show a decrease in the natural frequencies for the model with unscrewed support bolts (global type of damage), while cutting the welds (local type of damage) has resulted in significant increase in values of the power spectral density for higher vibration modes.

Accurate estimation of modal parameters (i.e., natural frequency, damping ratio) of tall buildings is of great importance to their structural design, structural health monitoring, vibration control, and state assessment. Based on the combination of variational mode decomposition, smoothed discrete energy separation algorithm-1, and Half-cycle energy operator (VMD-SH), this paper presents a method for structural modal parameter estimation. The variational mode decomposition is proved to be effective and reliable for decomposing the mixed-signal with low frequencies and damping ratios, and the validity of both smoothed discrete energy separation algorithm-1 and Half-cycle energy operator in the modal identification of a single modal system is verified. By incorporating these techniques, the VMD-SH method is able to accurately identify and extract the various modes present in a signal, providing improved insights into its underlying structure and behavior. Subsequently, a numerical study of a four-story frame structure is conducted using the Newmark-β method, and it is found that the relative errors of natural frequency and damping ratio estimated by the presented method are much smaller than those by traditional methods, validating the effectiveness and accuracy of the combined method for the modal identification of the multi-modal system. Furthermore, the presented method is employed to estimate modal parameters of a full-scale tall building utilizing acceleration responses. The identified results verify the applicability and accuracy of the presented VMD-SH method in field measurements. The study demonstrates the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed VMD-SH method in accurately estimating modal parameters of tall buildings from acceleration response data.
An optimal sensor placement (OSP) method based on structural subsection technique (SST) and model reduction technique was proposed for modal identification of truss structures, which was conducted using genetic algorithm (GA). The constraints of GA variables were determined by SST in advance. Subsequently, according to model reduction technique, the optimal group of master degrees of freedom and the optimal objective function value were obtained using GA in a case of the given number of sensors. Correspondingly, the optimal number of sensors was determined according to optimal objective function values in cases of the different number of sensors. The proposed method was applied on a scaled jacket offshore platform to get its optimal number of sensors and the corresponding optimal sensor layout. Then modal kinetic energy and modal assurance criterion were adopted to evaluate vibration energy and mode independence property. The experiment was also conducted to verify the effectiveness of the selected optimal sensor layout. The results showed that experimental modes agreed reasonably well with numerical results. Moreover the influence of the proposed method using different optimal algorithms and model reduction technique on optimal results was also compared. The results showed that the influence was very little.
