Femtosecond laser machining has been applied for creating a sensor function in silica glass optical fibers. Femtosecond laser pulses make it possible to fabricate micro structures in processed regions of a very thin glass fiber line because femtosecond laser pulses can extremely minimize thermal effects. With the laser machining to optical fiber using a single shot of 210-fs laser at a wavelength of 800 nm, it was observed that a processed region surrounded a thin layer which seemed to be a hollow cavity monitored by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This study aims at a theoretical investigation for the processed region by using a numerical analysis in order to embed sensing function to optical fibers. Numerical methods based finite element method (FEM) has been used for an optical waveguide modeling. This report suggests two types modeling and describes a comparative study on optical losses obtained by the experiment and the numerical analysis.
Heat generation and temperature of a battery is usually presented by an equation of current. This means that we need to adopt time domain calculation to obtain thermal characteristics of the battery. To avoid the complicated calculations using time domain, 'state of charge (SOC)' can be used as an independent variable. A SOC based calculation method is elucidated through the comparison between the calculated results and experimental results together. Experiments are carried for rapid resistive discharge of a large-capacitive lithium secondary battery to evaluate variations of cell potential, current and temperature. Calculations are performed based on open-circuit cell potential (SOC,T), internal resistance (SOC,T) and entropy (SOC) with specific heat capacity.
This paper presents the modeling methodology of Zinc diffusion process applied for high-speed avalanche photodiode fabrication using neural networks. Three process factors (sealing pressure, amount of Zn$_3$P$_2$ source per volume, and doping concentration of diffused layer) are examined by means of D-optimal design experiment. Then, diffusion rate and doping concentration of Zinc in diffused layer are characterized by a static response model generated by training fred-forward error back-propagation neural networks. It is observed that the process models developed here exhibit good agreement with experimental results.

Incorrections between model and plant are parameter, system order uncertainties and modeling error due to disturbance like friction. Therefore to achieve a good tracking performance, adaptive discrete time sliding mode tracking controller is used under time-varying desired position. Based on the diophantine equation, a new discrete time sliding function is defined and utilized for the control law. Robustness is increased by using both a recursive least-square method and a sliding function-based nonlinear feedback. The effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm is proved by the results of simulation and experiment.
In this study, we put our object to carry out adaptive modeling of cutting process in turning system, and to find out the optimal cutting conditions to maximize material removal rate under some constraints. We used a back-propagation neural network to model the cutting process adaptively and a genetic algorithm to find out optimal cutting conditions. The experimental results show that a back-propagation neural network could model the cutting process effciently, and optimized cutting conditions for maximizing the material removal rate were obtained through the adaptive process model and genetic algorithms. Therefore, the proposed approach can be applied to the real machining system.
In this paper, we describe a cross-morpheme pronunciation variation model which is especially useful for constructing morpheme-based pronunciation lexicon for Korean LVCSR. There are a lot of pronunciation variations occurring at morpheme boundaries in continuous speech. Since phonemic context together with morphological category and morpheme boundary information affect Korean pronunciation variations, we have distinguished pronunciation variation rules according to the locations such as within a morpheme, across a morpheme boundary in a compound noun, across a morpheme boundary in an eojeol, and across an eojeol boundary. In 33K-morpheme Korean CSR experiment, an absolute improvement of 1.16% in WER from the baseline performance of 23.17% WER is achieved by modeling cross-morpheme pronunciation variations with a context-dependent multiple pronunciation lexicon.

Most of enterprises depend on a data modeler during developing their management information systems. In formulating business requirements for information systems, they widely and naturally use the interview method between a data modeler and a field worker. But, the discrepancy between both parties would certainly cause information loss and distortion that lead to let the systems not faithful to real business works. To improve or avoid modeler-dependant data modeling process, many automated data design CASE tools have been introduced. However, since most of traditional CASE tools just support drawing works for conceptual data design, a data modeler could not generate an ERD faithful to real business works and a user could not use them without any knowledge on database. Although some CASE tools supported conceptual data design, they still required too much preliminary database knowledge for a user. Against these traditional CASE tools, we proposed a Requirement-Oriented Entity Relationship Model for automated data design tool, called ROERM. Based on Non-Stop Methodology, ROERM adopts inner systematic modules for complete and sound ERD that is faithful to real field works, where modules are composed of interaction modules with a user, rules of schema operations and sentence translations. In addition to structure design of ROERM, we also devise detailed algorithms and perform an experiment for a case study.
The main torsional vibration source of the powertrain is the fluctuation of engine torque. The gear rattle is impact generating in the backlash of the free gear due to this torsional vibration. Optimization of the clutch torsional characteristic is one of the effective method to reduce the idle gear rattle. Many researches have been reported on this problem but only few of them give sufficient consideration to the detailed clutch modeling and the experiment. This paper pays attention to the optimization of clutch design parameters and the experiment to reduce the idle gear rattle vibration and noise.
