  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the internal fitness of prostheses fabricated with non-contact extra-oral scanner and those fabricated with intra-oral video scanner, with a comparative accuracy analyses of their precision and trueness. Methods: A polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) model was fabricated by replicating a master model. The prostheses in the first group were fabricated based on the PMMA model with an intra-oral video scanner (IVS group). Following the fabrication of work models with Type IV Stone that were based on the PMMA model, the prostheses in the second group were fabricated with a non-contact extra-oral scanner (ENB group). The precision and trueness of the prostheses were calculated from comparisons of the three-dimensional images of the internal surfaces of the prostheses and those of the master model. Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to determine the statistical significance, with the level of type 1 error set at 0.05. Results: Trueness (P < 0.009) and precision (P < 0.001) did not differ significantly between the ENB and IVS groups. The IVS group exhibited lower trueness values and larger precision values than the ENB group. Conclusion: Although no significant differences were found in the internal fitness of the prostheses that were fabricated by the two different scanners, the intraoral video scanner-fabricated prostheses had better trueness, whereas the non-contact extra-oral scanner-fabricated prostheses had better precision.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity of digital models fabricated by difference optical source of non-contact 3D dental scanner. Methods: A master model with the prepared upper full arch tooth was used. Stone model(N=10) were produced from master model, and on the other hands, digital models were made with the 3D dental scanner(Blue, white, red optical source). The linear distance between the reference points were measured and analyzed on the Delcam $Copycad^{(R)}$ graphic software. The results were statistically analyzed using the one-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test(${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: There were considerable differences in mean values between optical source within each color(blue, white, red), and this difference was not statistically significant(p>0.05). Conclusion : Three different color of dental scanner optical source showed clinically acceptable accuracies of full arch digital model produced by them. Besides, these results will have to be confirmed in further clinical studies.

  • It is very important to inspect the color of printed texture in the textile process. The standard colorimetric system used for the recognition of the color in the textile industry. It uses XYZ color system defined by CIE (Commission Internationale de 1Eclairage), but is too expensive. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a color inspection system of the printed texture using a color scanner. Because the scanner uses RGB value for color, it is necessary the mapping from RGB to XYZ. However, the mapping is not simple, and the scanner has even positional deviation because of the geometric characteristics. To transform from RGB to XYZ, we used a NN (neural network) model and also compensated the positional deviation. In real experiments, we could get fairly exact XYZ value from the proposed color inspection system in spite of using a color scanner with large measuring area.

  • It is very important to inspect color of printed texture in the textile process. To distinguish the color of the printed texture, RGB color values obtained from a scanner must be transformed to the standard colorimetric system used in the textile industry. It is XYZ color system that is defined by CIE(Commission Internationale do 1Eclairage). The mapping from RGB to XYZ color values is not simple and the scanner has even a positional deviation of RGB colors. In this paper an automatic color inspection method using a general scanning machine is presented. We used a U(neural network) model to map RGB to XYZ and compensate the positional error. In the real experiments, this inspection system shows to get very exact XYZ values from the traditional scanner regardless of the measuring position.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the repeatability and reproducibility of two dental scanners. Methods: The master die and the stone replicas(Kavo, Germany) were digitized in touch-probe scanner(Incise, Renishaw, UK), white light scanner(Identica, Medit, Korea) to create 3-dimensional surface-models. The number of points in the point clouds from each reading were calculated and used as the CAD reference model(CRM). Discrepancies between the points in the 3-dimensional surface models and the corresponding CRM were measured by a matching-software(Power-Inspect R2, Delcam Plc, UK). The t-student test for one samples were used for statistical analysis. Results: The reproducibility of both scanner was within $3{\mu}m$, based on mean value. The mean value between measurements made directly on the touch probe scanner digital models and those made on the white light scanner digital models was $2.20-2.90{\mu}m$, and was statistically significant(P<0.05). Conclusion: With respect to adequate data acquisition, the reproducibility of dental scanner differs. Three-dimensional analysis can be applied to differential quality analysis of the manufacturing process as well as to evaluation of different analysis methods.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of model according to three types of dental scanner. A maxillary acrylic model was prepared and duplicated 10 times by silicone impression materials. Corresponding working casts were formed from scannable stone and got a 3-dimensional digital models using three different scanners. The distance of each measurement region was measured using vernier calipers and the respective program. One-way ANOVA and the Tukey honestly significant difference post hoc test (${\alpha}=0.05$) was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 21.0. Overall, the stone cast is smaller than the digital models in measurement distance. And measuring point value of laser scanner showed the most similar values and measurement points value of digital vernier calipers. Digital model of white light scanner showed similar values in the measurement points value of the blue light scanner. In conclusion, the laser scanner showed the best accuracy among the three types of dental scanner. However, the difference between the digital models and the stone cast can be accommodated in making prostheses. Thereby, three types of dental scanner are available in a clinically acceptable range.

  • Reverse engineering has been widely used for the shape reconstruction of an object without CAD data and the measurement of clay or wood models for the development of new products. To generate a surface from measured points by a laser scanner, typical steps include the scanning of a clay or wood model and the generation of manufacturing data like STL file. A laser scanner has a great potential to get geometrical data of a model for its fast measuring speed and higher precision. The data from a laser scanner are composed of many line stripes of points. A new approach to remove point data with Delaunay triangulation is introduced to deal with problems during reverse engineering process. This approach can be used to reduce a number of measuring data from laser scanner within tolerance, thus it can avoid the time for handling point data during modelling process and the time for verifying and slicing STL model during RP process.

  • It is important to establish the transformational relation between scanned image coordinates and digital image coordinates because the coordinate system of digital image is transformed from scanned image coordinate system through scanning work. And, some researches are required in scanning works to correct the deformation that is due to the motion of scanner. In this study, some procedures are applied to determine the optimal calibration model equation which can calibrate the scanner. As a result the optimal calibration model equation for the object scanner is determined The procedure of this study can applied to the calibration of other types of scanner, because the procedures are done with the analysis of geometrical properties rather than the analysis of physical properties.
