  • The present paper describes the experimental study on the fixed-type wave-energy conversion system, consisting of the OWC-type wave-energy absorbing chamber and the duct for the air turbine. For simplicity, a screen of wire mesh was employed in place of an air turbine in order to simulate its effects on OWC chamber. Experiments were performed at the towing tank in regular waves with the frequency range of 0.22-0.75Hz. Comparison wish the numerical prediction using a potential flow-based method [4] was made to validate the capability of numerical code. It was shown that the agreements between measured and calculated results are quite good, giving a confidence in prediction method. Simulation of air turbine using a wire-mesh screen was successful, at least in a qualitative sense, to investigate the inter action between the OWC chamber and an air turbine. Results also showed that the effects of a wire-mesh screen on chamber efficiency are negligible, and the present model can be effectively utilized for the practical use in ocean waves with the frequency range under 0.3Hz.

  • This study was performed to offer convenience to determine the vertical dimension of occlusion of edentulous patients by investigating the interocclusal distances at physiologic rest position, at speaking of /m/ sound, and some korean short sounds, that is, /mem/ and /beb/ sounds, which were found in our previous study with dentulous subjects. Ten edentulous subjects - 6 men and 4 women - were selected for this study. The frequencies at speaking of /m/, /mem/, and /beb/ sounds were analyzed with Computerized speech lab($CSL^{TM}$, Model 4300B, Software version 5.X, Kay Elemetrics Co. U.S.A.). And the interocclusal distances at physiologic rest position and at speaking of /m/, /mem/, and /beb/ sounds were measured with K6 diagnostic system(Myo-tronics, Inc. U.S.A.). The results of this study were as follows ; 1. In the acoustic analysis by Computerized speech lab, frequencies of sounds of edentulous subjects with complete denture at speaking of /m/, /mem/, and /beb/ were similar to those of dentulous subjects. 2. In the linear correlation by Pearson's correlation coefficient, the interocclusal distance at physiologic rest position was most similar to those of speaking /mem/ sound, secondly /m/ sound, and thirdly /beb/ sound(p<0.05). In reliability by Cronbach's alpha, the results were reliable with alpha value 0.97. 3. It was found by Levene's test for equality of variance that the difference between men and women in the interocclusal distances at physiologic rest position and at speaking of /m/, /mem/, and /beb/ sounds was not statistically significant(p>0.05).

  • The objective of this work is to study the feasibility of the preparation of the activated carbon (AC) from coconut tree flowers using high temperature fluidized bed reactor (HTFBR). The activating agent used in this work is steam. The reactor was operated at various activation temperature (650, 700, 750, 800 and $850^{\circ}C$) and activation time (30, 60, 120 and 240 min) for the production of AC from coconut tree flowers. Effect of activation time and activation temperature on the quality of the AC preparation was observed. Prepared AC was characterized in-terms of iodine number, methylene blue number, methyl violet number, ethylene glycol mono ethyl ether (EGME) surface area and SEM photographs. The best quality of AC from coconut tree flowers (CFC) was obtained at an activation temperature and time of $850^{\circ}C$ and 1 hr restectively. The effectiveness of carbon prepared from coconut tree flowers in adsorbing crystal violet from aqueous solution has been studied as a function of agitation time, carbon dosage, and pH. The adsorption of crystal violet onto AC followed second order kinetic model. Adsorption data were modeled using both Langmuir and Freundlich classical adsorption isotherms. The adsorption capacity $q_m$ was 277.78 mg/g., equilibrium time was found to be 180 min. This adsorbent from coconut tree flowers was found to be effective for the removal of CV dye.

  • This paper presents a high-frequency boost type ZVS-PWM chopper-fed DC-DC power converter with a single active auxiliary edge-resonant snubber at the load stage which can be designed for power conditioners such as solar photovoltaic generation, fuel cell generation, battery and super capacitor energy storages. Its principle operation in steady-state is described in addition to a prototype setup. The experimental results of boost type ZVS-PWM chopper proposed here, are evaluated and verified with a practical design model in terms of its switching voltage and current waveforms, the switching v-i trajectory and the temperature performance of IGBT module, the actual power conversion efficiency, and the EMI of radiated and conducted emissions, and then discussed and compared with the hard switching scheme from an experimental point of view. Finally, this paper proposes a practical method to suppress parasitic oscillation due to the active auxiliary resonant switch at ZCS turn-off mode transition with the aid of an additional lossless clamping diode loop, and can be reduced the EMI conducted emission.

  • Breast cancer is the most frequently appearing cancer in women, these days. To reduce mortality of breast cancer, periodic check-up is strongly recommended. X-ray mammography is one of powerful diagnostic imaging systems to detect 50~100 um micro-calcification which is the early sign of breast cancer. Although x-ray mammography has very high spatial resolution, it is not easy yet to distinguish cancerous tissue from normal tissues in mammograms and new tissue characterizing methods are required. Recently ultrasound elastography technique has been developed, which uses the phenomenon that cancerous tissue is harder than normal tissues. However its spatial resolution is not enough to detect breast cancer. In order to develop a new elastography system with high resolution we are developing x-ray elasticity imaging technique. It uses the small differences of tissue positions with and without external breast compression and requires an algorithm to detect tissue displacement. In this paper, computer simulation is done for preliminary study of x-ray elasticity imaging. First, 3D x-ray breast phantom for modeling woman's breast is created and its elastic model for FEM (finite element method) is generated. After then, FEM experiment is performed under the compression of the breast phantom. Using the obtained displacement data, 3D x-ray phantom is deformed and the final mammogram under the compression is generated. The simulation result shows the feasibility of x-ray elasticity imaging. We think that this preliminary study is helpful for developing and verifying a new algorithm of x-ray elasticity imaging.

  • To provide broadband ISDN service for the users in scattered locations, the application of satellite communications network is seriously considered. To trans mit ATM cells efficiently in satellite communications, it is effective to use TDM A method. However, it is necessary to have a method to compensate the cell delayvari-ation caused by the difference between TDMA and ATM. This paper optimized the cell control time(Tc) when traffic inputs have poisson or markov modulated poisson process by applying cell delay variation characteristics of time stamp method, which has the most advantages among compensation methods or cell delay variation. This paper also intorduces a method of reducing the cell clumping phenomena by adapting discrete time stamp method, including the analysis and evalutation of the range of required quality of CDV distribution by ATM transmission. The result of the experiment shows that CDV distribution-range can be controlled to 1.2$\times$Tc which reduces overall cell delay variation by discrrete time stamp method.

  • The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute has developed an advanced fast reactor concept, KALIMER-600, which satisfies the Generation IV reactor design goals of sustainability, economics, safety, and proliferation resistance. The concept enables an efficient utilization of uranium resources and a reduction of the radioactive waste. The core design has been developed with a strong emphasis on proliferation resistance by adopting a single enrichment fuel without blanket assemblies. In addition, a passive residual heat removal system, shortened intermediate heat-transport system piping and seismic isolation have been realized in the reactor system design as enhancements to its safety and economics. The inherent safety characteristics of the KALIMER-600 design have been confirmed by a safety analysis of its bounding events. Research on important thermal-hydraulic phenomena and sensing technologies were performed to support the design study. The integrity of the reactor head against creep fatigue was confirmed using a CFD method, and a model for density-wave instability in a helical-coiled steam generator was developed. Gas entrainment on an agitating pool surface was investigated and an experimental correlation on a critical entrainment condition was obtained. An experimental study on sodium-water reactions was also performed to validate the developed SELPSTA code, which predicts the data accurately. An acoustic leak detection method utilizing a neural network and signal processing units were developed and applied successfully for the detection of a signal up to a noise level of -20 dB. Waveguide sensor visualization technology is being developed to inspect the reactor internals and fuel subassemblies. These research and developmental efforts contribute significantly to enhance the safety, economics, and efficiency of the KALIMER-600 design concept.

  • Until now, a comparative study on fully and partially-connected steel shear walls leading to enhancing strength and stiffness reduction of partially-connected steel plate shear wall structures has not been reported. In this paper a number of 4-story and 8-story steel plate shear walls, are considered with three different connection details of infill plate to surrounding frame. The specimens are modeled using nonlinear finite element method verified excellently with the experimental results and analyzed under monotonic loading. A comparison between initial stiffness and shear strength of models as well as percentage of shear force by model boundary frame and infill plate are performed. Moreover, a comparison between energy dissipation, ductility factor and distribution of Von-Mises stresses of models are presented. According to the results, the initial stiffness, shear resistance, energy dissipation and ductility of the models with beam-only connected infill plates (SSW-BO) is found to be about 53%, 12%, 15% and 48% on average smaller than those of models with fully-connected infill plates (SPSW), respectively. However, performance characteristics of semi-supported steel shear walls (SSSW) containing secondary columns by simultaneously decreasing boundary frame strength and increasing thickness of infill plates are comparable to those of SPSWs. Results show that by using secondary columns as well as increasing thickness of infill plates, the stress demands on boundary frame decreases substantially by as much as 35%. A significant increase in infill plate share on shear capacity by as much as 95% and 72% progress for the 4-story SSW-BO and 8-story SSSW8, respectively, as compared with non-strengthened counterparts. A similar trend is achieved by strengthening secondary columns of 4-story SSSW leading to an increase of 50% in shear force contribution of infill plate.

  • The increasing interest in the use of Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) systems in Korea enables to enforce speed violation by National Police Agency. We have analyzed the mechanism of ASE systems on traffic safety throughout Korea. 1 The data collected on a 2km road-section of each 32 ASE stations during one rear period indicate significant safety improvement. The results were (a) a decrease in the total number of accidents of 28%, (b) a decrease in the number of fatalities of 60%. 2. The study also that ASE systems are effective to reduce average speed, speed variance, and short headway. 3. Based on the operational data collected at 15 locations, an aggregate safety prediction model is proposed as a multiple regressions form. The primary operational variables that appear to affect the frequencies of accident are : average speed, speed variance, and the number of vehicles exceeding 30km/h of posted speed limit.
