  • We investigated the temperature uniformity in an anode-supported solid oxide fuel cell, using the open source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) toolbox, OpenFOAM. Numerical simulation was performed in three different flow paths, i.e., co-flow, counter-flow, and cross-flow paths. Gas flow in a porous electrode was calculated using effective diffusivity while considering the effect of interconnect rib. A lumped internal resistance model derived from a semi-empirical correlation was implemented for the calculation of electrochemical reaction. The result showed that the counter-flow path displayed the most uniform temperature distribution.

  • Various levels of antibacterial activity have been identified for water and ethanol extracts of corn silk, particularly against Salmonella typhimurium KCTC 2515. In general, the water extract was more effective than the ethanol extract. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for the water extract was 7.5 mg/disc for S. typhimurium KCTC 2515 and B. cereus KCTC 1092, as well as for the ethanol extract against S. typhimurium KCTC 2515 and S. typhimurium KCTC 1925. However, the MICs for the water extract were lower than those for the ethanol extract against all bacteria tested, except S. typhimurium KCTC 1925 and B. cereus KCTC 1014. The growth of the tested organisms in the synthesized broth medium was inhibited with the addition of 5-fold levels of MIC. Using sterilized milk as the model food system, we found that the lag phase for these microorganisms was extended up to 3 days at $20^{\circ}C$, but was not affected at $4^{\circ}C$. These results indicate that bacterial growth was strongly inhibited by corn silk extract at $20^{\circ}C$.

  • The effects of the agitation and aeration rates on the production of serratiopeptidase (SRP) in a 5-L fermentor (working volume 2-l) were systematically investigated using Serratia marcescens NRRL B-23112. The dissolved oxygen concentration, pH, biomass, SRP yield, and maltose utilization were all continuously measured during the course of the fermentation runs. The efficiencies of the aeration and agitation were evaluated based on the volumetric mass transfer coefficient ($K_La$). The maximum SRP production of 11,580 EU/ml with a specific SRP productivity of 78.8 EU/g/h was obtained with an agitation of 400 rpm and aeration of 0.075 vvm, which was 58% higher than the shake-flask level. The $K_La$ for the fermentation system supporting the maximum production (400 rpm, 0.075 vvm) was 11.3 $h^{-1}$. Under these fermentor optimized conditions, kinetic modeling was performed to understand the detailed course of the fermentation process. The resulting logistic and Luedeking-Piret models provided an effective description of the SRP fermentation, where the correlation coefficients for cell growth, SRP formation, and substrate consumption were 0.99, 0.94, and 0.84, respectively, revealing a good agreement between the model-predicted and experimental results. The kinetic analysis of the batch fermentation process for the production of SRP demonstrated the SRP production to be mixed growth associated.

  • This paper is concerned with an experimental investigation about tractive performance of a tracked vehicle on extremely soft soil. A tracked vehicle model with principal dimensions of $0.9\;m(L)\;{\times}\;0.75\;m(B)\;{\times}\;0.4\;m(H)$ and the weight of 167 kg was constructed with a pair of driving chain links driven by two AC-servo motors. The tracks are configured with detachable grousers with variable span. Deep seabed was simulated by means of bentonite-water mixture in a soil bin of $6.0\;m(L)\;{\times}\;3.7\;m(B)\;{\times}\;0.7\;m(H)$. Slip of vehicle and driving torque of motor were measured with respect to experimental variables; grouser span, grouser chevron angle, driving speed, drawbar-pull weight, position of center-of-gravity and weight. $L_8$ orthogonal array is adopted for DOE (Design Of Experiment). The effects of experiment variables on traction performance are evaluated.

  • As more and more people desire to live in an apartment complex with a comfortable outdoor space, many construction company became interested in outdoor design. In order to increase the use of outdoor space and create the most pleasant environment, outdoor thermal environment and comfort should be evaluated quantitatively from the design stage. This study utilized ENVI-met 3.1 model to analyze outdoor thermal environment in apartment complex, and evaluated outdoor thermal comfort in 6 points of apartment complex. The physiologically equivalent temperature(PET) was employed as a outdoor thermal index. Playground B had a poor thermal environment with the maximum PET $43^{\circ}C$ (Very hot). Because shading by building and tree didn't affect outdoor thermal environment of playground B. To design comfortable outdoor space from the view point of thermal environment, the factors influencing Mean radiant temperature(MRT) and wind speed should be considered in design stage. Since it is difficult to control outdoor thermal environment compared with indoor environment, we should take into account an assessment for outdoor thermal environment and comfort in outdoor design stage.

  • This paper proposes a speed-sensorless induction motor control system using a rotor speed compensation. To explain the proposed system, this paper describes an induction motor model in the synchronous reference frame for the vector control. The rotor flux is estimated by the rotor flux observer using the reduced-dimensional state estimator technique. The estimated rotor speed is directly obtained from the electrical frequency, the slip frequency, and the rotor speed compensation with the estimated q-axis rotor flux. The error of the rotor time constant is indirectly reflected in the rotor speed compensation using the compensation of the flux error angle. To precisely estimate the rotor flux, the actual value of the stator resistance, whose actual variation is reflected, is derived. An implementation of pulse-width modulation (PWM) pulses using an effective space vector modulation (SVM) is briefly mentioned. For fast calculation and improved performance of the proposed algorithm, all control functions are implemented in software using a digital signal processor (DSP) with its environmental circuits. Also, it is shown through experimental results that the proposed system gives good performance for the speed-sensorless induction motor control.

  • We present a new photometric study of the globular cluster NGC288 in Stromgren u, v, b, y, and H$\beta$ system. This cluster is known to have an intermediate metallicity but its color-magnitude diagram has a pure blue horizontal branch, which is a signature of metal poor stellar population. We compare our dataset with Bergbusch's (1993) in both field size and CMD to see whether different photometry system would determine the same physical parameters of a cluster. Demarque and Yi's isochrones (1996, private communication) were applied to Bergbusch's dataset, and we obtained distance modulus of (m - M) = 14.9 $\pm$ 0.2, color excess of E(B - V) = 0.03, and age of 1.5$\pm$3 Gyr. Vandenberg's (1985) isochrones for Stromgren system were also applied to Bergbusch's and our data. We find that the isochrone fits to different photometric systems give rather in consist ant solutions. The source of this discrepancy may become clear when the Demarque and Yi's isochrones for Johnson system are converted to those of Stromgren system. We note that Kurucz model atmospheres provide a useful ground for this conversion work as well as theoretical study of Stromgren characteristics of globular cluster stars.

  • A three-dimensional coupled turbulent fluid flow and solidification process were analyzed in a continuous casting process of a steel slab with Electromagnetic Brake(EMBR). A revised low-Reynolds number $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model was used to consider the turbulent effects. The enthalpy-porosity relation was employed to suppress the velocity within a mushy region. The electromagnetic field was described by Maxwell equations. Tile application of EMBR to the mold region results in the decrease of the transfer of superheat to the narrow face, the increase of temperature in free surface region and most liquid of submold region, and the higher temperature gradient near the solidifying shell. The increasing magnetic flux density effects mainly to the surface temperature of the solidifying shell of narrow face, hardly to the one of wide face. It is seen that in the presence of EMBR a thicker solidifying shell is obtained at the narrow face of the slab.

  • A vibration isolation system for a large reverberation chamber (1,228 $m^3$ and 1,000 ton) has been installed and verified. The reverberation chamber generates loud noise and induces high level of vibration while performing spacecraft acoustic reliability tests. The isolation system prevents vibration transfer from the chamber to the enclosure buildings. This paper describes design process and commissioning experiments of the system. Design criteria have been derived from rigid body model of the chamber. The stiffness of neoprene pads has been selected by employing finite element analysis of the reverberant chamber and isolation system. A total of 21 neoprene pads have been installed between the chamber and supporting Pedestals. A sand bag of 800kg was dropped on the chamber floor to measure the natural frequency of the isolation system. While 136.9 dB noise is generated in the chamber, absolute transmissibility of the isolation system has been measured. The measured natural frequency of the chamber is 10.2Hz, which is 80% of the predicted value. Overall transmissibility at working frequency range (25∼10.000 Hz) is less than -12.4 dB.

  • Nowadays an information exchange on Bn such as B2B electronic commerce is spreading. Therefore the systematic and stable management mechanism for storing the exchanged information is needed. For this goal there are many research activities for connection between XML application and relational database. But because XML data have hierarchical structures and relational database can store only flat-structured data, we need to store XML data in object-relational database that support hierarchical structure. Accordingly the modeling methodology for storing XML data in object-relational database is needed. In order to build good quality application systems, modeling is an important first step. In 1997, the OMG adopted the UML as its standard modeling language. Since industry has warmly embraced UML its popularity should become more important in the future. So a design methodology based on UML is need to develop efficiently XML applications. In this paper, we propose a unified design methodology for In applications based on object-relational database using In. To this goal, first we introduce a XML modeling methodology to design W3C XML schema using UML and second we propose data modeling methodology for object-relational database schema to store efficiently XML data in object-relational databases.
