  • Two noise reduction systems are proposed in order to overcome the geometric restriction of the reactive muffler such as an expansion chamber. First, membrane is installed as a part of a duct wall and an air cavity is covered outside membrane. Second, membrane is installed inside a duct, which gives no volume change of the duct. Structural-acoustic coupling between membrane and fluid inside the cavity and duct causes rapid impedance mismatching and thereby reflected wave. Theoretical prediction is conducted by using modal expansion approach. The results are compared with the experimental results, which show better noise reduction performance than an expansion chamber.

  • Servo performance of a disk drive is greatly affected by the mechanical resonance frequencies of the head gimbal assembly(HGA). It is important (actor to allow broader bandwidth for servo system in improving overall drive performance. In this paper, an optimal design for ODD suspension is attempted to increase resonance frequencies. It was decided that the first resonant frequency in tracking direction was higher than 5㎑. • Identification of damage of structures has recently received considerable attention in the light of maintenance and safety assessment under service loads. In buildings, the current techniques of safety assessment largely depend on partial experiments such as visual inspection, destructive and nondestructive tests which lead to overconsumption of time and cost as well as higher labor intensity. Therefore, a new trial for safety assessment is urgently needed today. In this respect, the vibration characteristics of buildings have been applied steadily to obtain a damage index of the whole building, but it cannot be established as a practical method until now. This study is aimed at investigating the application of damage identification methods using vibration characteristics of building. Numerical tests are performed on a apartment building. From the test results, it is observed that severity and location of damage can be estimated with a relatively small error by using natural frequency and mode shape data.

  • Free vibration analysis for continuous bridge under any number of vehicles is conducted in this paper. Calculation strategy for natural frequency and mode shape is proposed based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and numerical assembly method. Firstly, a half-car planar model is adopted; equations of motion and displacement functions for bridge and vehicle are established, respectively. Secondly, the undermined coefficient matrices for wheels, vehicles, intermediate support, left-end support and right-end support are derived. Then, the numerical assembly technique for conventional finite element method is adopted to construct the overall matrix of coefficients for whole system. Finally, natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes are determined based on iterative method and overall matrix solution. Numerical simulation is presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results reveal that the solutions of present method are exact ones. Natural frequencies and associate modal shapes of continuous bridge under different conditions of vehicles are investigated. The influences of vehicle parameters on natural frequencies are also demonstrated.

  • A finite-dimensional approximation technique is developed for a class of spectral systems with input and output operators which are unbounded. A corresponding bounding technique on the frequency-response error is also established for control system design. Our goal is to construct an uncertainty model including a nominal plant and its error bounds so that the results from robust linear control theory can be applied to guarantee a closed loop control performance. We demonstrate by numerical example that these techniques are applicable, with a modest computational burden, to a wide class of distributed parameter system plants.

  • In this study, the natural frequencies of the perforated square plate with a square penetration pattern are obtained as a function of ligament efficiency using the commercial finite-element analysis code ANSYS. In addition, they are used to extract the effective modulus of elasticity under an assumption of a constant Poisson's ratio. The effective modulus of elasticity of the fully perforated square plate is applied to the modal analysis of a partially perforated square plate using a homogeneous finite-element analysis model. The natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes of the homogeneous model are compared with the results of the detailed finite-element analysis model of the partially perforated square plate to check the validity of the effective modulus of elasticity. In addition, the theoretical method to calculate the natural frequencies of a partially perforated square plate with fixed edges is suggested according to the Rayleigh-Ritz method.

  • This paper discusses the techniques, procedures and the results of the ground vibration test(GVT) performed on the development aircraft and the simple procedure of FE model updating technique from the GVT results. The GVT was carried out using random excitation technique with MIMO(Multi-Input-Multi-Output) data acquistion method, and taking full advantage of poly-reference global parameter estimation technique to identify the vibration modes. In dynamic FE modeling, the aircraft was represented by beam elements and all dynamic analysis was performed using MSC/NASTRAN for this model. In updating procedure, the stiffness of the beam model was adjusted iteratively so as to get the natural frequencies and mode shapes close to the GVT results.

  • An optimization formulation of unconstrained damping treatment on beam is proposed to minimize vibration responses using a numerical search method. The fractional derivative model is combined with RUK's equivalent stiffness approach in order to represent nonlinearity of complex modulus of damping materials with frequency and temperature. Vibration responses are calculated by using the modal superposition principle, and of which design sensitivity formula with respect to damping layout is derived analytically. Plugging the sensitivity formula into optimization software, we can determine optimally damping treatment region that gives minimum forced response under a given boundary condition. A numerical example shows that the proposed method is very effective in suppressing nitration responses by means of unconstrained damping layer treatment.
