  • Due to the advance of hardware, various devices have mobility features, and many applications need the data transmission. In addition, it is essential for latest smartphones to utilize multi-cores and multi-threads because of the enhancement of Application Processor. Therefore, this paper analyzes the performance/power consumption according to transmission rate, the number of cores, and that of threads in the system that is supposed to conduct data transmission and processing simultaneously. Through the analysis, this paper provides a direction for the proper number of threads in terms of performance improvement and efficient power consumption.

  • In this paper, we analyze the interaction features using eye-tracker and the characteristics of attention concentration of children with intellectual disabilities, and present gamification elements that can be used when designing digital contents for them. For children with quadriplegic cerebral palsy, eye-trackers will increase the accessibility of digital contents. Foreground gamification can be used for selective attention concentration, background gamification and intrinsic motivation to sustain attention concentration, and foreground gamification and extrinsic motivation for mobility.

  • Communication through smartphones is creating a new paradigm of mobile communication beyond the restrictions of mobility and space. The mobile instant messengers of the smartphone, which began on the desktop environment, are providing various communication features, including multimedia contents, texts, and voice. Kindergartens and nurseries are using Websites, phones, SMS, printed materials, handwritten notifications, etc. to communicate with the parents. IsPlus was developed to facilitate the communication between the parents and the teachers, including exchanges of pictures and videos, chatting, and attendance management using smartphones. This is meaningful in that it is an early smartphone mobile messenger for educational institutions for infants and preschoolers. This study presented a new approach to the development of a mobile messenger for a specific group of users by analyzing the user environment, communication types, application planning process and interface design development using storytelling.

  • Nowadays in building construction field, workers become aged and avoid dirty, difficult, and dangerous work. Above all, a person who is in charge of beam assembling work in high and narrow space just relies on safety belt. So these workers should be highly trained. This paper deals with a new locomotion robot that can take this in charge, which will be able to provide less labor costs, less time to build a building and safer environments for workers. The geometric features of steel structure in building construction were carefully analyzed and developed a locomotion mechanism optimized to it. The robot was designed to be rugged, strong, and fast rather than having excessive mobility. Feasibility of the developed robot was verified through experiments.

  • Energy efficiency and safe mobility are the two key constituents of the future automobile. The technologies that enable these features are now heavily dependent upon information and communication technology rather than traditional auto-mechanical technology. This paper presents an exploratory project 'Smart&Green Vehicle Project' at Western Michigan University which is to improve the geographical location accuracy of vehicles and to study various applications of making such location data available. Global Positioning System (GPS), Inertial Navigation System (INS), Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) technology, and data fusion among these technologies are investigated. Testing and evaluation is done on systems which will gather vehicular positioning data during GPS signal loss. Vehicles in urban settings do not acquire accurate positioning data from GPS alone; therefore there is a need for exploration into technology that can assist GPS in urban settings. The goal of this project is to improve the accuracy of positioning data during a loss of GPS signal. Controlled experiments are performed to gather data which aided in assessing the feasibility of these technologies for use in vehicular platforms.

Skeletal Manifestations of Mucolipidosis II/III

  • Mucolipidosis (ML) is a kind of skeletal dysplasia. Characteristic X-ray findings of the bone may contribute to the early diagnosis and treatment of ML II/III. Skeletal radiographs show distinctive patterns at different ages: neonatal hyperparathyroidism, osteodystrophy (similar to chronic osteitis fibrosa cystica), and dysostosis multiplex. Patients with ML II/III show a mixture of osteodystrophic bone changes and atypical changes of dysostosis multiplex: proximal pointing of the metacarpals in the wrist, dysplastic changes in the lower third of the ilia, marked broadening of the ribs becoming oar-shaped, and beaking of the lower thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. In ML II, the osteodystrophy has clinical and radiographic features of neonatal hyperparathyroidism. In some neonatal subjects, chemical hyperparathyroidism is also demonstrated. After transient hyperparathyroidism in newborns, the progressive osteitis fibrosa cystica develops from 3-6 months of age. Patients with ML III show prominent skeletal involvement, particularly the destruction of vertebral bodies and the femoral heads. Intravenous pamidronate treatment is well tolerated, and it can produce clinical effects, with a reduction in bone pain and improvements in mobility in patients with ML III. In this review, the skeletal manifestations of ML II and III are investigated.

  • Balance can be defined as the ability to maintain the body's center of gravity within the base of support with minimal sway. Falls occur frequently in the elderly persons by the physiological change and dysfunction with age. Injuries resulting from falls include soft tissue damage and fractures of the radius, humerus, and femoral neck other consequences of falls include decreased mobility, reduced confidence, long lies (which can give rise to hypothermia, dehydration and pneumonia), and death Risk factors for falls have beau classified as intrinsic (those related to the individual) and extrinsic(those associated with environmental features), Intrinsic factors include decreased strength, visual deficits, vestibular dysfunction, and decreased vibratory sensation in the feet. Improvement of the balance related to the increased probability for fells in the elderly persons and is important for fall preventions and improvement of the living quality ef the elderly persons

Optimization of Spark Plasma Sintering Temperature Conditions for Enhancement of Thermoelectric Performance in Gas-Atomized Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 Compound

  • We fabricate fine (<$20{\mu}m$) powders of $Bi_{0.5}Sb_{1.5}Te_3$ alloys using a large-scale production method and subsequently consolidate them at temperatures of 573, 623, and 673 K using a spark plasma sintering process. The microstructure, mechanical properties, and thermoelectric properties are investigated for each sintering temperature. The microstructural features of both the powders and bulks are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, and the crystal structures are analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The grain size increases with increasing sintering temperature from 573 to 673 K. In addition, the mechanical properties increase significantly with decreasing sintering temperature owing to an increase in grain boundaries. The results indicate that the electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient ($217{\mu}V/K$) of the sample sintered at 673 K increase simultaneously owing to decreased carrier concentration and increased mobility. As a result, a high ZT value of 0.92 at 300 K is achieved. According to the results, a sintering temperature of 673 K is preferable for consolidation of fine (<$20{\mu}m$) powders.

  • This paper is the development of industrial robotic hand system and the design methods of industrial robot hand that can mimic human fingers motion. In order to overcome problems incurred during the reduction of the mobility, this study focuses on analyzing human hand structure and finger movements from an anatomical point of view. As a result, distinctive features that improve the discovered stability in constraints for range of motion in the fingers is reflected in this design concept. A 4-bar Linkage is used in robot finger structure. Lastly, there were experiments to inspect the developed robot hands performance. The developed robot hand has many potential applications and can be in many different fields.

A Study on High Voltage SiC-IGBT Device Miniaturization (고내압 SiC-IGBT 소자 소형화에 관한 연구)

  • Silicon Carbide (SiC) is the material with the wide band-gap (3.26 eV), high critical electric field (~2.3 MV/cm), and high bulk electron mobility (~900 $cm^2/Vs$). These electronic properties allow attractive features, such as high breakdown voltage, high-speed switching capability, and high temperature operation compared to Si devices. In general, device design has a significant effect on the switching and electrical characteristics. It is known that in this paper, we demonstrated that the switching performance and breakdown voltage of IGBT is dependent with doping concentration of p-base region and drift layer by using 2-D simulations. As a result, electrical characteristics of SiC-IGBT deivce is higher breakdown voltage ($V_B$= 1,600 V), lower on-resistance ($R_{on}$= 0.43 $m{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$) than Si-IGBT. Also, we determined that processing time and cost is reduced by the depth of n-drift region of IGBT was reduced.
