  • This paper presents a heuristic algorithm that a mobile robot avoids obstacles using optical flow. Using optical flow, the mobile robot can easily avoid static obstacles without a prior position information as well as moving obstacles with unknown trajectories. The mobile robot in this paper is able to recognize the locations or routes of obstacles, which can be detected by obtaining 2-dimensional optical flow information from a CCD camera. It predicts the possibilities of crash with obstacles based on the comparison between planned routes and the obstacle routes. Then it modifies its driving route if necessary. Driving acceleration and angular velocity of mobile robot are applied as controlling variables of avoidance. The corresponding simulation test is performed to verify the effectiveness of these factors. The results of simulation show that the mobile robot can reach the goal with avoiding obstacles which have variable routes and speed.

  • This paper proposes a sensor-based path planning method which utilizes fuzzy logic and neural network for obstacle avoidance of a mobile robot in uncertain environments. In order to acquire the information about the environment around the mobile robot, the ultrasonic sensors mounted on the front of mobile robot are used. The neural network, whose inputs are preprocessed by ultrasonic sensor readings, informs the mobile robot of the situation of environment in which mobile robot is at the present instant. Then, according to the situation class, the fuzzy rules are fired to make a decision on the mobile robot action. In addition, this method can be implemented real time since the number of fuzzy rules used to avoid the obstacle is small. Fuzzy rules are constructed based on the human reasoning and tuned by iterative simulations. The effective of the proposed avoidance method is verified by a series of simulations.

  • The main stream of researches on the mobile robot is planning motions of the mobile robot under nonholonomic constraints while only considering kinematic model of a mobile robot. These researches, however, assume that there is some kind of dynamic controller which can produce perfectly the same velocity that is necessary for the kinematic controller. Moreover, there are little results about the problem of integrating the nonholonomic kinematic controller and the dynamic controller for a mobile robot. Also the literature on the robustness of the controller in the presence of uncertainties or external disturbances in the dynamical model of a mobile robot is very few. Thus, in this paper, the robust adaptive controller which can achieve velocity tracking while considering not only kinematic model but also dynamic model of the mobile robot is proposed. The stability of the dynamic system will be shown through the Lyapunov method.

  • Intelligent Wearable Module is intelligent system that arises when a human is part of the feedback loop of a computational process like a certain control system. Applied system is mobile robot. This paper represents the mobile robot control system remote controlled by Intelligent Wearable Module. So far, owing to the development of internet technologies, lots of remote control methods through internet have been proposed. To control a mobile robot through internet and guide it under unknown environment, We propose a control method activated by Intelligent Wearable Module. In a proposed system, PDA acts as a user interface to communicate with notebook as a controller of the mobile robot system using TCP/IP protocol, and the notebook controls the mobile robot system. Tlle information about the direction and velocity of the mobile robot feedbacks to the PDA and the PDA send new control method produced from the fuzzy inference engine.

  • This paper presents design concepts of a reconfigurable mobile robot for both of indoor and outdoor applications. A linkage mechanism and wheel-in-motors give the proposed mobile robot various driving modes in maneuver and good adaptability to irregular surface. Since the mobile robot receives multiple sensor signals from odometers and an orientation sensor, states related to the position and the orientation of the mobile robot are optimally estimated by an extended Kalman filter. Simulations and experimental results show that the performance of dead reckoning on estimating the pose of a mobile robot can be improved remarkably by the optimal state observer.

  • This paper presents collision avoidance for mobile robots equipped with synchro-drive using curvature trajectory by the obstacle type. he new real-time obstacle avoidance method presents how to create a curvature trajectory in which dynamics of a mobile robot is considered we controlled translation and rotational velocity of the mobile robot. Using these two speeds with curvature trajectory, the mobile robot navigates to target point without collision. We consider that the robot going to curvature trajectory by obstacle size towards a goal location. The collision avoidance has been implemented and tested using pioneer2-dxe mobile robot.

  • This paper describes the path planning method in an unknown environment for an autonomous mobile robot equipped with CCD(Charge-Coupled Device) camera. The mobile robot moves along the guideline. The CCD camera is useful to detect the existence of a guideline. The wavelet transform is used to find the edge of guideline. Using wavelet transform, we can make an image processing more easily and rapidly. We make a fuzzy control rule using image data then make a decision the position and the navigation of the mobile robot. The center value that indicates the center of guideline is the input of fuzzy logic controller and the steering angle of the mobile robot is the fuzzy output. Some actual experiments for the mobile robot applied fuzzy control show that the mobile robot effectively moves to target position.

  • In this paper, a novel feasible real-time system was researched for a differential driven wheeled autonomous mobile robot so that the mobile robot can move in a smooth, safe and elegant way. Least Square Minimum Path Planning was well used for the system to generate a smooth executable path for the mobile robot, and the point-to-point tracking algorithm was presented as well as its application in arbitrary path tracking. In order to make sure the robot can run elegantly and safely, trapezoidal speed was integrated into the point-to-point path tracking algorithm. The application to guest following for the autonomous mobile robot shows its wide application of the algorithm. The novel design was successfully proved to be feasible by our experiments on our mobile robot Interactive Robot Usher (IRU) in National University of Singapore.

  • In this paper, development of an omni-directional mobile robot with rocker-bogie link structure is addressed. The overall mobile robot system consists of the robot mechanism with embedded control architecture, wireless communication with host graphic monitoring system, and the joy stick tole-controller. In the cluttered environment with various sizes of obstacles, the omni-directionality and the traversality are required for a mobile robot, so that the robot call go around or climb over the obstacles according to the size. The mobile robot mechanism developed in this paper has both of the omni-directionality and the traversality by 4 steerable driving wheels and the 2 additional passive omni-directional wheels linked with the rocker-bogie structure. The kinematic modeling for the mobile robot is described based on the well-known Sheth-Uicker convention and the instantaneous coordinate system.
