  • A mobile phone usage survey was administered to a nationwide sample of 3,617 adolescents. Major motivations of mobile phone usage were mobility/real-time connection, show off, information acquisition, entertainment, dialogue, schedule management, and advice. Maintenance of social relationship with the peer group was most important in mobile phone use. Motivations influenced mobile phone dependency : show off had the strongest influence on anxiety/paranoia followed by dialogue, entertainment, mobility/real-time connection. Without their phones, fashion-oriented adolescents showed mobile phone dependency and anxiety. Stronger dialogue and entertainment motivations were associated with weaker real time connection motivation and stronger paranoia symptoms. Mobile phone dependent adolescents had lower grades, showed lack of attention, had little dialogue with their parents and showed withdrawal from the peer group.

  • Objective: This study aimed to investigate the trajectories of mobile phone use with reference to its purposes, and to examine the effects of gender and interpersonal factors on the same in early adolescents. Methods: Latent growth modeling was used with a sample of 2,378 early adolescents from Grade 4 to 8. Data from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute were used. Results: In boys and girls, overtime, the level of mobile phone use for communicating with family decreased, while that for communicating with friends increased. Level of mobile phone use for entertainment increased across time in boys; however, in girls, it increased from Grade 4 to 6 and decreased thereafter, until Grade 8. Gender was associated with the changes of mobile phone use according to the purpose of the same. Positive parenting, negative parenting, relationships with peers, and relationships with teachers predicted changes in mobile phone use for communicating with friends. Conclusion: These findings suggest that the processes involved in the trajectories of mobile phone use in early adolescence operate differently based on the purposes of the same. Additionally, the present results show that interpersonal factors are highly associated with mobile phone use for communicating with friends.

  • Mobile phone users have diversified human factors: their channel orientations are different, and the degrees of unwillingness to communicate vary. We examined the effect of human factors on the use of mobile phone, such as the diversity of mobile phone use, the appropriateness of mobile phone, and the aversion to mobile phone as well as the interpersonal communication network through mobile phone. For our sample we surveyed college students and their family members who are older than 400. We found that the more social presence a mobile phone user gets through the mobile phone, and the more familiar to the mobile phone he/she is, (1) the more diversified is the use of mobile phone service, (2) the higher is the level of acceptance of the mobile phone as an interpersonal communication media, and (3) the lower is the level of aversion to the mobile phone. In contrast, those who have some level of aversion to the face-to-face communication, seem to form very limited interpersonal communication network through mobile phone. Their use of mobile phone is also very limited.

  • Objectives As public concern on possible harmful effects of mobile phone in children has been raised, information of epidemiological characteristics of mobile phone use in children and adolescents will be essential for public health policy. Methods Using three databases (n=21,693) collected from 2008 to 2011, we examined characteristics of mobile phone ownership and use, and socioeconomic positions (SEP) in Korean children and adolescents. Results The ownership rate and the amount of mobile phone use were higher in females than males, in higher school grades than lower grades, and at 2011 than 2008. The average age of first mobile phone ownership was shown to decrease from 12.5 years in currently high school students to 8.4 years in currently elementary school students at 2011. More than 90% of children in the 5th grade owned a mobile phone. More children owned a mobile phone in lower SEP communities than in higher SEP. Children with parents educated less than those with parents educated more were more likely to own and use mobile phone. Conclusions Considering the epidemiological characteristics of mobile phone use, precautionary measures to prevent unnecessary exposure to mobile phones are needed in children and adolescents.

The results are as follows. First, mobile phone use was different according to gender, school year and the degree of mobile phone addiction. Second, the addiction group was 12.9% of the subjects, the dependent group was 52.7%, and the non addiction group and 34.5%. Third, in the addiction group, the negative factors of peer relation quality were significantly higher than the positive factors of peer relation quality. Fourth, in the addiction group, all the factors of school life maladjustment were significantly high. Fifth, school life maladjustment was higher when the degree of mobile phone addiction was high and when the negative factors of peer relation quality were high. This suggests the necessity for education on the right use of the mobile phone and mobile phone addiction treatment program; in order to improve adolescents' peer relation quality and ease their school life maladjustment. • Objective: The possibility that smoking prevalence among junior and senior high school students may decrease with increasing mobile phone bill was reported by the mass media in Japan. We conducted a nationwide survey on adolescent smoking and mobile phone use in Japan in order to assess the hypothesis that mobile phone use has replaced smoking. Methods: A total of 70 junior high schools (response rate; 71%), and 69 high schools (90%) from all over Japan responded to 2005 survey. Students in the responding schools were asked to fill out an anonymous questionnaire about smoking behavior, mobile phone bill, and pocket money. Questionnaires were collected from 32,615 junior high school students and 48,707 senior high school students. Results: The smoking prevalence of students with high mobile phone bill was more likely to be high, and that of students who used mobile phones costing 10,000 yen and over per month was especially high. When "quitters" were defined as students who had tried smoking but were not smoking at the time of survey, the proportion of quitters decreased as the mobile phone bill increased. The proportion of students who had smoking friends increased with the increase in the mobile phone bill per month. Conclusion: The hypothesis that the decrease in smoking prevalence among Japanese adolescents that has been observed in recent years is due to a mobile phone use can be rejected.
