  • The purpose of this study is to enhance the photocatalytic properties of a mixture of low-cost titanium dioxide and calcium carbonate through a simple mixing process. To increase the photocatalytic activity, the weight ratio of titanium dioxide to calcium carbonate was selected as a variable. Photocatalytic activity was evaluated by measuring the degradation of methylene blue and NOx under ultraviolet light. The results showed that a mixture containing 60% titanium dioxide and 40% calcium carbonate exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity.

  • The need for statistical process control to check the performance of a process is becoming more important in chemical and pharmaceutical industries. This study illustrates the method to determine whether a process is in control and how to produce and interpret control charts. In the experiment, a stream of green dyed water and a stream of pure water were continuously mixed in the process. The concentration of the dye solution was measured before and after the mixer via a spectrophotometer. The in-line mixer provided benefits to the dye and water mixture but not for the stock dye solution. The control charts were analyzed, and the pre-mixer process was in control for both the stock and mixed solutions. The R and X-bar charts showed virtually all of the points within control limits, and there were no patterns in the X-bar charts to suggest nonrandom data. However, the post-mixer process was shown to be out of control. While the R charts showed variability within the control limits, the X-bar charts were out of control and showed a steady increase in values, suggesting that the data was nonrandom. This steady increase in dye concentration was due to discontinuous, non-steady state flow. To improve the experiment in the future, a mixer could be inserted into the stock dye tank. The mixer would ensure that the dye concentration of the stock solution is more uniform prior to entering the pre-mixer ow cell. Overall, this would create a better standard to judge the water and dye mixture data against as well.

  • A text-dependent speaker recognition system using a robust matching process is studied. The feature histogram of LPC cepstral coefficients for matching is used. The matching process uses mixture network with penalty scores. Using probability and shape comparison of two feature histograms, similarity values are obtained. The experiment results will be shown to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • fac-RuH(NO)(ttp) is fluxional in the range between 180 K and 303 K. The structures involved in this fluxional process are found to be a mixture of two square pyramids and a trigonal bipyramid from the low temperature NMR spectra and the line shape analysis using DNMR 3 program and the activation parameters of this process were determined by using the simulated data. The mechanism of this fluxional process is proposed to be a pathway known as Turnstile Rotation.

  • An equal-molar mixture of silver chloride (AgCl) and copper (Cu) was ground in atmosphere conditions using a planetary ball mill to investigate mechanochemical (MC) reaction for preparation of silver powders. The reaction causes the mixture of AgCl and Cu to change the composition of the mixture, such as silver (Ag) and cuprous chloride (CuCl). Through the leaching with ammonium hydroxide solution (1 mol), CuCl can be separated from MC product, so that pure Ag powders can be obtained as the final product. Moreover, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was used as the additive not only to improve dispersion of Ag pow- der during MC process, but also to control surface oxidation of Ag powders, prepared as the final product.

  • Purpose: Given the several proper models for given mixture components-process variables experimental data, we propose a strategy to find the optimal condition in which the performance of the responses is well-behaved under those models. Methods: Given the mixture experimental data with process variables, first we choose the reasonable starting models among the class of admissible product models based on the model selection criteria and then, search for the candidate models that are the subset models of the starting model by the sequential variable selection method or all possible regressions procedure. Good candidate models are screened by the evaluation of model selection criteria and checking the residual plots for the validity of the model assumption. Results: We propose a strategy to find the optimal condition in which the performance of the responses is well-behaved under those good candidate models by adopting the optimization methods developed in multiple responses surface methodology. Conclusion: A strategy is proposed to find the optimal condition in which the performance of the responses is well-behaved under those proper combined models. This strategy to find the optimal condition is illustrated with the example in this paper.

  • White LEDs are expected to be applied widely as a lighting system. To make white LED chips, one requires a mixture with silicon and a phosphor coating on a LED blue chip. The process of preparing a mixture with silicon using phosphor involves the use of discarded phosphor in the chip process. Reducing the costs of chip production depends on many factors, such as the mixture errors, exposure over time of silicon, and changes in the characteristics of blue chip. This paper reports the characteristics of a white LED chip manufactured through a reproduction process of derelict phosphor. This method was applicable to a real LED flashlight. A derelict phosphor chip showed similar results to a normal white chip for the degradation of cd 3.2[Cd] and 3.6[Cd], color temperature, 57[K] and 58[K], and maximum white wavelength 444.3[nm] and 449.8[nm]. These results are expected to make ea great contribution to cost reduction.

  • Up to the present, fabric finishing methods have been mainly employed for the application of chitosan. However, the coated chitosan acid salt is prone to be detached from the fabric during the laundering process. In order to improve the wash fastness, chitosan treated fabrics are being subjected to thermal curing. In this study, chemical crosslinking reaction by epichlorohydrin was introduced to improve the problem of the thermal curing. An improvement of the wash fastness is expected since the coated chitosan component on the fabric become insoluble by the introduction of the crosslinking. The demerit of the single chitosan treatment (inferior handle due to the excessive stiffness, etc.) was supplemented by the application of chitosan-polyurethane mixture solution. The mixture ratios were adjusted to 1 : 0, 1 : 0.25, 1 : 0.5, 1 : 1, and 1 : 2 for the chitosan/PU mixture. Physical and mechanical properties of the finished fabric specimens were measured using the Kawabata Evaluation System(KES), and hand values were calculated accordingly based on the translational formulas.
