  • Laboratory experiments were carried out to investigate the influence of pore water contamination on the treatment effect of sandy soil which was solidified by Portland cement. In the experiments, setting time of hydraulic cement that was mixed with contaminated mixing water was measured using Vicat equipment and observed the tendency of setting process with the kind of contaminants, organic or inorganic components. It was shown that organic contaminants of the mixing water affect largely on the initial setting process of hydraulic cement and inorganics, expecially heavy metals, did not affect on the initial setting process, otherwise it was appeared that setting time of the sandy soil that was contaminated with inorganic components was apparently faster than the sandy soil that did not include inorganic components even though organic concentrations was relatively low level (COD=200∼300) in the mixing water. The results of unconfined compression strength test (UCST) were well consistent with the results of Vicat equipment test.

  • A multiple box model which is suitable for the prediction of water quality in shallow lakes with active mixing is a water quality model expected to be used widely in estuary reservoir. In this study, a multiple box water quality model for estuary reservoirs (MBQER) was developed arid the applicability of the MBQER was tested by applying data obtained from Asan-estuary reservoir. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. The MBQER, dynamic water quality model, was developed to estimate 10-day water qualities of estuary reservoirs. For the proper analysis and the application of hydraulics needed to build a model, lake hydraulics was simplified by condisering only hydrological inflow and lake mixing currents. The box division in the MBQER is longitudinal one dimension for upper and middle part, and two layers for lower part of the reservoir. 2. The methods of box division for the multiple box model were ekamined and applied to Asan-estuary reservoir. For determining the number of boxes, Pe number and Pk number were used. In case of three boxes, the error by the model simplification would be estimated about 5 % Therefore, in Asan reservoir, the proper number of boxes was three. 3. The MBQER was calibrated and verified using measured data in Asan-estuary reservoir from 1986 to 1988. The Root Mean Squares(RMS) for the differences between measured data and simulated results by the MBQER were 1.10$^{\circ}$C C for water temperature, 75.8mg/1 for salinity, 0.082mg/1 for total-phosphorus showing good estimations. 4. Through the simulation of water temperature and salinity by the MBQER, the exchange flow and the mixing coefficients for the estuary lake were determined. As a result of simulation, the horizontal mixing coefficients in Asan-estuary reservoir were in the range of 1.07X 105 to 1.12X 105 cm$^2$/sec and vertical mixing coefficient was 2.90X 10-1 cm$^2$/sec.

  • In this paper, the unit processes in the typical water treatment plant, which need to be expanded because the water demand is over the existing water treatment capacity in the near future, were carefully examined to upgrade the water treatment plant. The models were installed in the fields as a distorted model based upon the hydraulic similitudes. The models having the constant discharge ratio in the unit processes between the model and the prototype were installed as two units to compare the treatment efficiencies. The capacity of the individual unit, which is a model of the prototype of $250,000m^3/day$ capacity, was $24m^3/day$. In the mixing and flocculation experiments, the mixing intensity of flocculators G was selected as the main experimental item. The optimal mixing intensities G, which are 65/sec for experimental discharge of $1m^3/hr$ and 85/sec for experimental discharge of $1.3m^3/hr$, are identified based upon the comparison the relative turbidity removal efficiencies. Also, the outlet weir loading was selected as the main experimental item in the sedimentation process. Through the continuous experiments with the main experimental items of the mixing intensity of flocculators G and the outlet loading of the weir in the sedimentation basin, about 20% upgrading compared to the existing water treatment capacity was obtained.

  • The Mixers is used for the Mixing which is the most important process in the Water&Sewage water treatment. To choose proper mixer required much career and knowledge, to check many elements which are purpose, time and condition of mixing. Thus, the design method of mixers is to be utilized for the structural design of the water & Sewage water treatment.

  • The numerous investments have been introduced to design and assess mixing zone characteristics of wastewater discharges to the ocean. Specially It strive to meet water quality standard for persistent and bio-accumulative chemical contaminants at the point of discharge through continual improvement pollution prevention measures and other voluntary measures in the developed country. The goals that of this paper are to emphasize the regulatory mixing zone is defined as an allocated impact zone where the numeric water quality criteria may be exceeded as long as acutely toxic conditions are prevent. Furthermore, mixing zones be limited to an area or volume as small as practicable that with not interfere with the designated uses or the established community of aquatic life in the segment for which the uses are designated and the shape be a simple configuration that is easy to locate in the body of water and avoids impingement on biologically important areas and the shore hugging plumes should be avoided This results should be used with caution in evaluation the mixing zone characteristics of a discharge and only in conjunction with information from the effective marine outfall design as well as for the sound harbour design. Thus the numerical investigation using CORMIX has been performed to show the regulatory mixing zone in the near and far field of the marine outfall.

  • Salt wedge into the river from the sea or fresh water flume (fresh wedge) in the ocean from the sea has density current characteristics. However, when temperature and salinity simultaneously determine the density of wedges, one of salinity and temperature can distributed in the reversed profiles against gravity, even though the density profile is stable. In this case, the double diffusive process is critical in determining mixing rate. The present work studies relative contribution of shear driven mechanical mixing component and double diffusive layering process, when warm salty denser water is introduced into the cold fresh lighter water column. Laboratory experiment releases warm salty denser water into cold fresh lighter water controlling discharge amount to achieve the steady state of density current. When longitudinal density rate becomes 15, the released amount ratio of salt and heat changes sharply and in the releasing point, vigorous mixing occurs with increase of discharged amount due to double diffusion. Double diffusion distabilizes gravitational stability and enhances the mixing rate up to $6{\times}10$ times at the lower density ratio comparing to the higher density ratio.

  • This study investigates the effect of the mixing elements on the pressure loss and mixing performance in line mixer. The high density ozone water devices mixed with gas and liquid are used in various fields such as sterilizing of group feeding facilities and water quality management at a fish farm. Due to the decrease in rainfall due to climate change, pasteurization of drinking water from ground water and surface water is extremely important. Therefore, it is intended to develop a line-mixed gas liquid mixer with a small amount of space. In this study, the effects of the number of static mixers and the types and the number of the orifice used in line mixer on the volume fraction and the pressure loss were studied by CFD simulation. The pressure drops of line mixer with orifice which curved vanes were attached to were down to more than 50 percent of that of line mixer with static mixer whereas the mixing performance of the former was similar to that of the latter.
