  • Turbulence in journal bearing operation is examined and the thermal variability is studied for isothermal, convective and adiabatic conditions on the walls under aligned and misaligned conditions. Also, the effects of a contraction ratio at the cavitation region and the mixing between re-circulating oil and inlet oil on the fluid field of oil film are included. An algorithm for the solution of the coupled turbulent Reynolds and energy equations is used to examine the effects of the various factors. Heat convection is found to play only a small role in determining friction and load under no mixing condition. However, under realistic mixing condition, the heat convection cannot be ignored. The wall temperature and heat transfer have been found to be of secondary important factors to the mixing effectiveness at the groove and the final mixture temperature.

  • Generally, OPC(ordinary portland cement) is used for grouting in Korea, and bentonite has usually been added to prevent the deposition of cement particles. The dispersion of CB(cement bentonite) grout is influenced by variable factors i.e. water to cement ratio, particle size of cement, kind of bentonite, adding volume, methods of adding, viscosity of CB grout materials and curdling time. Among variable factors, the viscosity of CB grout materials is influenced by the dispersion, and dispersion is improved as increasing the mixing speed. In this paper, described a suitable mixing speed of the High Speed Mixer in field, engineering characteristics of CB grout materials vary with the water to cement ratio and the mixing speed as well as confirming the state of dispersion.

  • A motionless mixer consists of a straight pipe or transfer tube containing the mixing elements that are used to cut, fold, twist, and re-combine the mixing fluid. The number of elements and their shape required in any application depend on the complexity of the mixing process. The objectives of this study are to develop new motionless mixers and to perform the experimental investigation of pressure drop in order to evaluate the performance of the new ones. Glycerin is used as a mixing fluid. Pressure drop is measured using a hydraulic manometer and correlations of friction factor are proposed as a function of Re. The friction factors of Sulzer SMX mixer are in qualitative good agreement with the published data. On the average, the friction factors of SSC and YNU mixers are about 36% lower than and 6% higher than that of the Sulzer one.

  • The purpose of this study is to cut down cost of production and improve the productivity of industry through quality improvement of castings and reduction of defectives by applying the experimental design to the foundry sand mixing operation done at molding department in the foundry. Among the related foundry sand mixing factors which have an effect on casting the experiment of which factors have a dominant effect on quality improvement was performed between two different levels by means of "$2^n$ type orthogonal array." The results cail be summarized as follows ; (1) The optimum conditions per each foundry sand mixing between two different levels proved to be such as $A_2$(used sand) : 24 unit (172.8kg), $B_2$(unused sand ) : 2 unit (15.0kg), $C_2$(binder) : 2.5 unit (4.4kg). $D_2$(addition agent) : 1 unit(1.4kg) and $F_1$(moisture) : 7.4%(14.6kg). (2) As a result of the application of experimental design, the fraction defective during the foundry sand mixing operation turned out to be reduced front 6.6% to 2.04%. (3) For the purpose of cost-down, It was found that the optimum level decision of foundry sand mixing for various castings is required to be made by means of experimental design.al design.

  • Various experimental data, including mixing areas, cross correlation factors, surface flow patterns on nozzle walls, and far field noise spectra, was used to draw a noise control mechanism in a supersonic jet. In the underexpanded case, mixing of the jet air with ambient air was significantly enhanced as presented before, and mixing noise was also dramatically reduced. Screech tones, in the overexpanded case, were effectively suppressed by trailing edge modifications, although mixing enhancement was not noticeable. From mixing and noise performance of nozzles with modified trailing edges, enhancing mixing through streamwise vortices seems an effective way to reduce mixing noise in the underexpanded flow regime. However, screech tones in the overespanded flow regime is well controlled or suppressed by making shock cells and/or spanwise large scale structures irregular and/or less organized by a proper selection of trailing edges. The noise field in the overexpanded flow regime was greatly affected by the symmetricity of the nozzle exit geometry. In the underexpanded flow regime, the effects of the symmetricity of the nozzle exit on mixing were negligible.

  • Data obtained from a cruise from 4~12 December, 1998 was analyzed to estimate the mixing effects of wind, surface cooling, and tide. A band denoting a mixing area with a temperature difference of less than 1$^{\circ}C$ between the sea surface and the bottom extended 40~60 km from the coast into the open sea, following 125$^{\circ}$ 30\` E in longitude. This band was divided into two areas; a well-mixed area close to the coast and a stratified region in the open sea. The mixing effect due to the wind was only 2%, yet the mixing effect due to the tides was about 68%. This indicates that surface cooling and tides were the major factors involved in the mixing mechanism on the west coast during the cooling season.

  • The purpose of this study was to review the factors that influence on the combustion experiment of oxidizing solid such as mixing ratio of oxidizing solid and combustible support content ratio of oxidizing solid, ambient temperature, maturing time, combustible support, and additives. The 30g mixing compound samples of oxidizing solid and combustible support were tested with different mixing ratios. As a result, the Infest burning time was measured when mixing ratio was 4 (oxidizing solid) : 1 (combustible support). And the burning time was decreasing as the ambient temperature and maturing time were increasing.

  • Factors affecting filtration performance were investigated in a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) coupled with a submerged microfiltration module. Special bioreactors for aerobic and anoxic phases, respectively, were specifically designed in order to differentiate tile effect of Dissolved oxygen (DO) from that of mixing intensity on membrane filterability. DO concentration as well as mixing intensity proved to have a major influence on the membrane performance regardless of the SBR phase. A higher DO concentration resulted in a slower rise in TMP, corresponding to less membrane fouling.
