  • Objectives: This study aims to identify whether ventilation conditions and their effectiveness can be significantly improved in an experimental chamber by increasing the mixing factor (K-Factor). Methods: In a chamber with a volume of $1m^3$, air velocity was measured at six different points with four roof fans in the upper part of the chamber being operated in order. The impact of the ventilation conditions was analyzed when the flow rates were increasing and the first inlet of the chamber was either open or closed. Smoke patterns were also observed at four corner points where ventilation was limited. Kruskal Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were performed to compare air velocities measured in the chamber. Results: The air velocities measured at only the third point increased significantly from $0.03{\pm}0.03m/s$ (door open) and $0.05{\pm}0.06m/s$ (door closed) with two fans, $0.08{\pm}0.08m/s$ with three fans, and $0.09{\pm}0.09m/s$ with four fans operating (p<0.05). However, air velocities at the four corner points did not significantly increase. Smoke patters also showed that the open inlet of the chamber had no effect on improvement of ventilation conditions and effectiveness. Conclusions: In this study, the air velocities at six points in the chamber did not significantly increase despite the increase in the mixing factor and flow rates of ventilation in the controlled environment. Therefore, the inflow of outdoor air throughout an open inlet and installation of a forced ventilation system can potentially increase the indoor air velocity and improve ventilation condition without an increase in the mixing factor.

  • Generally, load conditions of machine or structure in fatigue destruction is occurred not under single load conditions but under mixed load conditions. However, the experiment under mixing mode is insufficient because of no having test standard to the behavior of crack under mixing mode and variety of test methods, and many tests are required. In this paper measured crack direction path by created figure capture system when a experiment. Also, we studied by comparison the behavior of crack giving the change of stress ratio and inserting beach mark. Through the test under mixing mode, advancing path of crack is indicated that advancing inclined angle ${\Theta}$ (direction of specimen length) has increased depending on the increase of mixed mode impaction. It is indicated that according to the increase of mixed mode loading condition impaction under mixing mode, advancing speed of crack gets slow. Also, we found that inner crack(cross section of specimen) is progressed more rapidly than outer crack based on data through beach mark.

  • The present study was carried out to develop crosslinking of $\beta$-cyclodextrin ($\beta$-CD) using adipic acid, and to determine the optimum conditions of different factors ($\beta$-CD concentration, mixing temperature, mixing time and mixing speed) on cholesterol reduction from homogenized milk. Crosslinked $\beta$-CD was prepared with adipic acid. When the milk was treated with different conditions, the cholesterol removal rate was in the range of 92.1 to 93.1% with 1% $\beta$-CD addition, which were not significantly different among treatments. After cholesterol removal from milk, the used crosslinked $\beta$-CD was washed for cholesterol dissociation and reused. For recycling study, the cholesterol removal rate in the first trial was 92.5%, which was mostly same as that using new crosslinked $\beta$-CD. With repeated ten time trials using same sample, 81.4% of cholesterol was removed from milk. Therefore, the present study indicated that the optimum conditions for cholesterol removal using crosslinked $\beta$-CD were 1% $\beta$-CD addition and 10 min mixing with 400 rpm speed at 5$^{\circ}C$ with over 90% cholesterol removal. In addition, crosslinked $\beta$-CD made by adipic acid resulted in the effective recycling efficiency.

  • This study was designed to develop crosslinking of $\beta$-cyclodextrin ($\beta$-CD), and determine the optimum conditions of different factors (mixing time, mixing temperature, and mixing speed) on cholesterol reduction from milk. Crosslinked $\beta$-CD was prepared with epichlorohydrin. When milk was treated with different conditions, the cholesterol removal rate was in the range of 79.4 to 83.3% with 1 % crosslinked $\beta$-CD addition, which were not significantly different among treatments. After cholesterol removal from milk, the used crosslinked $\beta$-CD was washed for cholesterol dissociation and reused. For recycling study, the cholesterol removal rate in first trial was 81.8%, which was mostly same as that using new crosslinked $\beta$-CD. With five trials repeatedly using the same sample, the mean cholesterol removal rate was 81.2%. The present study indicated that the optimum conditions on cholesterol removal using crosslinked $\beta$-CD were 10 min mixing with 400 rpm speed at $5^{\circ}C$ with about 80% cholesterol removal. In addition, crosslinked $\beta$-CD resulted in the effective recycling efficiency almost 100%.

  • This study aimed to develop reference materials (RMs) that are chemically stable and can simulate the flow characteristics of cement paste. To this end, the candidate components of RMs were selected considering the currently required properties of RMs. Limestone, slag, silica, and kaolin were selected as substitutes for cement, while glycerol and corn syrup were selected as matrix fluids. Moreover, distilled water was used for mixing. To select the combinations of materials that meet all the required properties of RMs, flow characteristics were first analyzed. The results revealed that silica and kaolin exhibited bilateral nonlinearity. When an analysis was conducted over time, slag exhibited chemical reactions, including strength development. Moreover, fungi were observed in all mixtures with corn syrup. On the other hand, the combination of limestone, glycerol, and water exhibited a performance that met all the required properties of RMs. Thus, limestone, glycerol, and water were selected as the components of the RMs. When the influence of each component of the RMs on flow characteristics was analyzed, it was found that limestone affects the yield value, while the ratio of water and glycerol affects the plastic viscosity. Based on this, it was possible to select the mixing ratios for the RMs that can simulate the flow characteristics of cement paste under each mixing ratio. This relationship was established as an equation, which was verified under various mixing ratios. Finally, when the flow characteristics were analyzed under various temperature conditions, cement paste and the RMs exhibited similar tendencies in terms of flow characteristics. This indicated that the combinations of the selected materials could be used as RMs that can simulate the flow characteristics of cement paste with constant quality under various mixing ratio conditions and construction environment conditions.

  • The existing experimental data related to the turbulent mixing factor in rod arrays is examined and a new definition of the turbulent mixing factor is introduced to take into account the turbulent mixing of fluids with various Prandtl numbers. The new definition of the mixing factor is based on the eddy diffusivity of energy. With this definition of the mixing factor, it was found that the geometrical parameter, ${\delta}_{ij}/D_h$ correlates the turbulent mixing data better than Sid, which has been used frequently in existing correlations. Based on the experimental data for a highly turbulent condition in square rod arrays, a correlation describing turbulent mixing dependent on the parameter ${\delta}_{ij}/D_h$ has been developed. The correlation is insensitive to the Re number and it takes into account the effect of the turbulent Prandtl number. The proposed correlation predicts a reasonable mixing even at a lower S/d ratio.

  • The quality of chaotic mixing in three-dimensional micro channel flow has been numerically studied using Fractional-step method (FSM) and particle tracking techniques such as $Poincar{\acute{e}}$ section and Lyapunov exponents. The flow was driven by pressure distribution and the chaotic mixing was generated by applying alternating current to electrodes embedded on the bottom wall at a first half period and on the top wall at a second half period. The equations governing the velocity and concentration distributions were solved using FSM based on Finite Volume approach. Results showed that the mixing quality depended significantly on the modulation period. The modulation period for the best mixing performance was determined based on the mixing index for various initial conditions of concentration distribution. The optimal values of modulation period obtained by the particle tracking techniques were compared with those from the solution of concentration distribution equation using FSM and CFX software and the comparison showed their good match.

  • The results of study on the active control of naturally occurring combustion oscillations with a single dominant frequency in an atmospheric dump combustor are presented. Control was achieved by an oscillatory infection of secondary fuel at the dump plane. A high speed solenoid valve with a maximum frequency of 250Hz was used as the actuator and a sound level meter, located at the combustor exit, measured the pressure fluctuations which served as the feedback signal for the control loop. Instability characteristics were mapped over a range of mean mixing section velocities from 6.7 m/s-9.3 m/s and with three mixing conditions. Different fuel/air mixing conditions were investigated by introducing varying percentages of primary fuel at two locations, one at the entrance to the mixing section and one 6 mixing tube diameters upstream of the dump plane. Control studies were conducted at a mean velocity of 9.3 m/s, with an air temperature of $415^{\circ}C$, and from flame blowout to the stoichiometric condition.

  • The authors have reported significant reductions in particulate emissions of diesel engines by generating strong turbulence during the combustion process. This study aims to identify optimum conditions of turbulent mixing for effective soot reduction during combustion. The experiments were conducted with a constant volume combustion vessel equipped with abet-generating cell, in which a small amount of fuel is injected during the combustion of the main spray. The jet of burned gas from the cell impinges the main flame, causing changes In the mixing of fuel and air. Observation was made for a variety combinations of distances between spray nozzle and Jet orifice at different directions of impingement. It Is shown that compared with the case without Jet flame soot decreases when the jet impinges. When the jet is very close to the flame, it penetrates the soot cloud and causes little mixing. There were no apparent differences in the combustion duration when the direction of impingement was varied, although the mechanisms of soot reduction seemed different. An analysis of local turbulent flews with PIV (Particle image Velocimetry) showed the relationship between the scale of the turbulence and the size of the soot cloud.

  • In this paper, in order to achieve slim and light liquid crystal display, we examine the optical conditions that can obtain uniform light with higher optical efficiency over whole light guide plate (LGP) through simulation. Furthermore, to overcome the issues of hot spot in front of red, green, and blue light emitting diodes (RGB LEDs) source and non-uniform color mixing, we propose four shaped color mixing bars tied up with the LGP and check the optical characteristics of the LGP with them by simulation. Consequently, we could know the optical conditions of improving optical efficiency and optical uniformity in the LGP through the optical design. Also we confirmed that the issues of the hot spot and non-uniform color mixing in edge type LED could be solved by using the ${\bigwedge}$-shaped window color mixing bar.
