  • This study confirmed the radioprotective effects of a mixed extracts of Hottuynia, Perilla Frutescens, and Camellia Sinnensis as natural radioprotectors on the prostate, small intestine, and liver of SD rats. It is known that Hottuynia, Perilla Frutescens, and Camellia Sinnensis have antioxidant effects on the prostate, small intestine, and liver, respectively. In this study, SD rats were irradiated with 8 Gy of gamma rays to confirm the radioprotective effects of a mixed extracts of Hottuynia, Perilla Frutescens, and Camellia Sinnensis. After radiation irradiation, histological analysis of the prostate, small intestine, and liver was performed. After radiation irradiation, histological analysis of the prostate, small intestine, and liver was performed. In the case of the prostate, the HPC+IR Group had less prostate damage and better recovery due to radiation compared to the IR Group. It was confirmed that the prostate size of the HPC+IR Group was 11.48%p and 24.54%p higher than the IR Group on 1st and 7th days. In the case of the small intestine, the HPC+IR Group had less radiation-induced small intestinal damage and recovery was better than the IR Group. The length of small intestine villus in the HPC+IR Group was confirmed to be 23.73%p and 24.27%p higher than the IR Group on the 1st and 7th days. In the case of the liver, the HPC+IR Group had less liver damage due to radiation and had better recovery than the IR Group. This was confirmed through the hepatic portal vein and surrounding cells. The results of this study are considered to be used as basic data for research on natural radiation protection using mixed extracts.

  • Background: To evaluate the changes in the radiation dose and temperature distribution on irradiated egg albumin and nanoparticle ($Fe_3O_4$) powder mixed egg albumin. Methods: A new type of phantom was designed by fabricating a $30{\times}30{\times}30cm$ acryl square inside a $3{\times}3{\times}3cm$ small square and dividing it into two parts. In the control group, only egg albumin was irradiated, and in the test group, 25 nm 20 mg/cc, 25 nm 40 mg/cc, and 1 um 40mg/cc nanoparticles with egg albumin were irradiated. The radiation isodose distributions and temperature changes were then observed. Results: No significant changes were observed in the radiation dose and temperature distribution. Conclusion: The nanoparticles were considered not to have had any effect on the radiation dose and temperature distribution under the experimental conditions. Further studies can be conducted based on the changes in the mixture material.

  • I present here one approach to general relativistic radiation hydrodynamics. It is based on covariant tensor conservation equations and considers only the frequency-integrated total energy and momentum exchange between matter and the radiation field. It is also a mixed-frame formalism in the sense that, the interaction between radiation and matter is described with quantities in the comoving frame in which the interaction is often symmetric in angle while the radiation energy and momentum equations are expressed in the fixed frame quantities in which the derivatives are simpler. Hence, this approach is intuitive enough to be applied straightforwardly to any spacetime or coordinate. A few examples are provided along with caveats in this formalism.

  • Silicon PIN diode radiation sensors and CMOS readout circuits were designed and fabricated in this study. The PIN diodes were fabricated using a 380-${\mu}m$-thick 4-inch n+ Si (111) wafer containing a $2-k{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ n- thin epitaxial layer. CMOS readout circuits employed the driving and signal processes in a radiation sensor were mixed with digital logic and analog input circuits. The primary functions of readout circuits are amplification of sensor signals and the generation of the alarm signals when radiation events occur. The radiation sensors and CMOS readout circuits were fabricated in the Institute of Semiconductor Fusion Technology (ISFT) semiconductor fabrication facilities located in Kyungpook National University. The performance of the readout circuit combined with the Si PIN diode sensor was demonstrated.

  • Alnine pellets were installed in a nuclear power plant for one or two operation cycles and measured by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometers for dosimetry. Dose and "x/y ratio", i.e., satellite peak over main center peak ratio, were measured for the returned alanine dosimeters from the nuclear power plant and compared to the values of reference alanine dosimeters exposed only to gamma rays. The variation of the x/y ratio change depended on the population of radicals from each radiation component with different LET. The gamma dose in a mixed radiation field was estimated by an additive gamma ray irradiation experiment and the measured dose rate at specified locations in the containment building.

  • Photostimulated luminescence (PSL) and thermoluminescence (TL) analyses were applied to identify the cookie molds mixed with 2 mg of 10 kGy-irradiated minerals according to cookie processing methods and sonication time (0~60 min) for mineral separation. PSL analysis showed that photon counts of cookies, dried or baked, ranged intermediate levels between the lower and upper threshold (700~5,000 counts/60 s), thereby showing its unsuitablility for screening of irradiated cookie. The TL glow curve intensities, measured according to mineral separation time (5, 10, 20, 40 and 60 mins) from the cookies using a sonicator, were high enough to identify irradiation status and significantly increased with the time in dried cookies. Those of baked cookies, however, were relatively low and not linearly increased with the time, but still possible to identify them (p<0.05).

  • Objectives: To compare the outcomes of treatment with a focus on the effectiveness of the two primary techniques of radiation used for treating parotid gland malignancies. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis of 70 patients with parotid gland cancer treated between 1981-1997. Radiation was delivered through an ipsilateral field of high energy electron and photon in 37 patients(52.9%). Two wedge paired photon was used to treat in 33 patients(47.1%). The median dose was 60 Gy, typically delivered at 1.8-2.0Gy per fraction. The median follow-up times for surviving patients was 60 months. Results: The overall and disease free 5 year survival rates were 71.6% and 69.5%, respectively. Wedge paired photon and photon-electron treatment disease tree 5 year survival rates were 61.1% and 80.5%, respectively. Overall local failure rate was 18.6%. Local failure rate of wedge paired photon technique was higher than that of mixed beam technique. Late complication rate was 37.1%, but most of them were mild grade. Conclusion: Techniques of radiation were associated with local control. The technique of using an ipsilateral field encompassing the parotid bed and treated with high energy electrons often mixed photons was effective with minimal severe late toxicity. To irradiate deep sited tumors, we consider 3-D conformal treatment plan for well encompassing the target volume.

  • Radiation-induced side effects on normal tissue are determined largely by the capacity of cells to repair radiation-induced DNA damage. X-ray repair cross-complementing group 1 (XRCC1) plays an important role in the repair of DNA single-strand breaks. Studies have shown conflicting results regarding the association between XRCC1 gene polymorphisms (Arg399Gln, Arg194Trp, -77T>C and Arg280His) and radiation-induced side effects in patients undergoing whole breast radiotherapy. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to determine the predictive value of XRCC1 gene polymorphisms in this regard. Analysis of the 11 eligible studies comprising 2,199 cases showed that carriers of the XRCC1 399 Gln allele had a higher risk of radiation-induced toxicity than those with the 399 ArgArg genotype in studies based on high-quality genotyping methods [Gln vs. ArgArg: OR, 1.85; 95% CI, 1.20-2.86] or in studies with mixed treatment regimens of radiotherapy alone and in combination with chemotherapy [Gln vs. ArgArg: OR, 1.60; 95% CI, 1.09-2.23]. The XRCC1 Arg399Gln variant allele was associated with mixed acute and late adverse reactions when studies on late toxicity only were excluded [Gln allele vs. Arg allele: OR, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.00-1.49]. In contrast, the XRCC1 Arg280His variant allele was protective against radiation-induced toxicity in studies including patients treated by radiotherapy alone [His allele vs. Arg allele: OR, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.35-0.96]. Our results suggest that XRCC1 399Gln and XRCC1 280Arg may be independent predictors of radiation-induced toxicity in post-surgical breast cancer patients, and the selection of genotyping method is an important factor in determining risk factors. No evidence for any predictive value of XRCC1 Arg194Trp and XRCC1 -77T>C was found. So, larger and well-designed studies might be required to further evaluate the predictive value of XRCC1 gene variation on radiation-induced side effects in patients undergoing whole breast radiotherapy.

  • For malignant neoplasms of salivary tissues. two of the better determinants of progosis are histologic classification and size of the neoplasm. Proper management of these tumors requires an accurate diagnosis by the pathologist and correct interpretation by the surgeon. Malignant mixed tumors account for between 3 and 13 precent of all cancers of the salivary glands and 2 percent of all tumors in these locations. The typical history of these tumors is that of slowly growing mass demonstrating a sudden increase in growth. The duration of onset of the tumor mass and the diagnosis of malignancy has been demonstrated to be 10 to 18 years. The risk of malignat transformation of a benign mixed tumor increases with the duration of the tumor. We analyzed retrospectively 13 cases of malignant mixed tumor who visited from Jan. 1985 to Dec. 1992. Mean age of the patients was 56.5 years. The origin of tumors were parotid gland 7 cases, submandibular gland 2 cases, and minor salivary gland 4 cases(palate 3 cases, tonsil pillar 1 case). According to the criteria of the AJCC on staging, stage I was 1 case, stage II 1 case, stage III 2 cases, and stage IV 9 cases. Histopathologically, carcinma ex pleomorphic adenoma were 12 cases and the true malignant mixed tumor was 1 case. The major treatment modalities were curative surgery, and radiation therapy followed. In conclusion, aggressive therapy of combined surgery and postoperative radiation therapy is required for these lesions, and patients with known or suspected benign tumor should be encouraged to undergo surgery early on in their disease to avoid malignant degeneration at a later dete.

  • In this paper, we measured the radiation dose of a fuel handling machine of the CANDU type Wolsong nuclear reactor directly during operation, in spite of the high radiation level. In this paper we will describe the sensor development, measurement techniques, and results of our study. For this study, we used specially developed semiconductor sensors and matching dosimetry techniques for the mixed radiation field. MOSFET dosimeters with a thin oxide, that are tuned to a high dose, were used to measure the ionizing radiation dose. Silicon diode dosimeters with an optimum area to thickness ratio were used for the radiation damage measurements. The sensors are able to distinguish neutrons from gamma/X-rays. To measure the radiation dose, electronic sensor modules were installed on two locations of the fuel handling machine. The measurements were performed throughout one reactor maintenance cycle. The resultant annual cumulative dose of gamma/X-rays on the two spots of the fuel handling machine were 18.47 Mrad and 76.50 Mrad, and those of the neutrons were 17.51 krad and 60.67 krad. The measured radiation level is high enough to degrade certain cable insulation materials that may result in electrical insulation failure.
