  • In this paper, a hybrid technique is presented. First, the isochromatic fringe data of a given set of points are calculated by the finite element method and are used as input data in complex variable formulations. Then the numerical model of the specimen with a central inclined crack is transformed from the physical plane to the complex plane by conformal mapping. The stress field is analyzed and the mixed-mode stress intensity factors are calculated for this complex plane. The stress intensity factors are calculated by the finite element method as well as by a theoretical method and compared with each other. In order to conveniently compare these values with each other, both actual and regenerated photoelastic fringe patterns are multiplied by a factor of two and sharpened by digital image processing.

  • A long-term resuspension of small particles, called persistent turbidity, is one of the most important water quality concerns in the dam reservoirs system located in North Han River. Persistent turbidity may incur aesthetic nuisance and harmful effect on the ecosystem health, in addition to elevated water treatment costs for the drinking water supply to the Seoul metropolitan area. These sufferings have been more intensified as the strength and frequency of rainfall events increase by climate change in the basin. This study was to analyze the effect of an extreme turbidity flow event that occurred in 2006 on the serial reservoirs system (Soyang-Uiam-Cheongpyung-Paldang) in North Han River. The CE-QUAL-W2 model was set up and calibrated for the river and reservoirs system using the field data obtained in 2006 and 2007. The results showed that Soyang Reservoir released turbid water, which was classified as the TSS concentration is greater than 25 mg/L, for 334 days with peak TSS of 264.1 mg/L after the extreme flood event (592.7 mm) occurred between July 10 and 18 of 2006. The turbid water departed from Soyang Reservoir reached at the most downstream Paldang Reservoir after about 20 days and sustained for 41 days, which was validated with water treatment plant data. Since the released water from Soyang Reservoir had low water temperature and high TSS, an underflow formed in the downstream reservoirs and vertically mixed at Paldang Reservoir due to dilution by the sufficient inflow from South Han River.

  • Background: As the number of households raising companion dogs increases, the pet genetic analysis market also continues to grow. However, most studies have focused on specific purposes or native breeds. This study aimed to collect genomic data through single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chip analysis of companion dogs in South Korea and perform genetic diversity analysis and SNP annotation. Methods: We collected samples from 95 dogs belonging to 26 breeds, including mixed breeds, in South Korea. The SNP genotypes were obtained for each sample using an AxiomTM Canine HD Array. Quality control (QC) was performed to enhance the accuracy of the analysis. A genetic diversity analysis was performed for each SNP. Results: QC initially selected SNPs, and after excluding non-diverse ones, 621,672 SNPs were identified. Genetic diversity analysis revealed minor allele frequencies, polymorphism information content, expected heterozygosity, and observed heterozygosity values of 0.220, 0.244, 0.301, and 0.261, respectively. The SNP annotation indicated that most variations had an uncertain or minimal impact on gene function. However, approximately 16,000 non-synonymous SNPs (nsSNPs) have been found to significantly alter gene function or affect exons by changing translated amino acids. Conclusions: This study obtained data on SNP genetic diversity and functional SNPs in companion dogs raised in South Korea. The results suggest that establishing an SNP set for individual identification could enable a gene-based registration system. Furthermore, identifying and researching nsSNPs related to behavior and diseases could improve dog care and prevent abandonment.

  • Solvatochromic comparison methods were applied to determine Taft's solvent parameters, ${\pi}^{\ast}$(solvent polarity-polarizability), ${\alpha}$(solvent hydrogen bond donor acidity) and ${\beta}$ (solvent hydrogen bond acceptor basicity) for MeOH-MeCN solvent mixtures. Swain's solvent parameters A(anion solvation scale) and B(cation solvation scale) were also determined by least square fitting of kinetic data in the same binary solvent mixtures. It was found that: (i)${\beta}$ depends on the basicity of the solvent and increases with the MeOH content owing to the increase in polymeric structure of methanol; (ii) ${\pi}^{\ast}$depends on the dipole moment of the solvent and increases with the MeCN content of the solvent; (iii) ${\alpha}$ increases rapidly with the MeOH content as the hydrogen bond donor acidity of the solvent mixtures increases. Taft's reaction constants a and s and Swain's reaction constants a and b were determined for the reactions reported from our laboratory previously using solvent parameters determined in this work. No meaningful inter-relationship was found between the two set of reaction parameters, but a good linear correlation was found between the ratios a/s and a/b. Solvent effect on the reaction mechanism, substituent effect and leaving group ability were examined in the light of these reaction constants ratios.

  • The buffer capacity of southern Korean waters in summer was quantified using data set of temperature, salinity, dissolved inorganic carbon, total alkalinity obtained from August 2020 cruise. The geographical distribution and variability of six buffer factors, which amended the existing Revelle factor, are discussed their relationship with the hydrological parameters of temperature and salinity. The calculated results of six buffer factors showed the spatial variations according to the distributions of various water masses. The buffer capacity was low in the East Sea Surface Mixed Water (ESMW) and South Sea Surface Mixed Water (SSMW) where upwelling occurred, and showed an intermediate value in the Yellow Sea Surface Water (YSSW). In addition, the buffer capacity increased in the order of high temperature Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) and Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW). This means that the Changjiang discharge water in summer strengthens the buffer capacity of the study area. The highest buffer capacity of CDW is due to its relatively higher temperature and biological productivity, and a summer stratification. Temperature showed a good positive correlation (R2=0.79) with buffer capacity in all water masses, whereas salinity exhibited a poor negative correlation (R2=0.30). High temperature strengthens buffer capacity through thermodynamic processes such as gas exchange and distribution of carbonate system species. In the case of salinity, the relationship with buffer capacity is reversed because salinity of the study area is not controlled by precipitation or evaporation but by a local freshwater input and mixing with upwelled water.

  • The sensory characteristics of nine commercially distilled soju samples were determined by sensory descriptive analysis. Eight aroma attributes, as well as four flavor/taste attributes, and six mouth-feel related attributes were evaluated by 9 judges. The descriptive data set was initially analyzed for a significant overall product effect by employing a three-way mixed model analysis of variance (judges, samples, and replications) as well as two-way interactions, with judges treated as random. In addition, correlations between mean attribute ratings were calculated, and a principal component analysis (PCA) of the mean attribute ratings employing the covariance matrix was conducted. Based on the PCA, distilled soju samples were primarily separated along the first principal component, which accounted for 66% of the total variance between the samples, with high intensities of 'alcohol taste' and 'alcohol aroma' versus 'yeast aroma'. The second principal component accounted for 14% of the total variance. Soju containing high alcohol showed stronger intensities of 'bitterness', 'alcohol taste', 'alcohol aroma', as well as all mouth-feel attributes.

  • Background: Despite mixed survival data, the utilization of contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) for the prevention of a contralateral breast cancer (CBC) has increased significantly over the last 15 years, especially among women less than 40. We set out to look at our own experience with CPM, focusing on outcomes in women less than 40, the sub-population with the highest cumulative lifetime risk of developing CBC. With an extended follow-up, we hoped to demonstrate differences in the long-term disease free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) among groups who underwent the procedure (CPM) versus those that did not (NCPM). Materials and Methods: We performed a retrospective review of all breast cancer patients less than age 40 diagnosed at Mount Sinai Medical Center between January 1, 1980 and December 31, 2010 (n=481). Among these patients, 42 were identified as having undergone CPM, while 195 were confirmed as being CPM-free during the observation period. A univariate and multivariate analyses were performed. Results: The CPM group had a significantly higher percentage of patients who were diagnosed between 2000 and 2010 (95.2% vs 40%, p=0.0001). The CPM group had significantly smaller tumors (0-2cm.: 41.7% vs 24.8%, p=0.04). Among the entire group of patients, the overall five- and 10-year DFS were 81.3% and 73.3%, respectively. CPM was significantly associated [HR 2.35 (1.02, 5.41); p=0.046] with 10-year OS, although a similar effect was not observed for five-year OS. Conclusions: We found that CPM has increased dramatically over the last 15 years, especially among white women with locally advanced disease. In patients less than 40, who are thought to be at greatest cumulative risk of secondary breast cancer, CPM provided an OS advantage, regardless of genetics, tumor or patient characteristics, and which was only seen after 10 years of follow-up.

  • The concept of a hyperpresmtation, as an extension of a hypermedia, is the presentation in which time-varying multimedia presentations are dynamically linked together and a hyperlink's context can be changed over time at any time during a continuous presentation. Problems caused by integrating the hyperpresentation into an existing multimedia system which handles a sequential presentation only are, how to describe the hyperprcsentation, how to set up a hyperlink on a continuous media, and how to check the consistency of the synchronized presentations. In this paper. a new synchronization description method for the hyperpresentation and a method for setting a hyper link on a continuous media during" presentation are proposed after havin!; SHrvey of existing methods, The proposed method deals with only the DC value in a stream ut a DCT based compressed data for checking a condition of te link. Finally, the method for checking the consistency of mixed presentations before actual play of the hnlerpresentation is described. Proposed methods are implemented on MuX(Multimedia IO Server) where a sample scenario is tested.

  • The performance of existing CDMA-type multiple access data transmission systems is limited by interferences due to adverse mobile communication channel characteristics. Among them, the multi-user interference becomes one of the major performance degradation factors because the signal-to-signal orthogonality can be easily perturbed when numerous user signals are distorted by multipath fading channels and mixed together. In order to enhance the performance of CDMA-type systems by suppressing the multi-user interference, we have adopted chip-based cyclic prefix insertion along with adaptive one-tap DFE equalization into MC-DS-CDMA, which is known for its robustness in the frequency selective multipath fading channel environment. In order to assess the performance of the proposed system, a set of computer simulations is performed in the reverse link in which each user signal undergoes different multipath Rayleigh fading. The results show us a superior performance of our system over other CDMA systems in terms of SNR to BER measurements.
