  • In DC Power Distribution System(DC PDS), a bus voltage instability is occurred by multiple parallel loads. The Voltage Bus Conditioner(VBC) is used to mitigate the DC bus voltage transient. An adaptive controller of the VBC is designed and the simulation result of the controller is verified by PSIM simulation package for the proposed control technique.

  • With the emergence of new ICT technologies, information security threats are becoming more advanced, intelligent, and diverse. Even though the awareness of the importance of information security increases, the information security budget is not enough because of the lack of effectiveness measurement of the information security investment. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize the information security investment in each business environment to minimize the cost of operating the information security countermeasures and mitigate the damages occurred from the information security breaches. In this paper, using genetic algorithms we propose an investment optimization model for information security countermeasures with the limited budget. The optimal information security countermeasures were derived based on the actual information security investment status of SMEs. The optimal solution supports the decision on the appropriate investment level for each information security countermeasures.

  • This study provides a background on the growth of Indian automobile industry under different regulatory regimes. It is observed that the international joint ventures have played a key role in the growth of the sector. The study further examines the motives for forming IJVs in the auto component sector and also identifies the criteria for choosing the joint venture partner to mitigate conflicts. These two specific attributes form the core towards transfer of technology, promoting innovation and also act as a catalyst for adopting and choosing appropriate technology. The study brings out the relationship between motives, partner selection criteria and performance of the IJVs. Results indicate that firms gave maximum importance to technological skills, quality control measures and proprietary knowledge in selecting IJV partners. It is also observed that the motives affect the partner selection criteria in terms of skill and resources needed from the partner.

  • In this paper, we consider the femto users and their mutual interference as graph elements, nodes and weighted edges, respectively. The total bandwidth is divided into a number of resource blocks (RBs) and these are assigned to the femto user equipment (FUEs) using a graph coloring algorithm. In addition, resources blocks are assigned to the femto users to avoid inter-cell interference. The proposed scheme is compared with the traditional scheduling schemes in terms of throughput and fairness and performance improvement is achieved by exploiting the graph coloring scheme.

  • Gait-based classification has gained much interest as a possible authentication method because it incorporate an intrinsic personal signature that is difficult to mimic. The study investigates machine learning techniques to mitigate the natural variations in gait among different subjects. We incorporated several machine learning algorithms into this study using the data mining package called Waikato Environment for Knowledge Analysis (WEKA). WEKA's convenient interface enabled us to apply various sets of machine learning algorithms to understand whether each algorithm can capture certain distinctive gait features. First, we defined 24 gait features by analyzing three-axis acceleration data, and then selectively used them for distinguishing subjects 10 years of age or younger from those aged 20 to 40. We also applied a machine learning voting scheme to improve the accuracy of the classification. The classification accuracy of the proposed system was about 81% on average.

  • Detention pond has an important role in peak flow reduction to mitigate flood damage. Design of detention pond is accomplished through the preliminary stage, planning stage, and design stage in general. New development projects produce increased peak flow and flow amounts. In this case it is necessary to design the detention pond easily and simply. The simple procedure of detention pond design is proposed in this study. The relevant variables are peak flow ratio ($\alpha$) for the before and after development, and storage ratio which is ratio of storage volume to flow amounts. Simplified method for the detention pond design with runoff reduction is easily used for practical purposes.

  • Efficiency and limitations of HAZUS-MH, a GIS based systematic and informative system developed by FEMA and NIBS for natural hazard loss estimations, are discussed by means of a pilot study in the Korean Peninsular. Gyeongsang-do has been selected for the test after careful reviews of previous studies including historical and modern seismicity in the peninsular. A ShakeMap for the selected scenario earthquake with magnitude 6.7 in Gyeongju area is prepared. Then, any losses due to the scenario event have been estimated using HAZUS. Results of the pilot test show that the study area may experience significant physical, economic and social damages. Detailed study in the future will provide efficient and crucial information to the decision makers and emergency agents to mitigate any disaster posed by natural hazards.

  • In recent years, the natural damage associated with flood disaster has been dramatically increased. However, there is no rational method which reflects urban characteristics to estimate the regional safety assessment for flood disaster. The purpose of this study is to develop the regional safety assesment model for urban flood. Flood risk and reduction assesment were estimated by using the linear sum of the Z score of the assessment factors and the weight value of each factor from the expert survey data. And then the regional safety assessment was estimated by subtracting reduction factor value from risk factor value. GIS tool was used to estimate the factor assesment and integrated regional safety. This study can be used to determine the priority of flood protection project, execute the flood insurance and establish the urban plans and the flood mitigate plan.

  • The objective of this study is to provide guidelines for expert witness in product liability lawsuits. The expert testimony is one of the powerful methods to mitigate the burden of the proof in product liability litigations. However, it has been seldomly accepted as a reliable evidence by trial judges because the expert's testimony has sometimes turned out to be illogical and unreliable. In order for the expert testimony to be admittable in the court, the expert should have a thorough understanding of his/her role as an expert witness and follow scientific methodology whose soundness has been generally accepted by both industries and academy.

  • A Voltage Bus Conditioner (VBC) is used to mitigate the voltage transients on a common power distribution bus. The VBC described here utilises inductive storage and unlike its counter part with capacitive storage, it can employ the entire stored energy towards transients' mitigation. The performances of adaptive duty ratio control and sliding mode control have been compared. The simulation results (with the package SABER) indicate that the sliding mode control results in the shortest and the smallest bus voltage excursions.
