  • This study proposes an effective visualization method for image distortion in high-resolution, machinable Fresnel mirrors, which offer significant advantages over traditional convex mirrors by being thinner and lighter. While commercial optical design programs are excellent at optimizing aberrations, they have some limitations in visualizing images from complex optical configurations. Therefore, NXTM CAD software is employed to achieve photorealistic ray-traced visualization with high-fidelity image rendering due to its flexible two-dimensional and three-dimensional modeling environments. In comparative simulations with various mirror profiles, we identified an aspherical Fresnel mirror with a conic constant of k = -3 that can reduce distortion to 1.79%, according to Zemax OpticStudio® calculations. Finally, the NXTM software successfully validated the distortion image of our machinable aspherical Fresnel mirror design. Subsequent practical experiments validated the consistency between the predicted distortion and the actual visualization results. We anticipate that this specialized visualization technique holds the potential to radically transform the interactive design of optical systems that incorporate aspherical Fresnel mirrors.

  • A $1\;{\times}\;4$ micro mirror array is designed and fabricated. In contrast to other micro mirrors which utilize torsional flexure hinges or cantilevers for restoring torque and supporting purpose, we have placed a substrate hinge structure under each mirror. Each micro mirror consists of address electrode, substrate hinge consisting of pin and staple, supporter post, and mirror plate. Electrical connection between mirror plate and ground electrode is established by substrate hinge. Mirror undergoes a rotational motion due to electrostatic force when voltage difference is applied between address electrode and mirror plate. Micro mirrors with two different types of staple shape and two different pin sizes are designed and fabricated. Each mirror is designed to have ${\pm}\;10^{\circ}$ of deflection angle and have $100\;{\times}\;110\;{\mu}m^2$ of size.

  • A mirror cam mechanism a kind of conjugate cam mechanism consists of two cams, two rollers, and two links. Since profiles of two mirror cam are identical, a simultaneous machining of two cams is achievable. Some machining errors on cam profiles do not result in the internal acting force, which often causes problems in high speed cam mechanism between two links. Also, since angular accelerations of two links are same, the internal acting force by the difference of the angular accelerations does not occur in the mechanism. Thus the mirror cam mechanism is very useful in high speed machinery. This paper studies a design method as well as a machining method, and develops an exclusive CAD/CAM software for mirror cam profiles. The developed CAD/CAM software is applied to a typical mirror cam mechanism and a mock-up equipment is built in order to test the machinism mirror cm. Experimental investigations show that the contact between cam surface and roller surface according to cam rotation agrees well with the simulation on the developed CAD/CAM software.

  • Aerodynamic characteristics, such as drag and lift, play an important role in automobile design under certain speed conditions. Such characteristics are essential to design an automobile since they are directly related to automobile's performance such as passenger safety and fuel consumption. There is a huge demand for the automobile to have safe performance at high speed. Reduction in drag is also important and it could lead to the solution of air flow induced noise and dust problems. The objective of this research is to find out the aerodynamic differences between conventional side mirror and a modified one using CFD. Although drag generated around a side mirror is only about 7% of the total drag when a car runs, it is very closely related to driver's field of vision and noise generation. CFD simulation of the flowfield around a car side-view mirror was performed using a commercial code; Gambit and FLUENT.

  • The aims of this research were to characterize magic realism by analyzing existing magical reality literature reviews and research and to identify material that may inspire ideas for stage and film costume design by analyzing and drawing design characteristics and magic realism of costumes from Director Tarsem Singh's movie, 'Mirror, Mirror'. For the methodology, characteristics of magic realism in literature and, movies were analyzed, with a theoretical consideration of these materials on magical realism. Data on costume design and magical realism characteristics for use in the analysis were collected from the main characters of 'Mirror, Mirror' as well as from other characters. The result of this analysis was the emergence of five common characteristics of the magic realism Historicity, the most remarkable characteristic seen in Tarsem Singh films, was expressed through the symbolic meaning and decorative patterns shown by the traditional-style costumes, colors. Symbolization was expressed through the symbolic meaning, decorative elements, and traditional clothes, as shown by the colors and forms of the costumes. Fantasy was expressed through the colors, decorative elements, forms of traditional clothing, and forms with symbolic meaning. Reproducibility was expressed through the method of decorative element, symbolic meaning, traditional forms and de-structural clothes. Ambiguity, which can be associated with the combined characteristics of historicity and fantasy, was expressed in the clothes worn in the scenes that confounded time and space within the film.

  • An optimal design of a simple beam-shaped flexure hinge mount supporting an optical mirror is presented. An optical mirror assembly is an opto-mechanically coupled system as the optical and mechanical behaviors interact. This side-supporting mount is flexible in the radial direction and rigid for the remaining degrees of freedom to support the mirror without transferring thermal load. Through thermo-elastic, optical and eigenvalue analysis, opto-mechanical performance was predicted to establish the objective functions for optimization. The key design parameters for this flexure are the thickness and length. To find the optimal values of design parameters, response surface analysis was performed using the design of experiment based on nested FCD. Optimal design candidates were derived from the response surface analysis, and the optimal design shape was confirmed through Opto-mechanical performance validation analysis.

  • The design of a flat-field XUV spectrograph is optimized for a high throughput, aberration-corrected spectral image in the wavelength region of 50-300 $\AA$ The varied-line spacing (VLS) concave grating theory for an XUV spectrograph with a toroidal mirror in front of an entrance slit is derived. Since the derived theory includes the arbitrary shaped source, it is able to correct the limit of the simple optimization theory which considers only a point source at the center of the entrance slit. The reflection matrix at the toroidal mirror and the diffraction matrix at VLS grating are derived and compared with those of a holographic grating. The absolute energy efficiency of a flat-field spectrograph is calculated by considering the reflectivities of the toroidal mirror and the Au coated concave grating and the grating efficiency. The alignment sensitivity of the toroidal mirror and the concave grating is investigated, and the method to achieve the best imaging of XUV spectrum is discussed. The calculated resolving power of the flat-field XUV spectrograph is more than 4000 in the aberration-corrected wavelength range. The focused spot size at the dispersion plane is less than $20\mu \textrm m\times \mu \textrm m$at the wavelength 100$\AA$ It is shown that a high throughput characteristic can also be achieved through a careful adjustment of alignment parameters.

  • Objective: Mirror therapy is one of the promising methods suggested for the upper limb rehabilitation of stroke patients. While mirror therapy was presented to be effective in improving motor function of stroke patients, problems were raised as preceding studies had various methods in applying mirror therapy. Some studies even reported no effect in mirror therapy. Our supposition for the reason of such problems was a decrease of attention on the illusive image during mirror therapy of stroke patients, and we aimed to observe this. Design: A cross-sectional preliminary study. Methods: Three hemiplegic acute patients were recruited for the traditional mirror therapy. It lasted for 30 minutes, and 12 different tasks were asked to perform. All procedures were video-recorded, and Observer XT was used to analyse mirror-gazing time, gaze-distracted time, preparation time, frequency of mirror gazing, frequency of distraction, frequency of preparation for treatment. Results: Subjects spent an average of 4-5 minutes having instructions about the mirror therapy intervention (preparation duration), an average of 11 minutes watching the mirror during therapy (mirror-gazing duration), and the rest of 14-15 minutes looking around the environment (gaze-distracted duration). During the mirror therapy, the number of distracted moments (frequency of distraction) was eight times more than focusing on the mirror (frequency of mirror gazing). Conclusions: Once the patient looks at the mirror, it only lasts about 5 seconds on average. Thus, we confirmed that patients could not concentrate on the illusion during the session and therefore it may have affected the effectiveness of the therapy.

  • The principal operation of a ring laser gyroscope depends on the phase difference for the counter-propagating waves within a closed path. The reflection mirrors mounted on the resonator block form the traveling waves. Thus, the dimension accuracy of resonator block influences the traveling path of beam. In order to maintain the stable optical beam path in the ring resonator, the piezo-driven moveable mirror is adopted for the path length control under the thermal expansion or mechanical strain of resonator block. This paper presents the mathematical description of the elastic behavior of piezo-driven mirror. This description can be applied for the concept design of piezo-driven mirror.
