  • In the view point of practical engineering the identification problem may be considered as a problem to determine the optimal model in the sense of minimizing a given criterion function using the input-output records of the plant. In the system identification the statistical approach has been known to be very effective when the topological structure of the system and the statistical characteristics of the observation noises are known a priori. But in the practical situation there are many cases when the inforhation about the observation noises or the system noises are not available a priori. Here, the authors propose a new identification method which can be used effectively even in the cases when the variances of observation noises are unknown a priori. In the method, the identification of unknown parameters of a linear diserete system is achieved by minimizing the improved quadratic criterion function which is composed of the term of square equation errors and the term to eliminate the affection of observation noises. The method also gives the estimate of noise variance. Numerical computations for several examples show that the proposed procedure gives satisfactory results even when the short time observation data are provided.

  • Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) application study on enhancing the flexibility of AC power system has continued to make progress. A thyristor-controlled series capacitor (TCSC) is a useful FACTS device that can control the power flow by adjusting line impedances and minimize the loss of power flow and voltage drop in a transmission system by adjusting line impedances. Reduced power flow loss leads to increased loadability, low system loss, and improved stability of the power system. This study proposes the optimal location and compensation rate method for TCSCs, by considering both the power system loss and voltage drop of transmission systems. The proposed method applies a multi-objective function consisting of a minimizing function for power flow loss and voltage drop. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated using IEEE 14- and a 30-bus system.

  • The present paper addresses the optimal design of composite laminates with the aim of minimizing free-edge delamination stresses. A technique involving the application of particle swarm optimization (PSO) integrated with FEM was developed for the optimization. Optimization was also conducted with the zero-order method (ZOM) included in ANSYS. The semi-analytical method, which provides an approximation of the interlaminar normal stress of laminates under in-plane load, was used to partially validate the optimization results. It was found that optimal results based on ZOM are sensitive to the starting design points, and an unsuitable initial design set will lead to a result far from global solution. By contrast, the proposed method can find the global optimal solution regardless of initial designs, and the solutions were better than those obtained by ZOM in all the cases investigated.

  • This paper addresses the modified Dynamic Relaxation algorithm, called mdDR by minimizing displacement error between two successive iterations. In the mdDR method, new relationships for fictitious mass and damping are presented. The results obtained from linear and nonlinear structural analysis, either by finite element or finite difference techniques; demonstrate the potential ability of the proposed scheme compared to the conventional DR algorithm. It is shown that the mdDR improves the convergence rate of Dynamic Relaxation method without any additional calculations, so that, the cost and computational time are decreased. Simplicity, high efficiency and automatic operations are the main merits of the proposed technique.

  • In this paper, we propose a new watermark algorithm for halftone images using iterative error minimizing method. In the proposed method, watermark bits are hidden at pseudo-random locations within a halftone image. To remove the distortions due to the inserted watermark bits and increase the invisibility of watermark, an iterative error minimizing technique is used. We define the halftoning error is defined as the difference between the original grayscale image and HVS-filtered printed halftone image. Then we iteratively find the pixel pattern with minimum halftoning error and displace the original pixel pattern with it. In order to be robust to geometrical modification like cropping or rotation, we insert the same watermark periodically into halftone images. Experiments using printed and scanned images show that the proposed method is a robust method to the geometrical modification and to hide the large amount of data within a halftone image without noticeable distortion.

  • Tumor-treating fields therapy involves placing pads onto the patient's skin to create a low- intensity (1 - 3 V/cm), intermediate frequency (100 - 300 kHz), alternating electric field to treat cancerous tumors. This new treatment modality has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the USA to treat patients with both newly diagnosed and recurrent glioblastoma. To deliver the prescribed electric field intensity to the tumor while minimizing exposure of organs at risk, we developed an optimization method for the electric field distribution in the body and compared the electric field distribution in the body before and after application of this optimization algorithm. To determine the electric field distribution in the body before optimization, we applied the same electric potential to all pairs of electric pads located on opposite sides of models. We subsequently adjusted the intensity of the electric field to each pair of pads to optimize the electric field distribution in the body, resulting in the prescribed electric field intensity to the tumor while minimizing electric fields at organs at risk. A comparison of the electric field distribution within the body before and after optimization showed that application of the optimization algorithm delivered a therapeutically effective electric field to the tumor while minimizing the average and the maximum field strength applied to organs at risk. Use of this optimization algorithm when planning tumor-treating fields therapy should maintain or increase the intensity of the electric field applied to the tumor while minimizing the intensity of the electric field applied to organs at risk. This would enhance the effectiveness of tumor-treating fields therapy while reducing dangerous side effects.

  • This paper deals with an algorithm for solving nonlinear programming problems with equality constraints. Nonlinear programming problems are transformed into a square sums of nonlinear functions by the Lagrangian multiplier method. And an iteration method minimizing this square sums is suggested and then an algorithm is proposed. Also theoretical basis of the algorithm is presented.

  • This work deals with a switching method for minimizing overcurrent in a three-phase interleaved bidirectional DC-DC converter with frequency modulation. Generally, a three-phase interleaved DC-DC converter is used to reduce a current ripple component. The combined operation of three-phase and two-phase converters can significantly reduce the ripple component. However, the conventional PWM method cannot solve severe overcurrent during phase transfer or frequency variation for power control. To overcome this problem, this work proposes a new PWM switching method. A 3 kW DC-DC power converter is designed and implemented, and the converter is operated in discontinuous current mode with varying switching frequencies for power control. Simulation and experimental results show the validity of the proposed switching method. The proposed switching method can be widely used in the field of current ripple reduction for three-phase interleaved bidirectional DC-DC converters.

  • A novel method of minimizing video quality variation is proposed for a real-time frame-layer rate control algorithm with a transmission buffer. The proposed rate control method uses a non-iterative optimization method for low computational complexity, and performs bit allocation at the frame level to minimize variation in distortion between frames. In order to reflect the buffer status, we use well-known PID control method. Computational complexity of PID control is very low, so the proposed algorithm is suitable for real-time low-complexity video encoder. Experimental results indicate that the proposed control method provides better PSNR performance than the existing rate control method.
