Level set, and active contour(snakes) models are extensively used for image segmentation or shape extraction in computer vision. Snakes utilize the energy minimization concepts, and level set is based on the curve evolution in order to extract contours from image data. In general, these two models have their own drawbacks. For instance, snake acts pooly unless it is placed close to the wanted shape boundary, and it has difficult problem when image has multiple objects to be extracted. But, level set method is free of initial curve position problem, and has ability to handle topology of multiple objects. Nevertheless, level set method requires much more calculation time compared to snake model. In this paper, we use good points of two described models and also apply multi resolution algorithm in order to speed up the process without decreasing the performance of the shape extraction.
This paper presents an improved current control strategy for a three-phase grid-connected inverter under distorted grid conditions. Distorted grid condition is undesirable due to negative effects such as power losses and heating problem in electrical equipments. To enhance the power quality of distributed generation systems under such a condition, a modulated finite control set - model predictive control (MFCS-MPC) scheme will be proposed, in which the optimal switching signals of inverter are chosen by online basis using the principle of current error minimization. In addition, the moving average filter (MAF) is used to improve the phase-lock loop in order to obtain the harmonic-free reference currents on the stationary frame. The usefulness of the proposed MFCS-MPC method is proved by the comparative simulation results under different operating conditions.
Using the spectroscopic analysis and the theoretical modeling, physical properties of the nearby astrometric binary $\mu$ Cas have been determined. In spite of the well-defined parallax and astrometric orbit, there has been a chronic mass ratio problem between components. Recently, the radius of the primary component has been detected from the optical interferometric observation of the CHARA array. Using the high resolution spectroscopic analysis, we found that $\mu$ Cas have $\alpha$-enhanced chemical composition with respect to the scaled solar abundance by a factor of two. Combining our abundance analysis with recently determined physical properties, the consistent models for $\mu$ Cas have been constructed within the frame work of standard stellar theory. Through a statistical minimization between theoretical model grids, a reliable set of physical dimensions has been defined. Furthermore, the mode oscillation frequency of the best model has been calculated.
This paper presents a method to minimize torque ripple of a V-type IPMSM using the PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) method with FEM. The proposed algorithm includes one objective function and three design variables for a notch on the surface of a rotor. The simulation model of the V-type IPMSM has 3-phases, 8-poles and 48 slots with 2 notches on the one-pole rotor surface. The arc-angle, length and width of the notch are optimized to minimize the torque ripple of the motor. The cogging torque of the model is reduced by 55.6% and the torque ripple is decreased by 15.5 %. Also, the efficiency of the motor is increased by 15.5 %.
By enforcing skew of permanent magnet, detent force decreases, but lateral force that acts for vertical direction of moving direction occurs. This force deteriorates various performance of PMLSM as that acts to friction force between mover and LM guide. Therefore, in this paper, V skew model is proposed for lateral force's reduction and simulation results are compared to experimental value.
This paper proposes efficient schemes for image segmentation using the region-based active contour model. The developed methods can approach the boundaries of the desired objects by evolving the curves through minimization of the Mumford-Shah energy functionals, given arbitrary curves as initial conditions. Topological changes such as splitting or merging of curves should be handled for the methods to work properly without prior knowledge of the number of objects to be segmented. This paper introduces how to change topological structure of the curves and shows experimental results by applying the methods to the images.
A cost minimization model for designing AS/RS (Automated Storage/Retrieval Systems) has been developed, whose objective function includes penalty cost caused by the incapability of meeting throughput rate requirements as well as S/R machine cost, storage rack cost, and interface conveyor cost. Since the model is a nonlinear integer programming problem which is very hard to solve with large problem size the problem is divided into four cases according to the ratio of horizontal S/R machine speed to its vertical speed and the existence of the penalty cost. A solution procedure is developed which solves each problem exactly under the different number of S/R machines.
This paper considers a multi-stage flowshop scheduling Problem where the setup times of jots depend on immediately preceding jobs. Three heuristics algorithms, CAMPBELL, PEIDAN and CAMRING are proposed. The performance measure is a minimization of makespan. The parameters of simulation model are PS(ratio of the processing times to setup times), M(number of machines), and N(number of job). This simulation model for each algorithm is a 4$\times$3$\times$3 factorial design with 360 observations. The makespan of the proposed heuristic algorithms is compared with the optimal makespan obtained by the complete enumeration of schedules. This yardstick of comparison is defined as a relative error. The mean relative error of CAMPBELL, PEIDAN, and CAMRING algorithms are 4.353%, 7.908%, and 8.578% respectively. The SPSS, is used to analyse emphirical results. The experimental results show that the three factors are statistically significant at 5% level.
It's not practical to collect all information at the entire degrees of freedom of finite element model. The incomplete measurements should be expanded for subsequent analysis and damage detection. This work presents the analytical methods to expand the incomplete static or dynamic response data. Using the expanded data, introducing the concept of residual force, and minimizing the performance index expressed as the stiffness matrix and its difference before and after damage, the variation in stiffness matrix is derived. Based on the difference in the stiffness matrix, the damage detection method of structures is also provided. The validity of the proposed methods is illustrated in a numerical application, the numerical results are analyzed for applications, and the applicability of both methods is investigated.

This paper aims to consider an overall benefit-duration optimization (OBDO) problem for the sake of maximizing owner's economic benefits, whilst considering influences of schedule compression incurred opportunity income on the profitability of a large-scale construction project. Unlike previous schedule optimization models and techniques that have focused on project duration or cost minimization, with greater weight on contractors' interests, OBDO facilitates owner's economic benefits through overall benefit-duration optimization. In this paper, the objective function of OBDO model is formulated. An example is illustrated to prove the feasibility and practicability of the overall benefit-duration optimization problem. The significance of employing OBDO model and future research work are also described.
