Analysis of Minerals in the Hair of Mental Retardation

  • Several heavy metals are known to give some kinds of mental retardation although abnormal X-chromosome is closely connected with genetic disease such as mental retardation. This study dealt with the influence of minerals in the hair of mental retardation people. Minerals were analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (Sciex Elan 6100, Perkin-Elmer corporation, Foster, CA, USA). The nutritional elements such as Ca, Na, K were higher level (p<0.01) in normal group than in the mental retardation group. The toxic elements such as Cd (p<0.01) and As were higher level in the mental retardation group than in normal group. But Pb is not significant difference among the all groups including normal group.

  • Essential metabolic functions have been identified for seven macrominerals (calcirum, phosprorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chloride, and sulfur), and eight microminerals (cobalt, copper, iodine, iron, manganese, molybdenum, selenium, and zinc). Major functions for each of these minerals are summarized. Considerable research suggests that chromium is also essential and that it functions by facilitating insulin activity. Studies are reviewed which indicate that chromium supplementation of animal diets may: 1) increase glucose removal from blood, 2) reduce carcass fat and increase lean in nonruminants, 3) alter egg cholesterol content, and 4) enhance immunity and disease resistance in ruminants. A number of other minerals including nickel, boron, vanadium, arsenic, silicon, lithum, and lead have been reported to be essential, but specific metabolic functions have not been defined for any of these elements. Limited research in poultry suggests that boron may be of practical significance in some instances.

  • Minerals of system Ag-Sb have been found in iead-zinc (-silver) ores from the Dongjeom and the Taebaeg ore deposits, which were formed at later stage of the Yeonhwa 1 mine mineralization. The Ag-Sb minerals are intergrown intimately with galena, pyrargyrite and alabandite. Their chemical compositions as determined by electron microprobe analyser show that they are chracterized by relatively high content of S, up to 5.89 atomic percent. Also the composition of the minerals may be separated into two: Ag3.89 Sb1.00-Ag7.19 Sb1.00 and Ag2.96 Sb1.00-Ag4.00 Sb1.00.

뽕잎분말이 납 투여한 흰쥐 체내의 납과 무기질수준에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Mulberry Leaf Powder Supplementation on Lead Status and Minerals Content in Pb-administered Rats)

  • This study was designed to investigate the effects of mulberry leaf powder supplementation on lead (Pb) status and mineral (Ca, Fe, Cu and Zn) content in Pb-administered rats for 4 weeks. Thirty two male rats were divided into 4 groups: a control, Pb, Pb5M (500 ppm $Pb + 5\%$ mulberry leaf powder), and Pb10M (500 ppm $Pb + 10\%$ mulberry leaf powder). There were no significant differences in food intake and initial body weight among groups. Mulberry leaf powder treatments showed significant decreases in food efficiency ratio and body weight gain. But FER of $Pb5M\%$ and Pb10M were significantly increases than that of Pb group. The levels of serum aspartate transaminase (AST) and creatinine were decreased by mulberry leaf powder treatment. Minerals content of liver and kidney were significantly decreased in the Pb groups than that of control group. Whereas, fecal minerals content were significantly increased in the Pb5M and Pb10M than those of control group. Pb content of serum, liver and kidney was significantly increased in the Pb group than those of control group. However, by mulberry leaf powder administration (Pb5M and Pb10M), Pb level of serum, liver and kidney were lowered than that of Pb group. And fecal Pb excretion was significantly increased in the Pb5M and Pb10M than that of Pb group. These results showed mulberry leaves were effective for lowing Pb accumulation in serum, organs, which may have potential to prevent Pb toxicity.

AMOUNT AND DISTRIBUTION OF DIETARY MINERALS IN SELECTED PHILIPPINE FORAGES

  • Eight Philoppine forages were studied to obtain the following: 1) nutrient concentrations and digestibility, 2) distribution of the various minerals in fiber fractions through mineral analyses of neutral detergent fiber(NDF) and acid detergent fiber(ADF) residues, and 3) correlation coefficients among the factors affecting forage quality and mineral concentrations. These Philippine forages were paragrass [Brachiaria mutica (Forsk.) Stapf], stargrass (Cynodon plectostachyum Pilger), napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schumach.) calopo (Calopogonium muconoides Desv.), centrocema (Centrocema pubescens Benth.), gliricidia [Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Walp.] leucaena [Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit.] and sesbania [Sesbania grandiflora (L.) Poir]. Species differences(p<0.01) were observed on various nutrient fractions including mineral composition and digestibility. The cell wall(NDF) fraction, prepared by boiling in neutral detergent solution, contained the following proportions of the total mineral originally present (%): calcium (Ca), 0.7; phosphorus(P), 14.3; magnesium(Mg), 1.9; potassium(K), 3.7; copper(Cu), 16.4; zinc(Zn), 2.9; molybdenum(Mo), 9.3; cobalt(Co), 16.2; manganese(Mn), 5.6, and iron(Fe), 81.3. The ligno-cellulose(ADF) fraction, prepared by boiling in acid detergent solution, contained the following proportions of the total mineral originally present(%): Ca, 0.2; P, 4.4; Mg, 0.7; K, 2.8; Cu, 32.3; Zn, 1.1; Mo, 8.9; Co, 4.7; Mn, 5.4; and Fe, 36.8. Correlation coefficients among the factors affection forage quality and mineral concentrations were also observed. Evidently, 75 and 45% of the minerals in grasses and legumes was positively correlated to CP and IVDMD, respectively. Moreover, 55, 80 and 75% of the forage minerals was negatively correlated to NDF, ADF and ADL fraction, respetively, implying that most of the minerals reside in the non-structural cell components.

이산화탄소 포집광물을 활용한 심층혼합처리용 Soil-Cement의 품질 특성에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on the Quality Characteristics of Soil-Cement for Deep Mixing Method Using Carbon Capture Minerals(CCM))

  • 본 연구에서는 이산화탄소 포집광물을 심층혼합처리용 Soil-cement로 활용하기 위하여 최적 Soil-cement의 배합비를 도출하였으며, 이산화탄소 포집광물이 혼합된 Soil-cement의 품질특성을 평가하였다. 이산화탄소 포집광물은 슬러리 형태로 발생되며, 함수량 평가결과, 약 50%로 나타났다. 따라서, Soil-cement의 배합시 단위수량에서 이산화탄소 포집광물의 함수량을 제외하였다. 이산화탄소 포집광물 활용 Soil-cement를 현장토에 대하여 현장배합을 실시한 결과 재령 28일 기준 3.0MPa 이상을 나타냄으로써 설계 허용지지력 기준을 만족하는 것으로 나타났다. 이산화탄소 포집광물의 유해성 검증을 실시한 결과 구리(Cu)의 경우 0.055mg/L 검출되었지만 허용기준치에 만족하였으며, 이 외의 유해 물질은 용출되지 않은 것으로 분석되었다.

  • The experiment was conducted to investigate the physico-chemical characteristics of vacuum and aerobically packed meat from Elk deer weighing 170 $\pm$ 10kg of 28 to 30 months old, chilled at 4$^{\circ}C$for 10days. The moisture content, crude protein, crude fat and crude ash in deer loin were 74.46%, 22.11%, 1.27% and 1.13%: the leg parts had 75.47%, 22.68%, 1.58% and 1.27%, respectively. The decrease in moisture content was greater in aerobic packaging than in vacuum packaging. The lysine content of loin and leg parts were 2,380mg% and 2,270mg% and the glutamate content of loin and leg parts were 4,145mg% and 3,987.5mg% respectively. On the whole, the loin contained more amino acids than leg part. Of the mineral contents, phosphorus, potassium and sodium were present in large amounts and mineral content was decreased with longer chilling period. The leg parts contained more potassium, sodium, phosphorus, zinc, magnesium and calcium than loin parts. In conclusion, vacuum packaging is considered more advantageous in preventing meat color change and microbial deterioration for consumers interest.

한국산 대두의 열처리에 의한 피트산과 무기성분의 함량변화 (Changes of Phytic acid and Minerals by Heat Treatment in Korean Soybeans)

  • In this study, effect of heat treatment on phytic acid, phosphorus compounds, and minerals in Korean soybean varieties was investigated. Results were summarized as follwo: 1. In the soybeans tested, protein content ranged from 34.6 to 44.6%, lipid content from 15.4 to 20.2%, fiber content from 4.8 to 6.1% and ash content from 4.5 to 5.9%. 2. Content range for phytic acid in soybean varieties was 1,300 to 1,542mg/100g and its mean was measured 1,392mg/100g. With increasing of the temperature, the phytic acid tends to be destroyed, especially at 6$0^{\circ}C$ the loss was averaged about 20%. 3. Total phosphorus content in soybean ranged from 607 to 681mg/100g and the decending order of phosphors content in soybean varieties was Millyang > Hwangkeum > Kwangkyo > Danyoup > Hill > Jangyoup. It was also destroyed with increasing temperature. 4. Phytate phosphorus content range in soybean was from 315.6 to 318.0mg/100g and decreased with increasing temperature. 5. Inorganic phosphorus content ranged from 95.5 to 110.0mg/100g and it was increased by temperature rising among soybean varieties. 6. Phytate phosphorus to total phosphorus ratio ranged from 5.2 to 5.7 and decreased by temperature rising. 7. The content of nonphytate phosphorus varied widely between soybean varieties and decreased with temperature increase. 8. The content of calcium, iron and magnesium ranged from 15.7 to 25.7mg/100g from 8.8 to 16.8mg/100g and from 121.9 to 143.6mg/100g respectively. The content of Mg showed small difference among soybean varieties. The change of mineral content with heat treatment in soybean did not give any meaningful change mineral content.

Application of magnesium to improve uniform distribution of precipitated minerals in 1-m column specimens

  • This study discussed the possible optimization of enzyme-mediated calcite precipitation (EMCP) as a soil-improvement technique. Magnesium chloride was added to the injection solution to delay the reaction rate and to improve the homogenous distribution of precipitated minerals within soil sample. Soil specimens were prepared in 1-m PVC cylinders and treated with the obtained solutions composed of urease, urea, calcium, and magnesium chloride, and the mineral distribution within the sand specimens was examined. The effects of the precipitated minerals on the mechanical and hydraulic properties were evaluated by unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and permeability tests, respectively. The addition of magnesium was found to be effective in delaying the reaction rate by more than one hour. The uniform distribution of the precipitated minerals within a 1-m sand column was obtained when 0.1 mol/L and 0.4 mol/L of magnesium and calcium, respectively, were injected. The strength increased gradually as the mineral content was further increased. The permeability test results showed that the hydraulic conductivity was approximately constant in the presence of a 6% mineral mass. Thus, it was revealed that it is possible to control the strength of treated sand by adjusting the amount of precipitated minerals.

한반도 서해안 변산-태안지역 연안 퇴적물과 육상지질과의 지화학적 상관관계 (Geochemical Relationship Between Shore Sediments and Near Terrestrial geology in Byunsan-Taean Area, West Coast of Korea)

  • A geochemical study was carried out to define how marine shore sediments are related to their terrestrial source rocks in the region of Taean and Byunsan Peninsula, western Korea. The lithology of the coastal part of the study area is composed of Pre-Cambrian granite gneiss, schist, Jurassic terrestrial sedimentary rocks, and Cretaceous plutonic intrusives. Shore sediments are transported from three drainage tributaries. The sediments consist of quatrz with clay minerals, such as illite, kaolinite, smectite, chlorite. Heavy minerals include hematite, ilmenite, rare amount of zircon and apatite. Compared to those in coastal rocks, amount of heavy minerals in the sediments is considerably low. The low content of heavy minerals is thought to be attributed to the heavy mineral detainment in the river beds and influences of tidal currents which cause heavy minerals to accumulate in specific spots. Chemical composition of the major and trace elements, trace elements, and REE chondrite normalized pattern suggest that shore sediments transported from the corresponding drainage tributary show close mineralogical and geochemical relationships with the source rocks distributed in the Taean and Byunsan Peninsula.
