Centrifuge model experiments were performed to investigate the confining effects of the sheet piles, installed to the sides of soft clay ground treated with sand compaction piles, on the bearing capacity and concentration ratio of composite ground. For the given g-level in the centrifuge model tests, replacement ratio of SCP and the width of surcharge loads on the surface of ground with SCP, the confining effects of installing the sheet piles on the edges of SCP ground on the bearing capacity, change of stress concentration ratio and failure mechanism were investigated. Kaolin, one of typical clay mineral, and Jumunjin standard sand were used as a soft clay ground and sand compaction pile irrespectively. As results of experiments, lateral confining effect by inserting the model sheet piles fixed to the loading plate was observed. For the strip surcharge loading condition, the yielding stress intensity in the form of the strip surcharge loads tends to increase with increasing the embedded depth of sheet piles. The stress concentration ratio was found not to be influenced consistently with the embedded depth of sheet piles whereas the effect of stress intensity on stress concentration ratio shows the general trend that values of stress concentration ratio are relatively high at the initial stage of loading and tend to decrease and converge to the certain values. For the failure mechanism in the case of reinforced with sheet piles, displacement behavior related to the punching failure, settlement right beneath the loading plate occurred since the soil was confined with sheet piles, was observed.
Coarse woody debris (CWD, $\ge$ 5 cm in maximum diameter) is an important functional component, especially to nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems. To compare mass and nutrient dynamics of CWD in natural oak forests, a two-year study was conducted at Quercus serrata and Q. variabilis stands in Yangpyeong, Kyonggi Province. Total CWD (snag, stump, log and large branch) and annual decomposition mass (Mg/ha) were 1.9 and 0.4 for the Q. serrata stand and 7.5 and 0.5 for the Q. variabilis stand, respectively. Snags covered 72% of total CWD mass for the Q. variabilis stand and 42% for the Q. serrata stand. Most of CWD was classified into decay class 1 for both stands. CWD N and P concentrations for the Q. variabilis stand significantly increased along decay class and sampling time, except for P concentration in 2002. There were no differences in CWD N concentration for the Q. serrata stand along decay class and sampling time. However, CWD P concentration decreased along sampling time. CWD N and P contents (kg/ha) ranged from 3.5∼4.7 and 0.8∼1.3 for the Q. serrata stand to 22.8∼23.6 and 3.7∼4.7 for the Q. variabilis stand. Nitrogen and P inputs (kg/ha/yr) into mineral soil through the CWD decomposition were 0.7 and 0.3 for the Q. serrata stand and 1.6 and 0.3 for the Q. variabilis stand, respectively. The number of CWD and decay rate were main factors influencing the difference in CWD mass and nutrient dynamics between both stands.
In Australia, many cropping areas are affected by salt. In these regions, Chenopodiaceous plants, such as Atriplex, Kochia and Bassia spp have been planted to improve soil conditions. These plants have become invaluable feed resources for grazing animals in dry summers, but have a high sodium content. To assess the impact of high salt intake on grazing deer, two experiments were conducted. The first experiment used 30 fallow weaner deer to examine the effect of salt level in the diet on feed intake, water intake and body weight of fallow deer. Salt was added to lucerne chaff at 0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 and 6% and fresh water was offered all the time. Increasing the salt level in the diet from 0 to 6% didn't affect feed intake, osmotic pressure and mineral concentration in blood of fallow deer. However, water intake was significantly higher (p<0.05) in deer fed diets containing more than 3% salt. Body weight was lower (p${\leq}$0.056) for fallow deer in July and August when salt content was over 3%, suggesting they can ingest over 15 g sodium/day without significant depression in both feed intake and growth rate if the fresh water is available. In the second experiment, 18 red weaner deer were fed lucerne chaff diets containing 1.5, 4.5 and 6.0% salt with 6 deer/diet. The results revealed that feed intake and blood osmotic pressure were similar (p>0.05) for red deer fed different levels of salt although the feed intake declined from 1.91 to 1.67 kg with the increase of salt level from 1.5% to 6.0% in the diet. Water intake was significantly higher for deer fed diets containing over 4.5% salt, but there was no difference in body weight during the experiment. However, no recommendation can be made on the salt tolerance of red deer due to limited increment of salt level in the diet.

The aim of this study was to determine the nutritive value of some legume species in salt-affected soils of South-East Anatolian region using chemical composition and in vitro gas production kinetics. In this study, Lotus corniculatus, Trifolium alexandrinum, Medicago sativa were sown and tested in four different locations. A 3 by 4 factorial design with 3 legume species and 4 salt levels (non salty electrical conductivity (EC)<4 dS/m; low salt: 4 dS/m>EC<8 dS/m, medium saline: 8 dS/m>EC<16 dS/m and high salt: 16 dS/m>EC) was used in the study. Results indicated that salinity and plants had no significant effect on ash and ether extract. Dry matter (DM), acid detergent fiber, digestible dry matter, dry matter intake (DMI) were affected by plant, salinity and plant${\times}$salinity interaction. On the other hand neutral detergent fiber, relative feed value (RFV), and DMI were affected by salinity and plant${\times}$salinity interaction. Mineral contents were affected by plant species, salinity and salinity${\times}$plants interactions. In vitro gas production, their kinetics and estimated parameters such as were not affected by salinity whereas the gas production up to 48 h, organic matter digestibility, metabolizable energy (ME), and net energy lactation ($NE_L$) were affected by plant and plant${\times}$salt interaction. Generally RFVs of all species ranged from 120 to 210 and were quite satisfactory in salty conditions. Current results show that the feed value of Medicago sativa is higher compared to Lotus corniculatus and Trifolium alexandrinum.
This study was conducted to present primary data on the change of the physical characteristics of reservoir sediments for understanding the sedimentation. The records of the annual summation of the precipitation of >50mm per day (AP50) were compared with changes of bulk density, organic matter, mean grain-size, and sand ratio in sediment cores sampled from three reservoirs without dredging record. Reservoir sediments, characterized by mineral soil, contained organic matters originated from the debris of terrestrial plants, and changes of organic matter were related to changes of grain-size flowing into reservoirs when sediments of fine sandy loam showed 10% of organic matter contents. Rapid changes of grain-size and sand ratio in the sediment cores were associated with the increase and decrease of precipitation, and fluctuation of water level and water flow in reservoirs might have influenced on the formation of sediments in reservoirs. Records of AP50 suggested that sediments could accumulate more than about 30 within the short period of 10 years. The accumulated sediments in a short time can reflect the effect of natural and anthropogenic events on the physical characteristics of sediments.

This study adopted soil test and laboratory physical model experiments to simulate the tailings impoundment accumulation process according to the principle of similarity. Relying on the practical engineering, it analyzed the tailings deposition characteristics on dry beach surface during the damming process, as well as the variation rules of dam saturation line. Results suggested that, the tailings particles gradually became finer along the dry beach surface to inside the impoundment. The particle size suddenly changed at the junction between the deposited beach and the water surface, which displayed an obvious coarsening phenomenon. Besides, the deposited beach exhibited the vertical feature of coarse upward and fine downward on the whole. Additionally, in the physical model, the saturation line elevated with the increase in dam height, and its amplitude was relatively obvious within the range of 1.0-4.5 m away from the initial dam. Under flood condition, the saturation line height was higher than that under normal condition on the whole, with the maximum height difference of 4 cm. This study could provide an important theoretical basis for further studies on dam failure experiments and the evolution rules of leaked tailings flow.
This study, one of the projects for investigation of the precious metal deposits of the Circum-Pacific Ocean coon-tries, was performed in a gem field of Pailling, Cambodia, in which there are numbers of undeveloped mineral resources. The gem fields in the Pailling area are typically distributed in the laterite, lying on of weathered basalts. The gem grade of corundum is low in the surface soil horizon(less than 1 m in depth), but is higher in the subsurface. Occurrence and genetic environment of the precious stone are not concerned in the soils. A Precious stone that is already made from at the least upper part of volcanic rocks is produced in large quantities to undergoing to weathering of the rocks. A precious stone is made from upper part of the formation under the high temperature when volcano is vomiting or after vomiting. and/or made from between the formation under the high temperature when other volcano is vomiting. Volcanic rocks including precious stone are a little different from other volcanic rocks when volcano is vomiting, but chemical composition of rocks is not far different from other volcanic rocks.

A biofertilizer, BIOACTIVE, was manufactured by N-acetyl-thioproline (ATCA) and mineral phosphate solubilizing bacteria. The growth promoting effect of the biofertilizer on lettuce was evaluated under three different pot conditions, and its stability was assessed in the field. According to the results of the pot experiments, plant growth was improved compared with that of control: 128%, 122%, and 153% for the leaf number, leaf length, and leaf mass, respectively. Applying the manufactured biofertilizer increased the concentration of phosphate: 118% and 132% in the cultivation soil and plant cells, respectively. These show that BIOACTIVE may have potential as an effective biofertilizer in agriculture.

Recently dredged material generation has a tendency to increase since harbor construction are under progress. In this study, an experiment had been carried out which replacement of dredged material of Busan and Ulsan port as concrete mixing material. For this experiment, physical and chemical test of dredged material was carried out, and compressive strength test of mortal specimen with dredged material in scale, as aggregate replacement, was carried out. Compressive strength of Busan and Ulsan was both increased when the ratio of mixing materials was 10%. Compressive strength of Dredged material from Busan with about 70% of mineral silt showed increse when the ratio of aggregate replacement in 30%. In addition, in the result of the ICP test, both dredged materials satisfied the waste's marine discharge treatment and soil contamination concern and measures criterion on that using dredged material as a concrete material can influence on application of concrete positively.
Semiquantitative mineralogical analysis of clays in soils was performed to understand the distribution of clay minerals in relation to bedrock lithology on the northern basin of the Nakdong River. The soils developed on the granitic bedrocks have high contents of kaolinite and smectite. mite was the major clay mineral in the soils from sedimentary bedrocks, with minor kaolinite, smectite, and intergrade (interstratified chlorite-smectite or hydroxy-interlayed vermiculite) clay minerals. Illite and kaolinite contents of the soils from metamorphic and volcanic bedrocks fall between those of the soils from the granitic bedrocks and those of the soils from the sedimentary bedrocks. The clay mineralogy of the soils depends on the compositions of bedrock minerals and their susceptibility to chemical weathering. The weathering of plagioclase resulted in the high kaolinite content of the soils derived from granitic bedrocks, while the soils derived from sedimentary bedrocks are abundant in residual illite.
