This study was carried out to investigate the effects of the counter-pressure setting and the roller speed of a rice whitening machine on the head rice recovery. milling capacity and milling efficiency, and also to find out the optimum operational conditions of the machine. The radial pressure inside the whitening chamber and the outlet axial pressure were measured to study their relationships with the head rice recovery, milling capacity and milling efficiency. The results of the study are summarized as follows. (1) The most important factor in rice whitening was the counter-pressure setting. It significantly affected the head rice recovery. (2) The roller speed significant affected the milling capacity and milling efficiency , but it did not affected the head rice recovery. (3) Both the radial pressure and the outlet axial pressure were affected by the counter-pressure setting but not by the roller speed. Both of them increased almost linearly with the counter-pressure setting. There was a significant correlation between the radial pressure and the outlet axial pressure. (4) The flow rate through the whitening chamber when the feed gate was fully opened increased with the roller speed, but it was not affected by the counter-pressure setting. (5) The head rice recovery decreased as the counter-pressure setting increased , but it was not affected by the roller speed. The reason could be explained by the fact that the radical pressure increased only with the counter-pressure setting. (6) The milling capacity increased with the counter-pressure setting and linearly with the roller speed. The milling efficiency generally increased with both the counter-pressure setting and the roller speed. However, the effect of roller speed was negligible at the higher counter-pressure setting. The temperature rise inside the whitening chamber was moderate with the mean of 11.3℃ (range 5.6-18.3℃) even though it increased slightly with the roller speed. Considering the head rice recovery and milling efficiency, the optimum operational conditions of the machine appeared to be the counter-pressure setting of 67g/㎠ and the roller speed of 1,050rpm. Neglecting the small difference in the head rice recovery , the greater milling capacity could be obtained at the counter-pressure setting of 85g/㎠ with the roller speed of 850-1050rpm.
The milling and particulate characteristics of Al alloy-$Al_2O_3$ powder mixtures for a reaction-bonded $Al_2O_3$ (RBAO) process were studied. A commercially available prealloyed Al powder with Zn, Mg, Cu and Cr alloying elements (7475 series) was mixed with a calcined sinter-active $Al_2O_3$ powder and then milled in centrifugal milling equipment for ~48 hrs. The Al alloy-$Al_2O_3$ powder mixtures after milling were characterized and evaluated in various ways to reveal their particulate characteristics during milling. The milling efficiency of the Al alloy increased with a longer milling time. Comminution of the Al alloy particles started with its elongation, showing a high aspect ratio. With a longer milling time, the elongated Al alloy particle changed in terms of its shape and size, becoming equiaxially fine particles. Regardless of the milling efficiency of the Al alloy particles, all of the Al alloy particles repeatedly experienced strong plastic deformation during milling, giving rise to higher density of surface defects, such as microcracks, and leading to higher residual microstress within the Al alloy particles. The chemical reactions, oxidation behavior and hydration behavior of the Al alloy particles and the hydrolysis characteristics of their reaction with the environment were also observed during the milling process and during the subsequent powder handling steps.

To treat and recycle a large quantity of converter slag. the milling properties of -14/ +24 mesh-sized slag has been considered. The optimal conditions in milling process were investigated for producing powder-type slag and the required consumption was derived for the economical grinding. The characteristics of milling processes were studied in the variation of the rotational speed, milling time, filling ratio of ball, and size and amount of feed. The grinding efficiency was also examined. The optimal rotational speed in this experimental condition was observed to be the value of 79% of critical speed. The extent of grinding was increased with increasing the grinding time. but the efficiency of milling was decreased with the time. 50% ball filling was shown to have the optimal grinding effect, and less amount and small-sized feed made the milling efficiency high. As the result, using Bond's equation, power required for efficient milling was considered and the highest value was observed in the condition of high grinding time and optimal rotational speed.
The reaction bonded alumina ceramics was prepared through the addition of each SiC and ZrO2 powder to the mixture of Al metal powder and Al2O3 The mono sized (3mm) and biodal sized (3mm+5mm) balls were used in attrition milling of Al and starting powders. The milling efficiency of both cases was compared by the analysis of particle size and X-ray diffraction. After the forming and sintering of each powder batchs the weight gains dimensional changes and densities were determined. The specimens were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscope. Bimodal sized balls had better milling effect than single ball size in the milling of Al powder. However in the milling which ceramic powders mono sized the green body during the reaction sintering at 1$600^{\circ}C$ for 5 hour was about 10% The densities attained the values of 92-98% theoretical. The SiC added specimen that was milled with 3mm ball media had 96% theoretical density and dense microstructure.

In five-axis milling, optimal CL-data (cutter location data) should be generated to have advantages over three-axis milling in terms of accuracy and efficiency. This paper presents an algorithm for generating collision-free CL-data for five-axis milling using potential energy method. By virtually charging the cutter and part surfaces with static electricity, global collision as wells as local interference is eliminated. Additionally, machining efficiency is improved by minimizing the curvature difference between the part surface and tool swept surface at a CC-point (cutter contact point) simultaneously.
The reaction-sintered alumina and zirconia-alumina ceramics having low firing shrinkage were prepared from the Al/Al2O3 or Al/ZrO2(Ca-PSZ) powder mixtures via the attrition milling. And in this milling process the effect of the characteristics of used powders was investigated. Attrition milling was much more effective in reducing the particle size of ceramic/metal mixed powders than ball milling. Powder mixtures of flake-type Al with coarse alumina was much more effectively comminuted by the attrition milling than the mixtures of globular-type Al with coarse alumina powders. And coarse alumina than fine alumina was much more beneficial in cutting and reducing the ductile Al particles. In the contrary to Al/Al2O3 powder mixtures, Al/ZrO2 powder mixtures was not effectively comminutd. But whether using the alumina ball media or attrition milled with Al2O3 powder rather than Al, the milling efficiency was much more increased.

Laser-assisted machining (LAM) is known to be an effective and economical technique for improving the machinability of difficult-to-machine materials. In the LAM method, material is preheated using a laser heat source and then the preheated area is removed by following cutting tool. For laser-assisted turning (LAT), the configuration of the system is not complicated because laser irradiates from a fixed position. In contrast, laser-assisted milling (LAMill) system is not only complicated but also difficult to control because laser heat source must always move ahead of the cutting tool along a three dimensional (3D) tool path. LAMill is still early stage and cannot yet be used to machine finished products with 3D shapes. In this study, a laser-assisted fillet milling process was developed for machining 3D shapes. There are no prior studies combining fillet milling and LAMill. Laser-assisted fillet milling strategy was proposed, and effective depth of cut (EDOC) was obtained using thermal analysis. Experiments were designed using response surface method and cutting force prediction equations were developed using statistical analysis and regression analysis. The optimum machining conditions were also proposed, and energy efficiency of the LAMill was analyzed by comparing the specific cutting energy of conventional machining (CM) and LAMill.
Fabrication of reaction-bonded $Al_2O_3$ (RBAO) ceramics using Al-Zn-Mg alloy powder was studied in order to improve traditional RBAO ceramic processing using Al powder. The influence on reaction-bonding and microstructure, as well as on physical and mechanical properties, of the particulate characteristics of the $Al_2O_3$-Al alloy powder mixtures after milling, was revealed. Variation of the particulate characteristics of this $Al_2O_3$-Al alloy powder mixture with milling time was reported previously. To start, the $Al_2O_3$-Al alloy powder mixture was milled, reaction-bonded, post-sintered, and characterized. During reaction-bonding of the $Al_2O_3$-Al alloy powder mixture compacts, oxidation of the Al alloy took place in two stages, that is, there was solid- and liquid-state oxidation of the Al alloy. The solid-state oxidation exhibited strong dependence on the density of surface defects on the Al-alloy particles formed during milling. Higher milling efficiency resulted in less participation of the Al alloy in reaction-bonding. This was because of its consumption by chemical reactions during milling, and subsequent powder handling, and could be rather harmful in the case of over-milling. In contrast to very little dependence of oxidation of the Al alloy on its particle size after milling, the relative density, microstructure, and flexural strength were strongly dependent on particle size after milling (i.e., on milling efficiency). The relative density and 4-point flexural strength of the RBAO ceramics in this study were ~98% and ~365 MPa, respectively, after post-sintering at $1,600^{\circ}C$.

There are many difficulties in automatic polishing for die & mold surfaces. Even though the process has been studied in the past 15 years, it has not been achieved yet, but by the process of actual hand work of well-skilled workers. A new magentic assisted polishing process, which is one of the potential method for automation of surface finishing has been studied in the past 10 years by colleagues. The process has many merits, but on the other hand also has demerits, one being low efficiency of gridability by comparision with grinding wheel polish. Therefore, some attempts were tried to improve the grindability by adopting electropolishing, ultra-high speed milling, 5-axis controlled machine etc... most recently by collegues. This study also aims to improve the efficiency of polishing by introducing the easily-polished shape surface milling method equalizing the tool feed per tooth to the pick feed. This milling method was experimentally confirmed to have sufficient grindability to polish milled surface (with 10 .mu. mRmax surface roughness) into mirror surface (with 0.4 .mu. mRmax surface roughness).
