  • Ignition transient is a. very rapid process lasting only in the order of 100 milliseconds and therefore it is difficult to measure all relevant ballistic properties. Numerical simulation is thus useful to quantify some of these hard to measure flow and ballistic properties. One-dimensional model was employed to study the effects of aging using simplified aging scenarios for both N-H sustainer and booster motors. Also the effects of newly designed igniter on the ignition of N-H sustainer was simulated. Radiation effects could be significant in terms of energy flux increase to the propellant surface and the energy exchange between the combustion gas itself. One dimension implementation of radiation showed significant effects for rear-mounted igniter. Implementation of radiation effects into 2-D axi-symmetric numerical model was completed and its effects on the N-H sustainer were examined. To have a reliable prediction of computer model on ignition transient, accurate chemical property data on the propellant and igniter gas are required. It was found that such property data on aged N-H motors are not available. Chemical aging model can be used to predict to some degree of accuracy effects of aging on chemical and mechanical properties. Such a model was developed, albeit 2-dimensional, to study migration of moisture through a representative solid rocket motor configuration.

  • Due to the importance of the SiGe/Si heterostructure in the fields of thermoelectric and electronic applications, SiGe/Si heterostructures have been extensively investigated. For practical applications, thermal stability of the heterostructure during the thermoelectric power generation or fabrication process of electronic devices is of great concern. In this work, we focused on the effect of thermal annealing on the defect configuration in the SiGe/Si heterostructure. The formation mechanism of planar defects in an annealed SiGe/Si heterostructure was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. Due to the interdiffusion of Si and Ge, interface migration phenomena were observed in annealed heterostructures. Because of the strain gradient in the migrated region between the original interface and the migrated interface, the glide of misfit dislocation was observed in the region and planar defects were produced by the interaction of the gliding misfit dislocations. The planar defects were confined to the migrated region, and dislocation pileup by strain gradient was the origin of the confinement of the planar defect.

  • In this study, the etched trench properties including cross-sectional profile, surface roughness, and crystalline defects were investigated depending on the various silicon etching and additive gases, For the case of HBr$He-O_2SiF_4$ trench etching gas mixtures, the excellent trench profile and minimum defects in the silicon trench were achieved. Due to the residual oxide film grown by the additive oxygen gas, which acts as a protective layer during trench etching, the undercut and defects generation in the trench were suppressed. To improve the electrical characteristics of trench gate, the hydrogen annealing process after trench etching was also adopted. Through the hydrogen annealing, the trench corners might be rounded by the silicon atomic migration at the trench corners having high potential. The rounded trench corner can afford to reduce the gate electric field and grow a uniform gate oxide. As a result, dielectric strength and TDDB characteristics of the hydrogen annealed trench gate oxide were remarkably increased compared to the non-hydrogen annealed one.

  • A growing number of organizations are considering the adoption of new technologies to enhance their competitiveness. The new projects related with RFID technology are some typical examples: the companies planning to carry out those projects hope that the introduction of new technology into their organization would remedy all their current inefficiencies and eventually bring them considerable economic benefits. However, such successful results would not be obtained if the complicated problems related with S/W and H/W developments, complex team structure or the migration with barcode and etc. are not resolved satisfactorily during the project. In this paper, some potential barriers to successful introduction of new technology, especially that of RFID, are identified and classified into three categories according to the phases of introduction process, i.e., investigation, implementation and application phases. The results of a survey regarding the importance of each barrier, the respondents of which are active developers or consultants of RFID technology, are also given.

  • Eph receptors and their ligands ephrins have been implicated in guiding the directed migration of neural crest cells (NCCs). In this study, we found that Wnt1-Cre-mediated expression of ephrinA5-Fc along the dorsal midline of the dien- and mesencephalon resulted in severe craniofacial malformation of mouse embryo. Interestingly, expression of cephalic NCC markers decreased significantly in the frontonasal process and branchial arches 1 and 2, which are target areas for the migratory cephalic NCCs originating in the dien- and mesencephalon. In addition, these craniofacial tissues were much smaller in mutant embryos expressing ephrinA5-Fc. Importantly, EphA7-positive cephalic NCCs were absent along the dorsal dien- and mesencephalon of mutant embryos expressing ephrinA5-Fc, suggesting that the generation of cephalic NCCs is disrupted due to ephrinA5-Fc expression. NCC explant experiments suggested that ephrinA5-Fc perturbed survival of cephalic NCC precursors in the dorsal midline tissue rather than affecting their migratory capacity, which was consistent with our previous report that expression of ephrinA5-Fc in the dorsal midline is responsible for severe neuroepithelial cell apoptotic death. Taken together, our findings strongly suggest that expression of ephrinA5-Fc decreases a population of cephalic NCC precursors in the dorsal midline of the dien- and mesencephalon, thereby disrupting craniofacial development in the mouse embryos.

  • We investigated the nonradiative energy transfer process from Rhodamine 6G to Malachite Green in ethylen glycol solvent using time correlated single photon counting system equipped with a modelocked Ar ' laser. The reduced concentration and critical transfer distance for various acceptor concentration were obtained by using a full-fitting analysis of the fluorescence decay curves. We found that Huber model is more suitable than Forster model and the influence of energy migration through the dipole-dipole interaction becomes more significant for the low acceptor concentrations relative to the donor concentration($5\times 10^4$mol/l).

  • Cudraxanthone D (CD) is a natural xanthone compound derived from the root barks of Cudrania tricuspidata. However, the biological functions of CD in human metabolism have been rarely reported until now. Autophagy is the self-degradation process related to cancer cell metastasis. Here, we elucidated the effects of CD on human oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cells' metastatic ability. We confirmed that CD effectively decreased the proliferation and viability of SCC25 human OSCC cells in time- and dose-dependent manners. Also, the metastasis phenotype of the SCC25 cell (migration, invasion, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition [EMT]) was inhibited by CD. To further investigate the mechanism by which CD inhibited the metastatic capacity, we detected the relationship between EMT and autophagy in the SCC25 cells. The results revealed that CD inhibited the metastasis of the SCC25 cells by attenuating autophagy. Thus, our findings produced a potential novel agent for the treatment of human OSCC metastasis.

  • The solubility and species distribution of radionuclides in groundwater are essential data for the safety assessment of deep underground spent nuclear fuel (SNF) disposal systems. Americium is a major radionuclide responsible for the long-term radiotoxicity of SNF. In this study, the solubility of americium compounds was evaluated in synthetic groundwater (SynDB3), simulating groundwater from the DB3 site of the KAERI Underground Research Tunnel. Geochemical modeling was performed using the ThermoChimie_11a thermochemical database. Concentration of dissolved Am(III) in Syn-DB3 in the pH range of 6.4-10.5 was experimentally measured under over-saturation conditions by liquid scintillation counting over 70 d. The absorption spectra recorded for the same period suggest that Am(III) colloidal particles formed initially followed by rapid precipitation within 2 d. In the pH range of 7.5-10.5, the concentration of dissolved Am(III) converged to approximately 2×10-7 M over 70 d, which is comparable to that of the amorphous AmCO3OH(am) according to the modeling results. As the samples were aged for 70 d, a slow equilibrium process occurred between the solid and solution phases. There was no indication of transformation of the amorphous phase into the crystalline phase during the observation period.

  • Sensors with wireless communication functions are essential for acquiring and transmitting spatio-temporal data that is not easily accessible in sensor network environments. However, these sensors lack adaptability to large amounts of sensing data processing or dynamic environments, resulting in over-consumption of power and network overhead. This paper proposes a mobile agent that can acquire, transmit, and process only the necessary data by applying thresholds, and presents methods for autonomous migration and communication processing of mobile agents.
