Coating Immobilization Using Soy Protein Polymers: Technical Concepts and Importance to Quality

  • Coating immobilization is the process by which the wet coating applied to paper or paperboard reaches the final form. A coating immobilization point is defined as the solids content reached during drying where no further redistribution of coating materials occurs. Good control of coating immobilization is important in producing coated paper and paperboard with consistent high quality. This paper discusses the technical concepts of how coatings immobilize, and describes the importance of good immobilization control on coating holdout and coating structure. The use of soy protein polymers to modify the coating immobilization point is discussed. Soy proteins, because of their interaction with coating pigments, make a significant contribution to the immobilization characteristics of coastings. This technology gives the formulator options for changing the immobilization point to improve the performance of the coating. The importance of immobilization on casting uniformity, microporosity and sheet qualities is discussed, including binder migration, mottle, gluing, and print quality.

  • The need to determine the permeability of organic vapors to polymeric films such as aromas, flavors, etc. has significantly increased in the food industry because of preservation and safety issues along with migration problems. However, due to the complex nature of the permeation process, there have been few investigations compared to nonorganic compounds. In this paper, we review the history of permeability studies and typical methods of permeability measurement such as the isostatic method and quasi-isostatic method for organic vapors. New instrumental developments and significant findings are also introduced and discussed.

Interaction of Oxygen and $CH_4$ with Molybdenum Oxide Catalysts

  • The Near-Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (NEXAFS) technique and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) were utilized to investigate the reaction of CH4 and O2 on the MoO3/SiO2 catalyst. The NEXAFS results showed that the stoichiometry of the molybdenum oxide catalyst supported on silica was MoO3. MoO3 was reduced to MoO2 when the catalyst was exposed to CH4 at 773 K. NEXAFS results confirm that lattice oxygen is directly related to the process of CH4 oxidation which takes place on the surface of MoO3/SiO2 catalysts. DSC results show that the structure of MoO3 changes around 573 K and this structural change seems to improve the migration of oxygen in the lattice.

  • The 1,5-sigmatropic rearrangements involving group (X) migration in ${\omega}$(X)-substituted 1,3-pentadiene, $C^1H_2=C^2H-C^3H=C^4H-C^5H_2-X$, where X = H, $CH_3$, $BH_2$, $NH_2$, OH or F, are investigated MO theoretically using the AM1 method. For the migrating groups without lone pair electrons, X = H, $CH_3$, or $BH_2$, the suprafacial pathway is favored, whereas for the migrating groups with lone pair electrons participating in the TS, $X=NH_2$, OH, or F, the antarafacial pathway is favored electronically. However excessive steric inhibition in the antarafacial TS for $X=NH_2$ leads to subjacent orbital controlled suprafacial process. The antarafacial shift of F is relatively disfavored compared to that of OH due to smaller orbital overlap and larger interfrontier energy gap in the TS.

  • Microtubule-organizing center (MOTC) plays pivotal roles in cell division process. Integrity of the spindle pole body (SPB) in Saccharomyces cerevisiae is required for migration and separation of sister chromatids in mitotic phase. Role of an essential SPB component, Spcl05, is poorly understood. Here we show that throughout all stage of cell division cycle, GFP-tagged Spcl05p localizes at SPB and its protein stability is fluctuated with mitosis-specific modifications. To gain new insights into the function of Spc105, we generated and characterized novel temperature sensitive spc105 mutants. (omitted)

Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress Induces CAP2 Expression Promoting Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition in Liver Cancer Cells

  • Cyclase-associated protein 2 (CAP2) has been addressed as a candidate biomarker in various cancer types. Previously, we have shown that CAP2 is expressed during multi-step hepatocarcinogenesis; however, its underlying mechanisms in liver cancer cells are not fully elucidated yet. Here, we demonstrated that endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress induced CAP2 expression, and which promoted migration and invasion of liver cancer cells. We also found that the ER stress-induced CAP2 expression is mediated through activation of protein kinase C epsilon (PKCε) and the promotor binding of activating transcription factor 2 (ATF2). In addition, we further demonstrated that CAP2 expression promoted epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) through activation of Rac1 and ERK. In conclusion, we suggest that ER stress induces CAP2 expression promoting EMT in liver cancer cells. Our results shed light on the novel functions of CAP2 in the metastatic process of liver cancer cells.

Dyeing Properties of Functional PET Double Knit Fabric (기능성 폴리에스터 이중 편성물의 염색 특성)

  • In this study, the dyeing properties of double knit fabric composed of PET/PTT bi-component fiber and quick dry fiber were examined with disperse dyes. In addition, the shrinkage characteristics were investigated during the dyeing process. The K/S values and shrinkage rate of PET/PTT bi-component fiber were higher than those of PET/co-PET bi-component fiber and quick dry fiber. In the dye bath, dye migration of exhausted on PET/PTT bi-component fiber to quick dry fiber was found at high dyeing temperature. It was not found that there was a significant difference in K/S value on dyeing temperature between 115℃ and 130℃. But the slight color difference of two sides of a double knit fabric was found.

  • 대규모 양자컴퓨터의 개발은 현재 사용하는 많은 암호화 알고리즘에 위협이 될 것으로 예상한다. 현재 NIST 는 양자 후 시대에 대비하기 위해 양자 내성 암호를 표준화 하기 위한 작업을 진행하고 있으며 이에 따라 post-quantum 시스템의 마이그레이션 과정이 필요하며 각 시스템에 QSC 적용을 위한 연구들이 이어지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 양자 후 시대에 대비하기 위해 NIST 의 PQC post quantum conference 에서 발표한 PQC 후보와 QSC 마이그레이션 과정 및 적용 방안에 대해 조사한다.

A Study on the Analysis of Population Dynamics and the Model of population Relocation (人口過程의 分析과 人口配置計劃의 모델模索)

  • Regional relocation of population in Korea is required strongly from natural and environmental sides for substantial growth of economy and the rigorous revival national economy against especially internationalization. This paper aimed for analysed the population distribution by regional and special characteristics of the inter-migration and showed the direction of population policy through the model building. Relocation methods of population by region has been examined through the process from the approach method by Haurin's production function to the approach by the utility function. The examination of the development model is done efficiently, how utility these approach models are depends on that scientific and composite plan for population problems against forced policy should be taken precedence.

Revised Geology and Geological Structures of the Northeastern Chungnam Basin in the Southwestern Korean Peninsula

  • The Chungnam basin is a crucial area for studying the Mesozoic crustal evolutionary history of the Korean Peninsula. This study reports the revised geology and new isotopic ages from the northeastern Chungnam Basin based on detailed geological mapping and LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb analysis. Our renewed geologic map defines intra-basin, basin-bounding, and basement fault systems closely related to hydrothermal gold-bearing quartz vein injections. Here, we propose the directions of (micro)structural and geochronological future work to address issues on the relationship between the tectonic process, basin evolution, and hydrothermal fluid migration in the southwestern Korean Peninsula.
