  • Samples were collected from both places including the coastal area within the height of 5 m above the mean sea level (msl) (DH) and the top of the coastal terrace of 10-15 m msl (KS) high in Gwangseungri, Gochanggun, Korea. To find the origin of the deposit in the coastal area, granulometric analysis and geochemical analysis were performed. The result showed that the DH samples were originated from the reddish soils overlaying weathered bedrock which presented gradual change of chemical composition from the bottom toward the top. Clay minerals were found from the DH samples. These results concluded that the DH samples were found as in-situ weathered materials. The KS samples were originated from the soil layer covering gravel layer at the foot slope of the hill along the coast. The KS samples contained different chemical compositions from the DH. It is inferred that some of this layer was disturbed or experienced the influx of foreign material. The particle size of the KS samples was different from those found on the beach. The particle size of lower parts of KS site was finer than that on the beach, but the particle size of middle part of the site was coarser than that on the beach. The sorting of the KS site was poorer than that on the beach. Thus, it is inferred that some parts of the layer were formed by short-lived high energy event rather than sustained and continuous action of tidal currents and/or waves. Analysis using an optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) method showed that the burial age of samples from KS site were found 0.65-0.71 ka. Though the characteristics of the sediment layer and forming event in this area should be further studied, it can be inferred that this sedimentary layer formed by coastal flooding with storm.

  • This study aimed at developing the two stage and dual filtration system. It has a sand + activated carbon layer above the underdrain system and a sand layer above the middledrain system for pretreatment. When retrofitting an old filter bed or designing a new one, this technology can substitute the existing sand filter bed without requiring a new site. In order to extend the filtering duration, the upper layer of the filter bed consists of the rapid sand filtration with large particles which pre-treats and removes coarse particles and turbidity matters. The middle layer has biological activated carbon(BAC) and granular activated carbon(GAC) to eliminate dissolved organic matters, disinfection by-products precursors etc. The lower layer consists of the sand filtration for the post filtering mode. In this study, a pilot plant of two stage and dual filtration system was operated for 4 months in the S water treatment plant in Kyounggi-Do. The stability of turbidity was maintained below 1NTU. The TOC, THMFP and HAAFP were removed about 90% by two stage and dual filtration system, which is almost 2 times higher than S WTP. From analysis result of HPC along the depth of activated carbon + sand layer at 2nd stage, microorganism was mostly not detected, however, increment of HPC was shown as it becomes deeper. It indicates that growth of microorganism is occurred at activated carbon layer.

  • Vertical temperature distributions in muddy intertidal sediments near the Jebu Island on the west coast of Korea were obtained during the period of ebb tide which occurred in day time. The observations of mud temperature were made with thermistor embedded probe at 2cm interval for 18cm-layer of sediment for five different months of the year. Temporal changes in the vertical profile of the sediment temperature are strongly depend on the air temperature, the previous time of flood tide and the time of ebb tide. Heat exchanges in the surface layer (0-2 cm) in terms of magnitude and direction are greater than and opposite to those in the deeper sediment layer (8-12 cm), respectively and do not show any significant seasonal variations. In general, the surface layer gains heat while the deeper layer loses the heat. By using the 1-D diffusion equation temporal vertical profiles of the sediment temperature were obtained and were compared with the observed ones. The results show that in the sediment layer below 4 cm-depth the heat transport is predominantly by molecular diffusion. The average magnitude of heat flux into the sediment layer (0-18 cm) during the ebb tide when the mudflats were exposed in the middle of the day were between 4.1 and $28.9\;W/m^2$.

  • The formation age and depositional environment of the marine terrace I of the estimated paleoshoreline altitude of 18m in Sanhari of Ulsan coast, southeastern Korea were investigated on the basis of examination of lithofacies and stratigraphy of terrace deposits. Marine deposits of the terrace is composed of rounded boulders(70cm in diameter) and rounded pebbles(1.0cm in diameter) which overlay them. The above rounded boulders which lie on the paleo-shore platform are considered to have been formed by wave abrasion in the same period that the paleo-shore platform was developed. The rounded pebbles which lie on the rounded boulder layer are considered to have been deposited in gravel beach and berm environment, judging from the laminae developed in this layer. The paleo-shore platform and marine rounded gravel layer of the terrace are assumed to have been formed in the large transgression period of the Last Interglacial culmination stage(MIS 5e), judging from the comparision of the formation age of 125ka B.P. of Juckcheon terrace I in the adjacent Pohang coast which was dated by amino acid dating. The terrestrial deposit of this terrace was largely composed of angular and subangular gravel mixed with marine rounded pebble which has been carried away mainly from the deposit of previous marine terraces and redeposited in this terrace. The lowest peat layer of terrastrial deposit was considered to have been deposited during the period from the late MIS 5e which is the estimated finishing time of deposition of the above marine gravels to the early stage of following regression period(MIS 5d) in which the sea level was still high. The sediments of angular and subangular gravel deposit which lie on this peat layer were assumed to have been deposited during the period from the early stage of the first regression period(MIS 5d) of the Last Interglacial to the Last Glacial. The lower part of the angular gravel layer is composed of the deposits of the fluvial and colluvial sediments, whereas most of the upper and middle part of the layer is mainly composed of angular gravels of colluvial sediments formed in the cold environment.

  • Pathogenesis of otitis media was studied in an animal model of rats from a histopathological and biochemical point of view. Basic anatomical outline, and distribution and type of normal epithelial cells of the rat bulla were described as a background study. Pseudomonas otitis media was developed in rats by inoculating $10^{9}$ bacteria into the tympanic bulla. Histopathologic change of the mucoperiosteal layer showed acute stage of infection from 3 days to 3 weeks, and it became chronic after 4 weeks animals through 12 weeks. Enzyme profile in the extracts of the inflammatory middle ear tissue was studied. The levels of three enzymes, PZ-peptidase, LDH, and lysozyme were much higher in the middle ear tissue than in the corresponding sera as might be expected. Tissue/serum ratios of the enzyme activities were 13-38 for PZ-peptidase, 63-177 for LDH, and 18-94 for lysozyme. Possible role of the PZ-peptidase and possible origins of the three enzymes detected in the tissue were discussed.

  • In order to examine the effects of different wind deflectors on the wind load distribution characteristics of extra-large cooling towers, a comparative study of the distribution characteristics of wind pressures on the surface of three large cooling towers with typical wind deflectors and one tower without wind deflector was conducted using wind tunnel tests. These characteristics include aerodynamic parameters such as mean wind pressures, fluctuating wind pressures, peak factors, correlation coefficients, extreme wind pressures, drag coefficients and vorticity distribution. Then distribution regularities of different wind deflectors on global and local wind pressure of extra-large cooling towers was extracted, and finally the fitting formula of extreme wind pressure of the cooling towers with different wind deflectors was provided. The results showed that the large eddy simulation (LES) method used in this article could be used to accurately simulate wind loads of such extra-large cooling towers. The three typical wind deflectors could effectively reduce the average wind pressure of the negative pressure extreme regions in the central part of the tower, and were also effective in reducing the root of the variance of the fluctuating wind pressure in the upper-middle part of the windward side of the tower, with the curved air deflector showing particularly. All the different wind deflectors effectively reduced the wind pressure extremes of the middle and lower regions of the windward side of the tower and of the negative pressure extremes region, with the best effect occurring in the curved wind deflector. After the wind deflectors were installed the drag coefficient values of each layer of the middle and lower parts of the tower were significantly higher than that without wind deflector, but the effect on the drag coefficients of layers above the throat was weak. The peak factors for the windward side, the side and leeward side of the extra-large cooling towers with different wind deflectors were set as 3.29, 3.41 and 3.50, respectively.

  • Purple-discoloration of the uppermost leaves has been observed in some soybean cultivars in recent years. The purpose of this study was to characterize the novel phenotypic changes between the uppermost and middle leaves via multiple approaches. First, quantitative trait loci mapping was conducted to detect loci associated with the novel phenotype using 85 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) of the 'Daepung' × PI 96983 population. 180K SNP data, a major quantitative trait locus (QTL) was identified at around 60 cM of chromosome 6, which accounts for 56% of total phenotypic variance. The genomic interval is about ~700kb, and a list of annotated genes includes the T-gene which is known to control pubescence and seed coat color and is presumed to encode flavonoid 35-hydroxylase (F3'H). Based on Hyperspectral imaging, the reflectance at 528-554 nm wavelength band was extremely reduced in the uppermost leaves compared to the middle (green leaves), which is presumed die to the accumulation of anthocyanins. In addition, purple-discolored leaf tissues were observed and compared to normal leaves using a transmission electronic microscope (TEM). Base on observations of the cell organelles, the purple-discolored uppermost leaves had many pigments formed in the epidermal cells unlike the normal middle leaves, and the cell wall thickness was twice as thick in the discolored leaves. The thickness of the thylakoid layer in the chloroplast the number of starch grains, the size of starch all decreased in the discolored leaves, while the number of plastoglobule and mitochondria increased.

  • This study analyzed the synoptic distribution and vertical structure about four cases of precipitation occurrences using NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data and upper level data of winter intensive observation to be performed by National Institute of Meteorological Research at Bukgangneung, Incheon, Boseong during 63days from 4 JAN to 6 MAR in 2012, and Observing System Experiment (OSE) using 3DVAR-WRF system was conducted to examine the precipitation predictability of upper level data at western and southern coastal regions. The synoptic characteristics of selected precipitation occurrences were investigated as causes for 1) rainfall events with effect of moisture convergence owing to low pressure passing through south sea on 19 JAN, 2) snowfall events due to moisture inflowing from yellow sea with propagation of Siberian high pressure after low pressure passage over middle northern region on 31 JAN, 3) rainfall event with effect of weak pressure trough in west low and east high pressure system on 25 FEB, 4) rainfall event due to moisture inflow according to low pressures over Bohai bay and south eastern sea on 5 MAR. However, it is identified that vertical structure of atmosphere had different characteristics with heavy rainfall system in summer. Firstly, depth of convection was narrow due to absence of moisture convergence and strong ascending air current in middle layer. Secondly, warm air advection by veering wind with height only existed in low layer. Thirdly, unstable layer was limited in the narrow depth due to low surface temperature although it formed, and also values of instability indices were not high. Fourthly, total water vapor amounts containing into atmosphere was small due to low temperature distribution so that precipitable water vapor could be little amounts. As result of OSE conducting with upper level data of Incheon and Boseong station, 12 hours accumulated precipitation distributions of control experiment and experiments with additional upper level data were similar with ones of observation data at 610 stations. Although Equitable Threat Scores (ETS) were different according to cases and thresholds, it was verified positive influence of upper level data for precipitation predictability as resulting with high improvement rates of 33.3% in experiment with upper level data of Incheon (INC_EXP), 85.7% in experiment with upper level data of Boseong (BOS_EXP), and 142.9% in experiment with upper level data of both Incheon and Boseong (INC_BOS_EXP) about accumulated precipitation more than 5 mm / 12 hours on 31 January 2012.

  • The growth and biomass of reeds(Phragmites australis) growing in a subsurface treatment wetland system were investigated from April 2003 to October 2003. Nitrogen(N) and phosphorous(P) concentrations in above-ground(AG) and below-ground(BG) tissues of reeds were examined and the removal rate of N and P by reeds were analyzed. The system, 29 m in length, 9 m in width and 0.65 m in depth, was constructed in June 2001 on a floodplain in the down reach of the Kwangju Stream in Korea in order to purify polluted water of the stream. A bottom layer of 45 cm in depth was filled with crushed granites(15~30 mm in diameter) and a middle layer of 10 cm in depth was filled with pea pebbles(10 mm in diameter). An upper layer of 5 cm contained course sand. Reeds were transplanted on the surface of the system, which were dug out of natural wetlands, and their shoots were trimmed 40 cm in height. The height and density of the shoots averaged 237.7 cm and 244.0 shoot/$m^2$, respectively, when the reeds grew fully. The maximum biomass of AG and BG tissues were 1,964 and 1,577 g/$m^2$, respectively, and the AG : BG ratio of biomass was 1.26. Mean AG and BG dry weights were recorded as 1,355 and 748 g/$m^2$, respectively. The AG and BG tissue concentrations of N averaged 12.37 and 10.01 mg/g, respectively, and those of P 2.37 and 2.03 mg/g, respectively. Inflow to the system averaged 40 $m^3$/day. The concentrations of total nitrogen(T-N) in influent and effluent were 8.4 mg/L and 3.2 mg/L, respectively, and those of total phosphorous(T-P) were 0.73 and 0.38 mg/L, respectively. The total removal of T-N and T-P by the system during the investigation period averaged 140.2 and 9.7 g/$m^2$, respectively, and the total uptake of N and P by the reeds were calculated as 24.39 and 4.73 g/$m^2$, respectively. Average removals of about 17% of N and about 49% of P by reeds were recorded. The N and P concentrations in AG tissues were significantly different among the three zones of the system:near to inflow(St1), in the middle of system(St2), and near to outflow(St3). The N and P concentrations in BG tissues were also significantly different among St1, St2 and St3. N and P concentrations in AG and BG tissues of reeds growing in St1 were higher than those in St2 and St3. The height and density of shoots of reeds in St1 were larger than those in St2 and St3. Significant amounts of N and P in the influent were taken up by reeds in St1.

  • The geology of the Tumbang Mirih area in the Middle Kalimantan, Indonesia comprises Permian to Carboniferous Pinoh Metamorphic Rocks and Cretaceous Sepauk Plutonics of the Sunda Shield, late Eocene Tanjung Formation, Oligocene Malasan Volcanics, Oligocene to early Miocene Sintang Intrusives and Quaternary alluvium. Results of geochemical exploration and geological mapping exposed obviously that large amounts of gold-bearing quartz veins were found in the whole Tumbang Mirih areas. In many places, gold grains were megascopically detectable from panning products of stream sediments and conglomerate as Quaternary sediments. Even though no remnants of quartz veins are revealed in the most of survey area except Taran region, association of fold grains with layers of quartz pebbles and clays which correspond to the horizon of unconformity or previous river bottom indicates that the gold grains were separated from quartz veins. Along rivers often pebbles and clay layers just over or 10 to 20cm above the current waterlevel are recognized. The occurrence of gold in the conglomeratic layer was frequently confirmed during geochemical exploration. Since the conglomeratic layer was old stream sediments of Quaternary, it can be assumed that deposition of golds was controlled by shape of river floor, speed and shape of river flow, and distance from the source rock. Taran area and northern Takaoi area based on the all data are recommended as the promising areas.
