An accurate substructural synthesis method including random responses synthesis, frequency-response functions synthesis and mid-order modes synthesis is developed based on rigorous substructure description, dynamic condensation and coupling. An entire structure can firstly be divided into several substructures according to different functions, geometric and dynamic characteristics. Substructural displacements are expressed exactly by retained mid-order fixed-interfacial normal modes and residual constraint modes. Substructural interfacial degree-of-freedoms are eliminated by interfacial displacements compatibility and forces equilibrium between adjacent substructures. Then substructural mode vibration equations are coupled to form an exact-condensed synthesized structure equation, from which structural mid-order modes are calculated accurately. Furthermore, substructural frequency-response function equations are coupled to yield an exact-condensed synthesized structure vibration equation in frequency domain, from which the generalized structural frequency-response functions are obtained. Substructural frequency-response functions are calculated separately by using the generalized frequency-response functions, which can be assembled into an entire-structural frequency-response function matrix. Substructural power spectral density functions are expressed by the exact-synthesized substructural frequency-response functions, and substructural random responses such as correlation functions and mean-square responses can be calculated separately. The accuracy and capacity of the proposed substructure synthesis method is verified by numerical examples.

An analysis is presented for the primary resonance of a clamped-hinged beam, which occurs when the frequency of excitation is near one of the natural frequencies, .omega.$_{n}$. Three mode interactions, .omega.$_{2}$=3.omega.$_{1}$, and .omega.$_{3}$=.omega.$_{1}$+2.omega.$_{2}$, are considered and their influence on the response is studied. The case of two mode interaction, .omega.$_{2}$=3.omega.$_{1}$, is also considered in order to compare it with the case of three mode interactions. The straight beam experiencing mid-plane stretching is governed by a nonlinear partial differential equation. By using Galerkin's method the governing equation is reduced to a system of nonautonomous nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The method of multiple scales is applied to obtain steady-state responses of the system. Results of numerical investions show that there exists no significant difference between both modal interactions.
From the equation of motion of a "bare" non-uniform beam (without any concentrated elements), an eigenfunction in term of four unknown integration constants can be obtained. When the last eigenfunction is substituted into the three compatible equations, one force-equilibrium equation, one governing equation for each attaching point of the concentrated element, and the boundary equations for the two ends of the beam, a matrix equation of the form [B]{C} = {0} is obtained. The solution of |B| = 0 (where ${\mid}{\cdot}{\mid}$ denotes a determinant) will give the "exact" natural frequencies of the "constrained" beam (carrying any number of point masses or/and concentrated springs) and the substitution of each corresponding values of {C} into the associated eigenfunction for each attaching point will determine the corresponding mode shapes. Since the order of [B] is 4n + 4, where n is the total number of point masses and concentrated springs, the "explicit" mathematical expression for the existing approach becomes lengthily intractable if n > 2. The "numerical assembly method"(NAM) introduced in this paper aims at improving the last drawback of the existing approach. The "exact"solutions in this paper refer to the numerical results obtained from the "continuum" models for the classical analytical approaches rather than from the "discretized" ones for the conventional finite element methods.

Based on the reliability theory, the risk assessment of steel beams is performed by the determination of failure probability. In the calculation, bending, shearing and combined (bending + shearing) modes are examined. The resistance and the loads on the beam are assumed to be normal distribution. To investigate the failure probability changes, total load applied at the mid span of beam is divided into 1 to 1 and 1 to 2 ratio and then these divided loads are placed on the trisected points on beam. The change of boundary conditions at beam ends are also included in the investigation. It shows that failure is governed by the combined mode for the present beams and the second order bound analysis of failure probability is not crucial. On the whole failure probability decreases with increasing end restraints at the beam ends with some exception.

In this paper, we investigated the method of compensation for optical pulse shape distortion due to both chromatic dispersion and SPM(self phase modulation) in a single mode fiber We selected MSSI(mid-span spectral inversion) as compensation method using OPC(optical phase conjugator). We used EOP(eye-opening penalty) parameter in order to evaluate the efficiency of waveform distortion compensation. In this paper, we induced optimum pump power level in optical phase conjugator through analytic method of computer simulation. And we investigated input signal power range being able to maintain stable reception performance under the condition of optimum pump power. We verified the possibility of high performance optical transmission system realization through the inducement and application of optimum pump power, input signal power and in-line amplifier spacing, because power control is important in the compensation for optical pulse distortion.

The compression or tension-controlled failure mode of concrete beams prestressed with unbonded FRP tendons is governed by the relative amount of prestressing tendon to the balanced one. Explicit assessment to determine the balanced reinforcement ratio of a beam with unbonded tendons (${\rho}^U_{pfb}$) is difficult because it requires a priori knowledge of the deformed beam geometry in order to evaluate the unbonded tendon strain. In this study, a theoretical evaluation of ${\rho}^U_{pfb}$ is presented based on a concept of three equivalent rectangular curvature blocks for simply supported concrete beams internally prestressed with unbonded carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendons. The equivalent curvature blocks were iteratively refined to closely simulate beam rotations at the supports, mid-span beam deflection, and member-dependent strain of the unbonded tendon at the ultimate state. The model was verified by comparing its predictions with the test results. Parametric studies were performed to examine the effects of various parameters on ${\rho}^U_{pfb}$.

Fracture tests were carried out in order to investigate the flexural behavior of SFRC (Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete) structures. Sixty three SFRC beams were used in the tests, the fracture mode, the relationships between loading and strains, and the relationships between loading and mid-span deflections of the beams were observed under the three point bending loading. From the test results, the effects of steel fiber contents and a/h ratio on the concrete flexural behavior were studied, and the stress intensity factors and the flexural strength of SFRC beams were calculated. According to the results of regression analysis, predicting formulas for the flexural strength of SFRC beams are also suggested.

This manuscript presents impacts of gradation of material functions and axial load functions on critical buckling loads and mode shapes of functionally graded (FG) thin and thick beams by using higher order shear deformation theory, for the first time. Volume fractions of metal and ceramic materials are assumed to be distributed through a beam thickness by both sigmoid law and symmetric power functions. Ceramic-metal-ceramic (CMC) and metal-ceramic-metal (MCM) symmetric distributions are proposed relative to mid-plane of the beam structure. The axial compressive load is depicted by constant, linear, and parabolic continuous functions through the axial direction. The equilibrium governing equations are derived by using Hamilton's principles. Numerical differential quadrature method (DQM) is developed to discretize the spatial domain and covert the governing variable coefficients differential equations and boundary conditions to system of algebraic equations. Algebraic equations are formed as a generalized matrix eigenvalue problem, that will be solved to get eigenvalues (buckling loads) and eigenvectors (mode shapes). The proposed model is verified with respectable published work. Numerical results depict influences of gradation function, gradation parameter, axial load function, slenderness ratio and boundary conditions on critical buckling loads and mode-shapes of FG beam structure. It is found that gradation types have different effects on the critical buckling. The proposed model can be effective in analysis and design of structure beam element subject to distributed axial compressive load, such as, spacecraft, nuclear structure, and naval structure.
In order to elucidate sedimentation processes and depositional environments in transitional area between continental shelf and coastal zone, sedimentologic study has been done with 84 surface sediments sampled in nearshore/offshore off the mid-western coast of the Korean Peninsula for 3 years (1996${\sim}$1999). The surface sediment can be classified into 4 facies (gravelly sand, sand, silty sand and sandy silt). Mean grain size, sorting, skewenss and kurtosis varies -0.39${\sim}7.82{\Phi}$, 0.36${\sim}4.68{\Phi}$, -0.38${\sim}$0.86, -1.56${\sim}$3.43, respectively. The textural parameters show a finer-grained and poorly-sorted trend shoreward, northward and southward from the central part of the study area. The positively-skewed distribution and relationship of each textural parameters indicate a tide-dominated depositional environment. According to C/M diagram, there are 3 different domains (mode A, B, C) of sediment transport mode. The northern part is characterized by bedload transport (mode A) and represents co-influence of wave and tide, whereas domain C in the southern part is controlled by uniform suspension transport (mode C), correlating with sandy-silt area. In the broad middle area, transport processes are complex (the mixture of bedload, graded suspension and uniform suspension; mode B). Hence, the subdivision depositional environments of this study area may be classified by 3 depositional environments dependent on the interplay of sediment supplies from river, relict sediments and hydrologic conditions. In results, the nearshore and offshore areas are thus characterized as a mixing zone between coastal terrigenous sediments and relict sediments in the continental shelf by complex processes (tide, wave and river flow). These sedimentation processes play an important role in producing distinct sedimentologic features in the transitional zone linking coastal and shelfal areas.

In this paper, a scheme for the evaluation of variability in the eigen-modes of functionally graded material(FGM) beams is proposed within the framework of perturbation-based stochastic analysis. As a random parameter, the spatially varying elastic modulus of FGM along the axial direction at the mid-surface of the beam is chosen, and the thru-thickness variation of the elastic modulus is assumed to follow the original form of exponential variation. In deriving the formulation, the first order Taylor expansion on the eigen-modes is employed. As an example, a simply supported FGM beam having symmetric elastic modulus with respect to the mid-surface is chosen. Monte Carlo analysis is also performed to check if the proposed scheme gives reasonable outcomes. From the analyses it is found that the two schemes give almost identical results of the mean and standard deviation of eigen-modes. With the propose scheme, the standard deviation shape of respective eigen-modes can be evaluated easily. The deviated mode shape is found to have one more zero-slope points than the mother modes shapes, irrespective of order of modes. The amount of deviation from the mean is found to have larger values for the higher modes than the lower modes.
