This study was conducted to evaluate the flowering characteristics of 22 soybean (Glycine max Merrill) varieties of North Korea and classify the flowering group by the flowering date. The flowering date and the days required for flowering with the different planting times on May 31, June 19, June 30, July 3, and July 4 were investigated at the agricultural experimental field of Korea University for three years from 2017 to 2019. The flowering date and the days for flowering of "Yeonpungkong", an early maturing soybean cultivar of Korea, were July 18 and 48 days, respectively, at the planting time of May 31, those of "Daewonkong", a mid-late maturing cultivar, were July 30 and 60 days, respectively. Based on the flowering dates of "Yeonpungkong" and "Daewonkong", North Korean soybean varieties were classified into six flowering groups. Eight North Korean soybean varieties had the flowering dates earlier than "Yeonpungkong", including "Brekkhat" classified into the early flowering group. The range of flowering date was July 2 to 15 at planting time of May 31. Twelve North Korean soybean varieties had flowering dates similar to or later than "Daewonkong", including "Chang Dan Bac Mok" classified into the mid-late flowering group. The range of flowering date was July 24 to 30 at the planting time of May 31. For flowering response to environmental stimulus, all of the mid-late flowering varieties of North Korea responded to "photosensitive or day-length" for flowering reaction. The early flowering varieties were divided by "photosensitive" response and "temperature" response variety.
To find out the influence of different rice varieties on the emission of methane in the soil and the exudation of carbohydrates from root, the experiment was conducted on a fine silty, mesic family of Aeric Fluventinc Haplaquepts (Jeonbug series). The varities of rise involved one early maturing variety of Japonica type(namweon) and three mid-to-late maturing varieties of Japonica type and one mid-to-late variety of Indica${\times}$Japonica crossed. The methane flux over the rice canopy was measured according to the closed chamber method modified by Shin and the methane concentration in the soil was measured using porous cup installed in the soil. The carbohydrate exudates from root were measured under nutrient solution culture. It was found that the methane flux tended to be lower in early maturing varieties than in the mid-to-late maturing varieties, lower in indica${\times}$Japonica crossed variety than in Japonica type varieties. There was positive correlation between the number of tillers and the weight of roots of rice plant and methane flux. The correlation, however, tended to be greater between the weight of roots and methane flux. There was no significant difference in the concentration of methane in the soil under different varieties of rice, excepting one variety, Kehwa under which methane concentration was highest. In case of carbohydrate exudation, early maturing variety tended to be higher than other varieties, although the opposite was the case in methane flux.
These studies were conducted to investigate overwintering forms and adult population fluctuation in field condition, and life cycle in field-cage condition of diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.). Plutella xylostella overwintered as all the stages of eggs, larvae, pupae and adults in southern region of Korea. The occurrence which adult moths were attracted by light trap at 5-day intervals, reached their peaks in May, mid-June to mid-July, and late September to early November, and fell in late July to mid-September. Under field-cage condition, they occurred 10-11 generations a year and the period of adult emergence from egg was 11-18 days in July and August, 19-23 days in June and September, 28-34 days in April, May and October, and about 50-100 days in other months. And the longevities of adults were 4-11 days in summer, 7-17 days in spring and fall. A number of eggs laid by individual female ranged from 50 to 240. The females laid more eggs in spring and fall than they did in summer. The period of developmental stages under field-cage conditions was 2-3 days for eggs, 7-8 days for larvae and 4-6 days for pupae in July and August; 4-5 days for eggs, 3-12 days for larvae and 6-8 days for pupae in June and September; 6-18 days for eggs, 13-20 days for larvae and 8-14 days for pupae in March, April, May and October; and 12-40 days for eggs, 50-100 days for larvae, and about 20 days for pupae in winter.

The corn is mostly planted in mid-April in single-cropping silage system if possible, however, in a double-cropping silage system, the corn planting date is delayed until after the mid-May. The objective of this study was to evaluate agronomic characteristics and forage performance of the eight government recommended corn hybrids for silage at two dates of planting. Split-plot design replicated three times was used, that is, main plots were planting dates, sub-plots were eight hybrids at Suweon in 1997. Days from planting to silking of optimum planting was 84 days and that of late was 69 days. The difference in silking day among the hybrids was 6 days at optimum planting and 2 days at late planting. Plant height of optimum planting corn was higher than that of late one, however, ear height and stem diameter of optimum planting were lower than those of late planting corn. Among the corn hybrids tested, plant heights of 'P3156' and 'P3163' were higher than those of the other hybrids. Ear height of 'DK713' was the lowest among the corn hybrids and stem diameter of 'P3394' was thicker than that of the other hybrids. European corn borer(ECB) damage(16.6%) at optimum planting was lower than that(49.9%) of late, however, there were no significant ECB damage differences among the corn hybrids tested. Whole plant dry matter(DM) contents of 'P3525', 'P3394' and 'P3352' hybrids were higher than those of the other corn hybrids at harvest. Ear percentages of the total dry matter(DM) of 'P3394' and 'P3156' were higher than those of the other corn hybrids. Dry matter(DM) and total digestible nutrients(TDN) yields(19,696 and 14,621kg/ha) at optimum planting were higher than those (17,163 and 12,570kg/ha) of late planting, while there were no significant differences in DM and TDN yields among the corn hybrids tested. And those hybrids with greater proportion of grain in the whole plant have higher DM and TDN yields. Correlation coefficients for days from planting to silking with DM and TDN yields were $0.84^{**}$ and $0.87^{**}$, and those for ear percent were $0.86^{**}$ and $0.87^{**}$. Results of this study indicate that optimum planting date(15 April) is better than late planting date(16 May) in agronomic characteristics and forage production of silage corn. Days from planting to silking and ear percent as welI as other characters are important factors screening the corn hybrid for silage.

In this study, we developed a method to determine the flood-limited water levels of agricultural reservoirs, considering both their irrigation and flood control functions. Irrigation safety and flood safety indices were defined to be applied to various reservoirs, allowing for a comprehensive assessment of the irrigation and flood control properties. Seasonal flood-limited water level scenarios were established to represent the temporal characteristics of rainfall and agricultural water supply and the safety indices were analyzed according to these scenarios. The optimal scenarios were derived using a schematic solution based on Pareto front analysis. The method was applied to Obong, Yedang, and Myogok reservoirs, and the results showed that the characteristics of each reservoir were well represented in the safety indices. The irrigation safety of Obong reservoir was found to be significantly influenced by the late-stage flood-limited water level, while those of Yedang and Myogok reservoir were primarily affected by the early and mid-stage flood-limited water levels. The values of irrigation safety and flood safety indices for each scenario were plotted as points on the coordinate plane, and the optimal flood-limited water levels were selected from the Pareto front. The storage ratio of the optimal flood-limited water levels for the early, mid, and late stages were 65-70%, 70%, and 75% for Obong reservoir, 75%, 70-75%, and 65-70% for Yedang reservoir, and 75-80%, 70%, and 50% for Myogok reservoir. We expect that the method developed in this study will facilitate efficient reservoir operations.

The heading response of 40 genotypes, originated from South Korea, North Korea, and northern China, was tested under the temperature and day-length conditions of thirteen major rice production area in North Korea, with aims to select adaptable varieties to the given environment and crop period for each region. To simulate regional environment, seven-day mean temperature with 10℃ daily temperature range and day-length for each region were imposed at a weekly interval in the walk-in phytotrons. Olbyeo1, Olbyeo2 and Sonbong9 originated from North Korea, Kenjiandao3 and Nongdae3 from northern China, and Joun from South Korea demonstrated the earliest heading stage depending on the regional environment. Thirty-four varieties reached heading stage within the regional safe marginal heading date (SMHD) under Haeju and Sariwon conditions while 16-17 varieties reached the stage under Wonsan, Changjon, Supung, and Yongyon environment. Some of the middle and mid-late maturing varieties originated from South Korea could reach heading stage within SMHD under the temperature and day-length conditions of Kaesong, Haeju, Sariwon, Nampo, and Pyongyang located in west-southern plain. Majority of early maturing varieties, but not middle or mid-late ones, showed heading stage within SMHD under the conditions of Singye, Anju, Kusong and Sinuiju. Only some early maturing varieties demonstrated heading stage within SMHD under Yongyon, Changjon and Wonsan environment. These results provide basic information on the varieties able to complete their normal life cycle under the regional environment in North Korea. It it further suggested that yield performance of the selected varieties for each region in this study be tested to select high yielding rice varieties adaptable to North Korean environment.
Strain SA72 was isolated from Jeot-gal and identified as producer of a bacteriocin, which showed some bactericidal activity against Lactobacillus delbrueckii ATCC 4797. Strain SA72 was tentatively identified as Lactococcus lactis according to the AOI test. Lactococcus lactis SA72 showed a broad spectrum of microorganisms, tested by the modified deferred method. The activity of lacticion SA72, named tentatively as a bacteriocin produced by Lactococcus lactis SA72, was detected during the mid-lon growth phase, reached a maximum during the early stationary phase, and then declined after the late stationary phase. Lacticin SA72 also showed a relatively broad spectrum of activity against non-pathogenic and pathogenic microorganisms when assessed by the spot-on-lawn method. Its anitimicrobial activity on sensitive indicator cells disappeared completely by protease XIV treatment. The inhibitory activity of lacticin SA72 remained after treatment for 15 min at $121^{\circ}C$, 문 was stable in a pH range of 2.0 to 9.0 and all organic solvents examined. It demonstrated a typical bactericidal mode of inhibition against Lactobacillus delbrueckii ATCC 4797. The apparent molecular mass of lacticin SA72 was in the region of 3-3.5 kDa, determined by SDS-PAGE.
This study examined the relationship between parent-child relationship experiences in childhood and adulthood, and individual development and psychological well-being in mid to later life using structural equation modeling with data from 1,882 parents who have at least one child over 18 years old. Findings indicated that receiving more affectionate parenting in childhood was associated with greater generativity development, more positive parental experiences with one's own children, and better psychological well-being in mid to later adulthood. In addition, the effects of received parenting in childhood on psychological well-being after midlife were partially mediated by parental experiences with adult children and generativity development. These findings suggest that early experiences with parents in childhood continuously influence psychological well-being in adulthood through their impact on concurrent family experiences. However, early influences can be redirected through adult experiences too. These findings have implications for the development of intervention programs aimed at promoting volunteer work for older adults, as well as for practitioners who work with families and individuals who are having problems.

The global regulator, GacS (global antibiotic and cyanide sensor kinase), was required for the increased resistance to hydrogen peroxide occurring as cultures of the rhizobacterium, P. chlororaphis O6, matured. Specific stationary-phase peroxidase and catalase isozymes were absent in the GacS mutant, whereas a manganese-superoxide dismutase isozyme was expressed earlier and to a great extent than wild type. In the wild type cell, transcript accumulation of rpoS was higher in late logarithmic-phase cells than cells from mid logarithmic- or stationary-phase. Transcripts from rpoS in the GacS mutant were reduced in each of these growth phases compared to the wild type expression. The down stream sequence from rpoS lacked sequences encoding a small RNA, rsmZ, found in other pseudomonads and implicated in control of genes activated by the GacS system. These findings suggest that GacS-mediated regulation of RpoS plays role in control of oxidative stress in P. chlororaphis O6 by as yet an unknown mechanism.
Introduction : Kim-Young-hun (김영훈), with the pen name of Cheong-Gang (청강), was born in the late 19th century. He led an active life as an eminent Korean traditional medical scholar until the mid-20th century. He opened a Korean traditional medical clinic in the heart of Seoul and kept records of his clinical experiences. Methods : Filing of clinical records: Cheong-Gang's records, at present owned by the College of Oriental Medicine, Kyunghee University (경희대학교 한의과대학), are classified into prescription charts and medical examination charts. In this study, only the medical examination charts were filed. Results : The total number of the medical examination charts from 1915 until 1974 is 393, and the titles are sorted according to date. This paper is the first filing research on the medical examination charts.
