This study was performed to investigate softening methods of raw sea tangle for development of sea tangle processing products and intermediate materials. In examination of various softening agents, it was revealed that 0.3% sodium triphosphate was best effective on softening with heat treatment. Softerness and spreadability of sea tangle treated with sodium triphosphate and heat treatment were indicated to be better than the others. In blanching studies, microwave was extremely effective on softening and the effect was as follows: microwave>steaming>boiling water in softening order. In the case of adding 0.3% sodium triphosphate in blanching treatment, there was synergy effectiveness on softening. The color change of treated sea tangle was significantly different at p<0.05 depending on blanching method and addition amount of the agent.
Conventional processing of biological materials including nematode parasites for scanning electron microscopy includes fixation with glutaraldehyde and osmium, followed by dehydration in an ascending grade of ethanol, and finally freeze drying. This procedure takes about 8 to 12 h depending on the characteristics of samples. Microwave irradiation of 2,450 MHz enhance the action of cross-linking fixatives and can greatly accelerate various stages of tissue processing. In this study, samples of nematode parasites, Setaria digitata, were fixed by a combination of conventional chemical fixation and the microwave irradiation during the process. The microwave irradiation was also incorporated in the serial dehydration process with ethanol. The complete procedure from the initial fixation to the completion of dehydration with ethanol was reduced to 1 h with good preservation of the ultrastructural details of the specimens.
Microwave characteristics of the system (Zr, Sn)$TiO_4$, ceramics within composition range X between 0.2 and 0.35 were investigated at 8GHz. For the improvement properties of (Zr, Sn)$TiO_4$, system, $Ta_2O_5$ and $WO_3$ addition in the range of 0.5 to 2.0wt% were investigated.

The plasma density is an essential plasma parameter describing plasma physics. Furthermore, it affects the throughput and uniformity of plasma processing (etching, deposition, ashing, etc). Therefore, a novel technique for plasma density measurement has been attracting considerable attention. Microwave probe is a promising diagnostic technique. Various type of cutoff, hairpin, impedance, transmission, and absorption probes have been developed and investigated. Recently, based on the basic type of probes, modified flat probe (curling and multipole probes), have been developing for in situ processing plasma monitoring. There is a need for comparative study between the probes. It can give some hints on choosing the reliable probe and application of the probes. In this presentation, we make attempt of numerical study of different kinds of microwave probes. Characteristics of frequency spectrum from probes were analyzed by using three-dimensional electromagnetic simulation. The plasma density, obtained from the spectrum, was compared with simulation input plasma density. The different microwave probe behavior with changes of plasma density, sheath and pressure were found. To confirm the result experimentally, we performed the comparative experiment between cutoff and hairpin probes. The sheath and collision effects are corrected for each probe. The results were reasonably interpreted based on the above simulation.

Effect of microwave heat-treatment processing on the electrical conductivity and crystallization behavior for the $Li_2O-2SiO_2$-xCuO glasses with various CuO contents was compared with that of conventional heat-treatment processing. The electrical conductivities of samples heat-treated at $500^{\circ}C$ by different heat-treatment processing were increased with increasing CuO content and higher electrical conductivities were obtained from microwave heat-treated samples. From the result of XRD analyses, microwave heat-treatment processing enhanced the degree of crystallization in the formation of $Li_2Si_2O_5, Li_2Cu_5$($Si_2O_7)_2$, and $Li_2Cu_2O_3$ crystalline phases. The electrical conductivities of $Li_2O-2SiO_2$-1.3CuO (30 mol% CuO) glass heat-treated at $500^{\circ}C$ for 30 min under conventional and microwave heat-treatment processing were $0.11{\times}10^{-4}(\Omega \textrm {cm})^{-1}$ and $0.68{\times}10^{-4}(\Omega \textrm {cm})^{-1}$ at room temperature, respectively. It was speculated that microwave energy enhanced the degree of crystallization and increased electrical conductivity in the samples.

Microwaves belong to the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum with frequencies between 300MHz and 300GHz.$\^$1)/ In microwave processing, the energy is delivered directly to materials through molecular interaction with the electromagnetic field. This result in rapid heating throughout the material thickness with the reduced thermal gradients. If microwave is applied to fibrous materials, it can be reduced processing time. (omitted)
We report on the frequency response of microwave signal processing networks using optical fiber circuits. Microwave frequency rejection filters using Mach-Zehnder interferometer and Fabry-Perot interferometer are modelled theoretically and tested experimentally. Graphical representation method provides a simple tool for computating single mode fiber delay-line microwave filters. The calculated results are in good agreement with experimental results. A 36dB microwave frequency rejection filter is also demonstrated.
The effects of sugars and heating methods on the sugar infilteration, hardness, color and organoleptic characteristics were investigated for quality improvement of sugared chestnuts. Among the tested sugars, isomaltooligosugar was the most effective on the rate of sugar infilteration. High temperature increased the rate of sugar infilteration during sugaring process, but color and flavor were deteriorated at 9$0^{\circ}C$. The most suitable temperature for sugaring process was 7$0^{\circ}C$. The product sugared with fructooligosugar recoreded the highest score in hardness, odor and preference than any other sugars tested and increased the rate of sugar infilteration when mixed with sugar at same amount. The changes of soluble solids in chestnuts boiled with microwave oven were ranged from 18。Brix to 32。Brix, while chestnuts heated in general were from 18。Brix to 28。Brix. Chestnuts boiled with microwave heating were sugared rapidly. The hardness of boiled and sugared chestnuts was lower when treated with microwave than with general heating. Hunter's L and b value of sugared chestnut treated with microwave decreased during processing but a value somewhat increased.
In home-style microwave oven, silica-Al powder mixture was ignited among pellets and combustion wave-front propagated to produce Si+AIN+Al2O3 as resultant phases under N2 atmosphere. Without cooling pro-cedure the resultant phases of Si+AIN+Al2O3 continously absorbed microwave and were heated to be syn-thesized into sialon phases. This synthesis rate of sialon phases from silica-Al powder mixture in home-style microwave oven was higher than that in conventional furnace, and total processing time was around 1 hour, which could save energy and cost.

Conductive microspheres with a density of 0.2 g/cc were fabricated by electroless silver plating for application to the light-weighted microwave absorbers. The silver plating was conducted with the variation of plating conditions (sensitizing condition, $AgNO_3$, concentration, amount of reducing agent). Specimens have very low electro-resistivity. Under an optimum processing condition, conductive microspheres with uniform silver plating layer can be produced. Rubber-sphere composites were fabricated and their microwave absorbing properties were measured by HP8722D Network Analyzer. It was found that the lower the electrical resistance of microsphere, the better the microwave absorbing properties. Feasibility of microwave absorbers using this microspheres can be demonstrated with the result of microwave reflection loss of -15 dB and thickness of 1.44 mm.
