Purpose: Densification and mechanical properties of dental zirconia ceramics were evaluated by different sintering methods. Materials and Methods: Y-TZP zirconia block(Kavo $Everest^{(R)}$ ZS blank, Kavo dental GmbH, Bismarckring, Germany) was used in this study. Sintering were performed in heat sintering furnace and microwave sintering furnace, and then experimented and analyzed on a change in densification according to the sintering time, a change in densification according to thickness, flexural strength and micro-structure in zirconia specimens. Results: Microwave sintering was very effective in considerable mechanical properties such as flexural strength and bulk density was drastically increased than conventional electric heating method. It is also shown that microwave sintering time was faster and more economical than common method to be present in qualities which equal or exceed. Conclusion: It will be important to seek the accurate sintering condition of dental zirconia by microwave sintering method and the continuous research is necessary for the study of relationship between sintering methods and mechanical properties.
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of different reheating methods on the quality characteristics of precooked ground pork patties with different combinations of salt (1, 2%) and phosphate (0, 0.3%). The cooking and reheating methods used were the electric grill and the microwave oven. The cooking method and the addition of phosphate had detectable effects on the quality characteristics of ground pork patties. The reheating rate by microwave oven was faster than by electric grill, and decreased with increases in salt and the addition of phosphate. Cooking loss and reduction in patty diameter after reheating by microwave oven were higher than by electric grill, and these values decreased with increasing of salt/phosphate levels. The pH of patties with added phosphate was significantly higher than patties without phosphate, and no significant difference in pH was observed among patties reheated by each method. The patties reheated by electric grill had higher moisture contents than those reheated by electric grill, and the addition of phosphate resulted in higher moisture contents. The hardness of patties reheated by electric grill was lower than patties reheated by microwave oven, and the addition of phosphate increased the hardness with both reheating methods.
The microwave tissue coagulator was originally used for hemostasis in the hepatic surgery, which is effectively applied in the endoscopic surgery such as the hemostasis of gastric ulcer or tumor bleeding, stenosis relieving of esophageal or rectal stenosis and tumor reduction in inoperable early cancer cases. We experienced the good result of the microwave tissue coagulation therapy in the patient with the restenosis of esophagogastrostomy. The patient was 67 year-old female, who was admitted due to the lye stricture of esophagus for 40 years. We made the lower esophagectomy and the esophagogastrostomy with the upper intact esophagus in the right thorax. But the restenosis occurred at the esophagogastrostomy site because of the polypoid mucosal protrusion at one month after operation. We applied the microwave tissue coagulator 3 times with 6 day interval under esophagoscopy and the good symptomatic and endoscopic relief was alleviated. We think that the microwave tissue coagulation is a very convenient and advisable method in the case of restenosis after esophageal surgery.
In the reaction of gas-solid phases, the microwave energy plays a role as a catalyst, because it causes friction between adjacent molecules and enables an unique characteristics of interior heating of the materials. When the dipole gases are adsorbed inside of the pore of carbon materials, the gases are decomposed by the microwave energy and reacted with the carbon atoms. Using this principle, we could make the activated carbon from coconut shell within 20 minute, and this residence time for activation is about 1/16 of rotary kiln. The BET surface area of activated carbon made by microwave is about $1,100m^2/g$ similar to conventional method of rotary kiln. In this study, the power of microwave generator was 400~1000W, and the gas for activation was steam mainly.
The thermal death kinetics of the Black timber bark beetle, Xylosandrus germanus, was investigated to develop a heat treatment for control of infested wood packing materials used to export goods. To determine the feasibility of microwave irradiation as an alternative control method, laboratory experiments irradiating wooden blocks of Douglas fir ($200{\times}200{\times}250mm$), which were artificially infested with adults, with 2.45 GHz of microwave energy. All (100%) Ambrosia beetle adults were killed by both hot water treatments and microwave irradiation at $52^{\circ}C$ and $58^{\circ}C$, respectively. Probit analyses estimated the internal wood temperature required to produce Probit (0.99) efficacy to be $64.7^{\circ}C$ (95% CI $62.4-69.9^{\circ}C$) at one minute after microwave treatment.
As HMR (home meal replacement) food market grows rapidly, a new packaging with more HMR specialized functions is highly required to promote consumers' convenience. A susceptor is defined as a material generating heat by absorbing electromagnetic energy such typically as radiofrequency or microwave radiation. In microwave cooking, susceptors are made of conductive metal thin film deposited on paper or plastic sheet and have generally been used to help crispen or brown foods by converting microwave energy into heat. This mini review article deals with current status of microwave susceptor packaging including commercial products, technical theory, types of susceptor and a test method for heating performance.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the physical propertise and determine whether three were any differences in the amount of porosity of the denture base resins cured by microwave irradiation and conventional water bath heating. The resins used in this study were K-33 resin and Acron MC resin. The properties selected were transverse strength, Knoop hardness, and density. A ten-power eyepiece and scanning electron microscope(Magnification of ${\times}$ 30and ${\times}$150)were used to examine the specimens for porosity. Through analyses of the data from this study, the following conclusions were obtained. 1. Microwave energy can be effectively use dtopolymerize poly(methylmethacrylate) denture base resins. 2. In the transverse strength, K-33 resin cured by microwave irradiation was the first highest, water bath cured K-33 resin the second, microwave cured Acron MC resin the third, water bath cured Acron MC resin the fourth. 3. In the Knoop hardness, K-33 resin cured by microwave irradiation was the first hardest, water bath cured K-33 resin the second, water bath cured Acron MC resin the third, microwave cured Acron MC resin the the fourth. 4. No significant difference was found between the density of resin denture bases polymerized by either method. 5. K-33 resin showed the most porosity for the microwave curing. But there was no significant difference in the Acron MC resin and other curing method.
Background: In this study, microwave extraction was used, which is an effective method to extract useful bioactive substances as it requires low quantities of solvent and short time periods. The aim of this study was to determine the optimal extraction conditions for Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. Methods and Results: The independent variables were ethanol concentration, microwave power, and extraction time, each of which had five levels. The dependent variables were total polyphenol and total flavonoid content, and DPPH radical scavenging activity. To determine the optimal extraction conditions for bioactive compounds, a response surface methodology was employed. Contour maps were generated from polynomial equations. The optimal conditions were then assumed by superimposing these contour maps. Based on the resulting graph, the optimal microwave extraction conditions for Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb were determined as 42 - 48% ethanol concentration, 240 - 280W microwave power, and 13 - 20 min of extraction time. Conclusions: Ethanol concentration had a significant effect on microwave extraction, in terms of total polyphenol and total flavonoid content, as well as DPPH radical scavenging activity. Microwave power and extraction time influenced the total polyphenol content, but not the total flavonoid content or the DPPH radical scavenging activity.
This letter presents a new approach to synthesize the resonator filters of an arbitrary topology. This method employs an optimization method based on the relation between the polynomial coefficients of the transfer function and those of the $S_{21}$ from the coupling matrix. Therefore, this new method can also be applied to self-equalized filters that were not considered in the conventional optimization methods. Two microwave filters, a symmetric 4-pole filter with four transmission zeros (TZs) and an asymmetric 8-pole filter with seven TZs, are synthesized using the present method for validation. Excellent agreement between the response of the transfer function and that of the synthesized $S_{21}$ from the coupling matrix is shown.
With a growing concern about the state of infrastructure worldwide, the demand for the development of reliable nondestructive testing techniques (NDT) is ever increasing. Among possible NDT techniques, microwave method is proven to be effective in fast and non-contact inspection of concrete structures and inclusions inside concrete. It is also found that the microwave method has a potential in detecting the delamination between fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) plate and concrete. On the other hand, ultrasonic method can be another way to find the delamination. In this paper, the research work needed for the development of a reliable microwave method and ultrasonic method is studied in the measurements of concrete specimens reinforced with FRP. Concrete specimens are made with FRP and artificial delamination inside. A microwave measurement system with hom antennas with high center frequency and broad frequency bandwidth are used to image inside concrete specimens for the detection of debonding between concrete and FRP. Also, ultrasonic method is used for the same condition. Both results are compared with each other.
