Extraction characteristics of solid Cheonggukjang and the functional properties of corresponding extracts were monitored by the response surface methodology (RSM). The maximum extraction yield of 12.08% was obtained under the specific extraction conditions, such as microwave power of 132.40 W, ratio of solvent to sample content of 7.57 g/mL and extraction time of 14.11 min. The maximum electron donating ability (EDA) was found as 33.53% at the conditions of 113.26 W microwave power, 16.39 g/mL of ratio of solvent to sample content and 12.67 min extraction time. The maximum superoxide dismutase (SOD) -like activity was 89.62% under the extraction conditions of 61.82 W, 17.06 g/mL and 9.03 min. Based on superimposition of three dimensional RSM with respect to extraction yield, electron donating ability and SOD-like activity obtained under the various extraction conditions, the optimum ranges of extraction conditions were found to be microwave power of $75{\sim}140W$, ratio of solvent to sample content of $3{\sim}12g/mL$ and extraction time of $1{\sim}11min$, respectively.
This study attempted to find optimum extract range of active ingredient for barley sprouts (Hordeum vulgare L.). Extracts from Hordeum vulgare L. were made by microwave extraction method and total polyphenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), DPPH radical scavenging activity (DPPH) were measured with extract of Hordeum vulgare L.. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to a extraction process, and central composite design (CCD) was also used for this process to examine the optimum condition. Independent variables ($X_n$) are concentration of ethanol ($X_1$: 0, 25, 50, 75, 100%), microwave power ($X_2$: 60, 120, 180, 240, 300 W), extraction time ($X_3$: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 min). Dependent variables ($Y_n$) are TPC ($Y_1$), TFC ($Y_2$), DPPH radical scavenging ($Y_3$). It is formed by sixteen conditions to extract. The $R^2$ value of dependent variables is ranged from 0.90 to 0.97 (p<0.05). Experiments values within the optimal range (40% of ethanol concentration, 120 W of microwave power, 18 min of extraction time) were 3.74 mg GAE/g (TPC), 3.00 mg RE/g (TFC), 35.43% (DPPH), respectively. Under the optimized conditions, predicted value showed no significant difference comparing with the experimental values.

Response surface methodology was employed to optimize extraction conditions for finding the maximizing the functional properties of roasted Pleurotus eryngii. Based on the central composite design, independent variables were ethanol concentration ($0{\sim}100%$), extraction time ($1{\sim}9$ min) and microwave power ($25{\sim}125$ W). Soluble solid content, electron donating ability and nitrite-scavenging ability were mainly affected by ethanol concentration, but ACE inhibition activity was largely affected by extraction time. The optimum ranges of extraction conditions resulting from superimposing the response surface were predicted to be ethanol concentration ($25{\sim}50%$), extraction time ($3{\sim}9$ min) and microwave power ($80{\sim}125$ W). Total protein and total phenolic compound content of optimal extracts were 45.80 mg/g and 7.42 mg/g, respectively. In phenolic compounds of roasted Pleurotus eryngii extracts, protocatechuic acid was the highest concentration at 1226.32 ${\mu}g/g$, followed by salicylic acid, catechin, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, caffeic acid, coumaric acid and hesperidin.

Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to microwave-assisted process (MAP) extraction for effective components from Mosla dianthera M. Microwave power (2,450 MHz, 0-160 W) and extraction time (1-5 min) were used as independent variables ($X_i$) for central composite design to yield 10 different extraction conditions. Optimum conditions were predicted for dependent variables of $75\%$ ethanol extracts, such as total yield($Y_1$), total phenolics($Y_2$), total flavonoids($Y_3$), and electron donation ability($Y_4$, EDA). Determination coefficients ($R^2$) of regression equations for dependent variables ranged from 0.8397 to 0.9801, and microwave power was observed to be more influential than extraction time in MAP. The maximal values of each dependent variable predicted at different extraction conditions of microwave power (W) and extraction time (min) were as follows; $6.76\%$ of total yield at 142.00 W and 4.36 min, 78.68 mg/g of total phenolics at 136.78 W and 4.40 min, 6.75 mg/g of total flavonoids at 159,69 W and 3.17 min, and $49.81\%$ of EDA at 133.87 W and 4.47 min, respectively. The superimposed contour maps for maximizing dependent variables illustrated the MAP conditions of 79 to 113 W in power and of 2.73 to 3.84 min in extraction time.

The process of alginate preparation was shortened with microwave pretreatment and hot water extraction without any other treatment. The yield of extracted alginate was very different according to raw material and microwave treatment conditions. The yield of extracted alginate from sea mustard was higher than sea tangle and increased with the temperature rise and time of microwave treatment. Optimum extraction conditions by microwave treatment were 90 min at $100^{\circ}C$ for the sea mustard and 120 min at $100^{\circ}C$ for the sea tangle. On the other hand, the solubility of the alginate from sea mustard was $69\%\~80\%$ and the viscosity were 8.7$\~$1.5 cps, respectively. The solubility and the viscosity of the sea tangle alginate was higher than the sea mustard to $77\~84\%$ and in the range of 8.9$\~$1.8 cps, respectively. The extraction temperature by hot water greatly influenced on the yield of alginate, but the solubility and viscosity was not affected by the hot water extraction. The molecular weight of alginate obtained through the extraction by $Na_2CO_3$ solution and the microwave pretreatment was 800 kDa, and in the range of 12$\~$45 kDa, respectively.
Background: Rare ginsenosides in Panax quinquefolius L. have strong bioactivities. The fact that it is hard to obtain large amounts of rare ginsenosides seriously restricts further research on these compounds. An easy, fast, and efficient method to obtain different kinds of rare ginsenosides simultaneously and to quantify each one precisely is urgently needed. Methods: Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) was used to extract nine kinds of rare ginsenosides from P. quinquefolius L. In this article, rare ginsenosides [20(S)-Rh1, 20(R)-Rh1, Rg6, F4, Rk3, 20(S)-Rg3, 20(R)-Rg3, Rk1, and Rg5] were identified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry. The quantity information of rare ginsenosides was analyzed by HPLC-UV at 203 nm. Results: The optimal conditions for MAE were using water as solvent with the material ratio of 1:40 (w/v) at a temperature of $145^{\circ}C$, and extracting for 15 min under microwave power of 1,600 W. Seven kinds of rare ginsenosides [20(S)-Rh1, 20(R)-Rh1, Rg6, F4, Rk3, Rk1, and Rg5] had high extraction yields, but those of 20(S)-Rg3 and 20(R)-Rg3 were lower. Compared with the conventional method, the extraction yields of the nine rare ginsenosides were significantly increased. Conclusion: The results indicate that rare ginsenosides can be extracted effectively by MAE from P. quinquefolius L. in a short time. Microwave radiation plays an important role in MAE. The probable generation process of rare ginsenosides is also discussed in the article. It will be meaningful for further investigation or application of rare ginsenosides.
Microwave-assisted extraction, which is known to rapidly extract target compounds from natural products, was monitored by response surface methodology (RSM) while extracting ginsenosides by using microwave extraction system (MES) equipped with closed vessels, and was confirmed on its extraction efficiency. On the whole, coefficients of determinations $(R^2)$ of the models on ginsenoside contents of extracts with various extraction conditions were above 0.83 (p<0.1). $Ginsenoside-Rb_2,\;-Rc,\;-Re\;and\;-Rg_1$ were maximized in $140^{\circ}C$ of extraction temperature and $50\~75\%$ range of ethanol concentration. Unknown compound peak on HPLC chromatogram observed at extraction temperature over $120^{\circ}C$, increased at the extraction temperature of $150^{\circ}C$. The extraction temperature of $ginsenoside-Rb_2$ and -Re increased from $129^{\circ}C\;to\;147^{\circ}C$ with including unknown compound, and $R^2$ of the models on ginsenoside contents of extracts increased with including unknown compound into ginsenoside $Rb_2$ and Re. Contents of unknown compound were minimized in $67.33\%$ of ethanol concentration, $99.34^{\circ}C$ of extraction temperature and 3.65 min of extraction time. Ginsenoside contents extracted by microwave system for 8 min showed a similar tendency to those of the current extraction method for 40 hrs.
This study investigated the antioxidant activities of extracts from Angelica dahurica roots after microwave-assisted extraction with different levels of energy (120, 240W) and extraction time (5, 10, 15 and 30 min). The highest extraction yield was 11.77 mg% in water at 240W for 30 min followed by 11.42 mg% in water at 120Wand 30 min. The highest total polyphenol contents was 32.36 mg/g in an ethanol extract, followed by 31.77mg/g in water extract at the same conditions of 240W, 30 min. The electron donating abilities both the ethanol extract obtained using 240W and 30 min and the water extract obtained employing 120W and 5min showed the highest values, 83.55% and 82.49% respectively at a concentration 1.0mg/mL. The highest superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity was 14.16% in ethanol extract at 120Wand 15min, followed by 13.22% in the water extract at 120W and 5 min. The best extraction yield and polyphenol content after microwave-assisted extraction were achieved with 240W and 30 min using water. The best condition for extraction of electron donating ability and SOD-like activity from A dahurica roots were 120W and 5 minutes using water.

The yield of oleoresin content and functionality of fresh garlic were compared according to varying extraction conditions by microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) and conventional extraction (CE) methods. When different extracting conditions were applied, there was no significant difference of extraction methods in the oleoresin content. However, in the case of the CE, the optimum extraction time was two hours, while the other was about five minutes which meant that the extraction time was shortened drastically. The electron donating abilities showed a similar level which was 64% by both methods, using water. And, in the case of ethanol extraction, it resulted 63% and 51% by CE and MAE, respectively. The nitrite scavenging effect diminished while pH was increasing and especially, in the case of pH 1.2, it showed a high elimination effect of more than 90%. There was no difference of extraction methods. The tyrosinase inhibitory effect was 47% and 60% by CE and MAE, respectively in the case of the water extract. The ethanol extract showed similar or a slight lower inhibition of 45% and 39%. The angiotensin I-converting enzyme inhibitory effect showed more powerful activity in the case of MAE extract than CE extract, but there was not an increase relating to reaction time of enzyme. Also, pyruvic acid content was $44.8\;and\;36.0{\mu}moles$ per one gram of a garlic by CE and MAE, respectively when water was used, and was $28.6\;and\;32.0{\mu}moles$ by CE and MAE when ethanol was used. Again, there was no big difference between CE and MAE methods.
