We evaluate and compare the power generating characteristics of the anode supported SOFCs which have been fabricated from KIST and FZ-Julich in Germany. The performance and electrochemical property of each unit cell was characterized at the temperature range of $650-850^{\circ}C$ under same operating conditions and its microstructural property was thoroughly investigated via SEM after the performance test. According to the investigation, KIST- and FZJ SOFC showed different power generating characteristics in their temperature dependances due to their different design of electrode microstructure, especially the cathode microstructure. FZJ SOFC showed better performance at high temperature while showed lower performance at lower temperature. From the investigation about the correlation between microstructure and electrochemical property, we found that the superior performance of FZJ SOFC at high temperature was mainly due to its lower cathodic polarization resistance whereas better performance of KIST SOFC at lower temperature was mostly attributed to the lower ohmic resistance.
The microstructure of Ni-YSZ composite as an anode of SOFC was investigated as a function of Ni content(10-70 vol%) in order to examine the correlation between microstructural-and electrical property. Image analysis based on quantitative microscopy theory was performed to quantify the microstructural property. We could get the informations about the size and distribution, contiguity and interfacial area of each phase or between the phases from the image analysis. According to the image analysis, contiguity between the same phae was mainly dependent on the amount of the phase while the contiguity between different phases was additionally influenced by the microstructural changes, especailly by the coarsening of the Ni phase. The whole length of pores perimeter was increased as Ni content increased, which indicated the overall microstructural evolution was mostly related with the coarsening of Ni phase. Ni-Ni interfacial area was also gradually increased as Ni content increased but controlled by pore phase at low Ni content region and by YSZ phase at intermediate Ni content region. These quantified microstructural properties were used to characterize the electrical properties of Ni-YSZ composite.

The efficiency of complex slurry preparation route for developing the high performance SiC matrix of RS-SiCf/SiC composites has been investigated. The green bodies for RS-SiC materials prior to the infiltration of nw/ten silicon were prepared with various C/SiC complex matrix slurries, which associated with both different sizes of starting SiC particles and blending ratios of starting SiC and carbon particles. The characterization of RS-SiC materials was examined by means of SEM, TEM, EDS and three point bending test. Based on the mechanical property-microstructure correlation, process optimization methodology is also discussed. The flexural strength of RS-SiC materials greatly depended on the content of residual Si. The decrease of starting SiC particle size in the C/SiC complex slurry was effective for improving the flexural strength of RS-SiC materials.
The microstructure and the mechanical properties of RS-SiC and RS-$SiC_f/SiC$ materials have been investigated in conjunction with the content of residual silicon and porosity. The mechanical properties of RS-SiC materials suffered from the thermal exposure were also examined. RS-SiC based materials bave been fabricated using the complex matrix slurry with different composition ratios of SiC and C panicles. The characterization of RS-SiC based materials was investigated by means of SEM, EDS ~d three point bending test. Based on the mechanical property-microstructure correlation, the high temperature applicability of RS-SiC based materials was discussed.

The mechanical properties of $SiC_f/SiC$ composites reinforced with continuous SiC fiber have been investigated in conjunction with the detailed analysis of their microstructures. Especially, the effect of test temperature on the characterization of $SiC_f/SiC$ composites was examined. In this composite system, a braiding Hi-Nicalon SiC fibric was selected as a reinforcement. $SiC_f/SiC$ composites have been fabricated by the reaction sintering process, using the complex matrix slurry with a constant composition ratio of SiC and C particles. The characterization of $RS-SiC_f/SiC$ composites was investigated by means of SEM, EDS and three point bending test. Based on the mechanical property-microstructure correlation, the high temperature applicability of $RS-SiC_f/SiC$ composites was discussed.

The efficiency of complex slurry preparation route for developing the high performance SiC matrix of $RS-SiC_{f}/SiC$ composites has been investigated. The green bodies for RS-SiC materials prior to the infiltration of molten silicon were prepared with various C/SiC complex slurries, which associated with both the sizes of starting SiC particles and the blending conditions of starting SiC and C particles. The characterization of Rs-SiC materials was examined by means of SEM, EDS and three point bending test. Based on the mechanical property-microstructure correlation, the process optimization is also discussed. The flexural strength of Rs-SiC materials greatly depended on the content of residual Si. The effect of intercritical annealing temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Fe-9Mn-0.2C-3Al-0.5Si medium manganese steels containing Cu and Ni is investigated in this study. Six kinds of medium manganese steels are fabricated by varying the chemical composition and intercritical annealing temperature. Hardness and tensile tests are performed to examine the correlation of microstructure and mechanical properties for the intercritical annealed medium manganese steels containing Cu and Ni. The microstructures of all the steels are composed mostly of lath ferrite, reverted austenite and cementite, regardless of annealing temperature. The room-temperature tensile test results show that the yield and tensile strengths decrease with increasing intercritical annealing temperature due to higher volume fraction and larger thickness of reverted austenite. On the other hand, total and uniform elongations, and strain hardening exponent increase due to higher dislocation density because transformation-induced plasticity is promoted with increasing annealing temperature by reduction in reverted austenite stability.
The correlation between NiO-YSZ microstructure and its electrical property used for SOFC anode was critically evaluated with image processing and direct measurement techniques. These innovative processing techniques were employed to quantify the contiguity of the anode constituent phase. The calculated contiguities were then correlated with electrical conductivity attained from 4-probe DC method. This investigation described that contiguity of nickel oxide phases of an anode has a linear relationship with its electrical conductivity. We observed that the contiguity of NiO increased from 0.18 to 0.50 then electrical conductivity attained was significantly increased from 520 S/cm to 1468 S/cm at $900^{\circ}C$.

In this study, Liquid Phase Sintered SiC (LPS-SiC) was fabricated by hot pressing method with $\beta$-SiC powder whose a particle size is 30nm and less on the average in argon condition at 1780 and $1800^{\circ}C$ under 20MPa. Alumina ($Al_2O_3$), yttria ($Y_2O_3$) and silica ($SiO_2$) were used for sintering additives. To investigate effects of particle-size and temperature on $SiO_2$, LPS-SiC was fixed $Al_2O_3$, $Y_2O_3$ and then particle-size of $SiO_2$ were changed as two kinds. The system of particle-size and temperature on sintering additives which affects a property of sintering os well os the influence depending on particle-size and temperature of sintering additives were investigated by measurement of sintering properties. Such as measurement of sintering density, vikers hardness and observing of microstructure were investigated to make sure of the optimum condition which is about matrix of $SiC_f/SiC$ composites. Base on the composition of sintering additives, microstructure and sintering property correlation, the effect of particle-size of sintering additives are discussed. An experimental method to investigate the dynamic characteristics of bums in extreme environmental condition is established.
For the good combination of high-temperature strength, toughness and creep property, $9-12\%$ chromium steels are often used for gas turbine compressors, steam turbine rotors, blade and casing. In this study, the correlation of microstructural evolution and mechanical properties was investigated fur the specimens heat-treated at 600, 650 and $700^{\circ}C$ for 1000, 3000 and 5000 hrs. The microstructure of as-received specimen was tempered martensite with a high dislocation density, small sub-grains and fine secondary phase such as $M_23C_6$. Aging for long-time at high temperature caused the growth of martensite lath and the decrease of dislocation density resulting in the decrease in strength. However, the evolution of secondary phases had influence on hardness, yield strength and impact property. In the group A specimen aged at $600^{\circ}C\;and\;650^{\circ}C$, Laves phase was observed. The Laves phase caused the increase of the hardness and the decrease of the impact property. In addition, the abrupt growth of secondary phases caused decrease of the impact property in both A and B group specimens.
