  • The densification process during liquid-phase sintering was simulated by Monte Carlo simulation. The Potts model, which had been applied to coarsening during liquid-phase sintering, was modified to include vapor particles. The results of two- and threedimensional simulations showed a temporal decrease in porosity, in other words, densification, and an increase in the average size of pores. The results also showed growth of solid grains and the effect of wetting angle on microstructure.

  • Using the two-dimensional Wulff plot, the equilibrium shape of a sapphire crystal was investigated as a function of surface energy anisotropy. Depending on the relative values of surface energy for various facet planes, the projected shape of equilibrium sapphire was determined to be rectangle, parallelogram, hexagon or octagon. The results are compared with the experimentally observed shapes of internal cavities of submicron range in sapphire single crystals.

  • Formation of pores in melt processed ceramics oxides and its effect on the microstructure were studied. Spherical Pores with a size of a few tens of microns were formed due to the evolution of oxygen gas during melting of a oxide. The liquid pockets were converted into sperical oxide regions with a lower oxide density through the peritectic reaction during subsequent fabrication.

  • The influence of different microstructures and compositional variations on hydrogen absorption by pure Pd, and $Pd_{0.9}Rh_{0.1}$ alloy has been examined from changes in the hydrogen isotherms. The dilute phase solubilities and the plateau pressures are affected by differences in microstructures and compositional variations but the hydrogen capacities at relatively high hydrogen pressures are not affected except for the alloy form which has some phase separation.

  • Four designed $Nb_{3}$Sn superconductors have been fabricated in order to investigate the effect of pre-heat treatment for internal tin process. 3 types of sub-elements and 2 types of Sn reservers were fabricated. Diffusion of Sn is better in the strand divided Sn equally than in the strand had one large Sn reserver during pre heat-treatment.
