This research investigates microstructures and fatigue properties of the weldments of 6005A aluminum alloy developed for railroad vehicles. The samples were extruded into a truss structure and welded together using the gas metal arc welding process. The extruded sample showed a wide variation in grain size, possibly due to the frictional heating as well as the inghomogeneous metal flow in the extrusion die. The mechanical properties of the samples were affected by the mirocstructures. The fatigue strength of the welded structure was found to decrease significantly from that of the base metal. It was found that the fatigue characteristics of the welded structure were determined by the microstructure of the parent metal as well as weld defects such as porosities and the liquation cracks.

A model of plastic deformation of the shape memory alloys which describes dislocation slip at the microlevel is developed. A condition similar to the Schmid law was adopted for the determination of dislocation slip onset. A description of the interaction of plastic deformation and martensitic transformations by taking into account the densities of deformation defects is proposed. It is shown that the model can correctly describe the effect of plastic strain on the shape memory effect. The proposed model is also capable of describing the two-way shape memory effect.

Microscopic defects within the microstructure of hardened cement paste are the main source of weakness in concrete. As a solution, nano-graphene oxide (GO) can be employed to improve the cement paste microstructure. However, there is a number of disadvantages, e.g., fluidity reduction and non-uniform dispersion. The present study sought to modify GO by fabricating a copolymer (PSGO) in a novel process to exploit the advantages of nano-GO while minimizing its disadvantages. Using 0.03wt% copolymerled to 38.8% higher tensile strength, 29.3% higher compressive strength and 25% higher workability. The SEM images revealed that GO and modified GO enhanced concrete by secondary hydration and bonding with C-S-H, creating a firm, integrated, and foil-like structure, and reducing the crack size and depth.

The object of this study is to evaluate and discriminate nondestructively the dislocation substructures of Cu and Cu-Zn alloy subjected to the low-cycle-fatigue. The ultrasonic wave velocity, electrical resistivity and positron annhilation lifetime(PAL) were measured to the nondestructive testing. Cyclic fatigue test of Cu and Cu-Zn alloy with much different stacking fault energies was conducted and the correlations between dislocation behavior and nondestructive parameters were studied. Dislocation cell substructure was developed in Cu, while planar array of dislocation structure was developed in Cu-35Zn alloy only increasing dislocation density with fatigue cycles. Decrease in ultrasonic wave velocity, increase in electrical resistivity and PAL were shown because of the development of lattice defects, dislocations and vacancies, by cyclic fatigue at room temperature. In contrast to Cu-Zn alloy of the planar-array dislocation substructure showing continuous changes in the nondestructive parameters, it does not make any noticeable changes in the nondestructive parameters after the evolution of dislocation cell substructure in Cu.
We studied the microstructural evolution of ZrTM-Al (TM=Nb and Ti) alloy films, MR and electrical properties of the MTJ with $ZrTM-AlO_x$ barrier as a function of Zr/TM ratio. We observed that the ternary-oxide barrier reduced the TMR ratio due mainly to the structural defects such as the surface roughness. The change in TMR ratio and $V_h$ with Zr/TM ratio exactly corresponds to the systematic changes in the microstructural variation. Although the MTJ with ternary oxide reduced the TMR and the electrical stabilities, the junction resistances decreased as the Ti and Nb concentration increased due to the band-gap reduction caused by the formation of extra bands
We investigated the composition dependence of the tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) behavior and the stability of the magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with TiAlOx barrier and the microstructural evolution of TiAl alloy films. The TMR ratio increased up to $49\%$ at $5.33\;at\%$ Ti. In addition, a significant tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) value of $20\%$ was maintained after annealing at $450^{\circ}C$, and the breakdown voltage ($V_B$) of and 1.35 V were obtained in the MTJ with $5.33\;at\%$ Ti-alloyed AlOx barrier. These results were closely related to the enhanced quality of the barrier material microstructure in the pre-oxidation state. Ti alloying enhanced the barrier/electrode interface uniformity and reduced microstructural defects. These structural improvements enhanced not only the TMR effect but also the thermal and electrical stability of the MTJs.
Purpose: This study compared the surface hardness (Vickers) and microstructural characteristics between a type IV stone with and without die hardening treatment, a polyurethane die material. Methods: Materials used were a type IV stone(MG Crystal Rock), two die hardeners (Hardening bath, Epox-it), and a polyurethane resin material(Polyluck). Six specimens per group were prepared according to manufacturer's directions. The prepared specimens were tested by means of hardness test, one-way ANOVA analysis, scanning electron microscopic(SEM) observations and energy dispersive spectroscopic(EDS) analysis. Results: In the hardness test and its statistical analysis, there was no significant difference in the surface hardness between a type IV stone and type IV stone with die hardener coating, type IV stone mixed with an epoxy like material instead of water. In contrast, polyurethane resin material exhibited significantly greater surface hardness than other specimen groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: By considering the results of the hardness test, SEM observations and EDS analysis, although the die hardeners on type IV stone did not show remarkable improvement in surface hardness, the die hardener coating on the surface of type IV stone material did show decrease of microporous and improvement of surface defects.

GaN epilayers deposited by the OMVPE method on sapphires with 3 different surface orientations were investigated by TEM and their difference in mucrostructure were compared with each other. GaN epilayers were grown on the all three kinds of sapphire substrates; however, the best interfacial state and crystallinity were observed in the specimen using a {0001} substrate The density of defects in GaN epilayers on {0001} substrates was also less than others. No buffer layer was found at the interfaces of all the specimens; however, it was observed that the region which shows lattice distortion at the interface was only a few nonameter wide. Accordingly, TEM investigation revealed that GaN epilayers having some internal defects could be grown on sapphire {1120} and {1102} planes without a buffer layer, and the hetero-epitaxial GaN films were obtained from the specimen using {0001} substrates with the microstructural point of view.

The microstructures of a Tl$_{0.8}Pb_{0.2}Bi_{0.2}Sr_{1.6}Ca_2Cu_3O_{9+{\delta}}$/Ag tape (tape I ) with J$_c$ of 17,600 A/cm$^2$ at 77 K and 0 T and three Tl$_{0.8}Pb_{0.2}Bi_{0.2}Sr_{1.8}Ba_{0.2}Ca_{2.2}Cu_3O_{9+{\delta}}$/Ag tapes with J$_c$'s of 9,300 (tape II), 16,700 (tape III) and 25,200 A/cm$^2$ (tape IV)prepared using the powder-in-tube method and an in-situ reaction method, were investigated using scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and compared each other. ln the tape preparation, an intermediate rolling process was incorporated during final heat-treatment for the last tape, but not for the rest of the tapes. The microstructural analysis revealed clear differences in grain-texturing, crystallographic defects and impurity phases, depending on the chemical composition of the tape. Tendency of directional grain-alignment increased in an order of tapes I, II III and IV. In tape IV, T1-1223 grains are textured, at least in local regions. In crystallographic defects, while stacking faults were prevalent in the former composition, dislocations and voids were frequently observed in the latter. Also impurity phases were appeared to be more abundant in the former than in the latter. The relationship between 1,and the microstructure in the tapes was attempted to explain in a term of grain-linking.
Mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) consist of a work platform, extending structure, and chassis, and are used to move persons to working positions. MEWPs are useful but are composed of pieces of equipment, and accidents do occur owing to equipment defects. Among these defects, accidents caused by the fracture of bolts fixed to the extension structure and swing system are increasing. This paper presents a failure analysis of the fixing bolts of MEWP. Standard procedure for failure analysis was employed in this investigation. Visual inspection, chemical analysis, tensile strength measurement, microstructural characterization, fractography analysis by Optical Microscope(OM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM), and finite element analysis (FEA) were used to analyze the failure of the fixing bolts. Using this failure analysis approach, we found the root cause of failure and proposed a means for solving this type of failure in the future. First, the chemical composition of the fixing bolt is obtained by a spectroscopy chemical analysis method, which determined that the chemical composition matched the required standard. The tensile test showed that the tensile and yield strengths were within the required capacity. The stress analysis was carried out at five different boom angles, and it was determined that the fixing bolt of MEWP can withstand the loads at all the boom angles. The outcomes of the fatigue analysis revealed that the fixing bolt fails before reaching the design requirements. The results of the fatigue analysis showed primarily that the failure of the fixing bolt was due to fatigue. A visual inspection of the fractured section of the fixing bolt also confirmed the fatigue failure. We propose a method to prevent failure of the fixing bolt of the MEWP from four different standpoints: the manufacturer, safety certification authority, safety inspection agency, and owner.
