  • A new data line reduction driving method was developed for high pixel density LCoS microdisplays. Its pixel structures and its corresponding gate line waveform were proposed, too. This idea can fulfill the increasing demand for higher resolution LCoS. In this method, no additional AC power is dissipated, and no more horizontal line time is needed. So this method can be applied to the high resolution microdisplay devices. It prefers being applied to the reflective liquid crystal on silicon microdisplays because of the pixel structure asymmetry and PMOS transistor switches used.

  • We report the recent reliability test results of SpatiaLight's liquid crystal on Silicon (LCOS) microdisplays. Two different types of reliability tests have been performed: 1) thermal and 2) thermal with high intensity UV light. Various important device parameters were regularly monitored including the contrast ratio, color uniformity, and switching time. The test data shows that there are no degradations that fail the pass criteria. Lifetime estimations are given from the test data.

  • Design and manufacturing process of a full color LED microdislay fabricated by standard CMOS technology and containing an array of aluminum / nanostructured porous silicon reverse biased light emitting Schottky diodes will be discussed. Being of a solid state construction, this microdisplays are cost-effective, thin and light in weight due to very simple device architecture. Its benefits include also super high resolution, wide viewing angles, fast response time and wide operating temperature range. The advantages of full integration of an LED-array and driving circuitry onto a Si-chip will be also discussed.

  • In today's mobile world, small and lightweight information systems are becoming increasingly important. Microdisplays are the base for several near-to-eye display devices. The addition of an integrated image sensor significantly boosts the range of applications. This paper describes the base-building block for these systems: the bidirectional organic light-emitting diode microdisplay. A small and lightweight optic design, an eye-tracking algorithm, and interaction concepts are also presented.

  • In this study, we report simulation results of single-panel LCOS (liquid crystal on silicon). Reflective LCOS microdisplays are widely used in various projection and near-eye application. For one panel system, liquid crystal response time is an important variable. The panel must switch fast enough to support the display of Field color sequential with high field rates. In order to have fast response and good contrast, a vertical alignment (VA) cell was used in this study. With suitable selection on LC parameters like temperature, viscosity, elastic constant and birefringence, it is possible to get response time of around 2ms from a 2.0 um-thick vertical alignment cell. This result also indicates an ease of production control on 2.0 um cells than 1.0 um cells.

  • We have studied how rubbing direction affects generation of disclination line in transmissive microdisplay for $90^{\circ}$ twisted nematic (TN) mode with pixel size of $22.2{\mu}m$. The rubbing direction of bottom substrate is changed from $0^{\circ}$ to $-135^{\circ}$ with a decrease step of $45^{\circ}$, and the results show that the generation regions of the disclination line are of a smallest size in $-135^{\circ}$ direction. The results were the same although the pixel size decreased. Consequently, the use of proper rubbing direction of liquid crystal can help overcome the problems of low aperture ratio and low contrast ratio in transmissive-type microdisplays. In addition, the pretilt angle of initial liquid crystal is found to make an important contribution to generation of the disclination line.

  • We have studied how surface pretilt angle affects generation of disclination line in liquid-crystal-on silicon cells for 45$^{\circ}$-twisted nematic (TN) and vertical alignment (VA) modes with pixel size of 15$\mu\textrm{m}$. Our studies show that when the pretilt angle is increased from 0$^{\circ}$to 3$^{\circ}$ in the 45$^{\circ}$-TN cell, the disclination line at left side of on-pixel becomes weak and is well suppressed with $\theta$$\_$p/=3$^{\circ}$ although the pixel size Is decreased. In the VA cell, when the pretilt angle is decreased from 89$^{\circ}$ to 86$^{\circ}$, the disclination line at right side of the on-pixel is suppressed well and even for a smaller pixel size, it does not exist when $\theta$$\_$p/=86$^{\circ}$. The results inform that the pretilt angle strongly affects the image quality of microdisplays.
