  • Over the last decade sophisticated and powerful microcapillary HPLC for proteomic analysis have been developed increasingly and interfaced with high resolution tandem mass spectrometers. Separation prior to mass spectrometric (MS) analysis removes impurities, and concentrates analytes in the narrow elution peaks, resulting in increased sensitivity of MS analysis. This review will focus on the recent advances of on-line highperformance separation techniques based on microfluidic chips for complex proteomic analysis.

  • Acetone sensitized photoadditions of isopropanol to (5R)-5-menthyloxy-2-(5H)-furanone were investigated in two different microflow reactor systems. Setup A employed a commercially available glass reactor under a UVB-panel. Setup B utilized a FEP microcapillary wrapped tightly around a Pyrex cylinder with a single UVB fluorescent tube at its center. The reactions under flow conditions were subsequently compared to analogue reactions conducted in a batch chamber reactor. Overall, the microflow systems gave faster conversions and higher isolated yields. The flexible microcapillary setup, however, showed the best performance and promise in terms of future scale-up and reactor optimization.

  • In some previous studies, the effect of the microcapillary hole structure in the front dielectric layer was introduced. There have not yet been any report, however, on the detailed study on the discharge characteristics of the hole type, and on the optimization of the microscale hole size. In this study, the discharge characteristics of the microscale hole types in the front dielectric layer in plasma display panels were investigated through plasma numerical simulation. The numerical analysis discussed in this work may shed more light on the discharge mechanism. The modification of the structure of microscale holes is expected to improve the driving voltage and luminance, which may have been due to more energetically charged particles and Xe-excited species, which may in turn have been due to an expanded sheath electric field in the vicinity of the microholes.

  • A 7 year-old male Maltese dog was referred to Seoul National University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital with a recurrent mass in the right scapular region. The patient had no pains associated with the mass. On aspiration cytology, the neoplastic mass is composed of clusters of mature adipocytes with large lipid vacuoles, intermixed with frequent microcapillary vessels which is characteristic of lipoma. At surgery, the mass was infiltrated into the surrounding muscles and therefore the complete resection of the mass was difficult. Histologically, the mass was diagnosed as infiltrative lipoma. The patient has no recurrent signs 8 months after surgery.

  • In this study, a microcapillary pumped loop (MCPL) that can be used as a cooling device for small electronic and telecommunications equipment has been developed. For thin devices such as an MCPL, securing a vapor flow space is a critical issue for enhancing the thermal performance. In this letter, such enhancement in thermal performance was accomplished by eliminating condensed droplets from the vapor line. By fabricating the grooves in the vapor line to eliminate droplets, a decrease in thermal resistance of about 63.7% was achieved.

  • Recently, energy security is one of the most important world-wide issues. Biodiesel derived from microalgae has received much attention as a renewable bioenergy. The green colonial alga, $Botryococcus$ $braunii$, is characterized by the ability to produce and accumulate large amounts of hydrocarbons and fatty acids. In this study, we have isolated 5 strains of $B.$ $braunii$ from Korean surface waters using a microcapillary-pipetting method and identified them by morphological features and phylogenetic analysis of the 18S rRNA gene. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that 5 strains of $B.$ $braunii$ are placed in the class of Trebouxiophyceae, and strains belong to race A type producing hydrocarbons which are alkadienes and alkatrienes. In addition, we need further studies to find out optimal growth conditions for producing biodiesel.

  • Although Toxoplasma gondii infection generally shows subclinical courses in adults, it may have severe pathologic effects on the fetus. For a survey of toxoplasmosis in Shahr-e-Rey area, south of Tehran, Iran, we conducted a serological study on 1,187 general populations using indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test. In this cross sectional study, cases were selected randomly by a local primary health care (PHC) system. Blood samples were collected in microcapillary tubes and sera were examined by IFA after centrifugation. It has been shown that 68.3% of cases in all age groups had IFA titer of 1:10 and higher, which we consider as positive cases, and the rate for 1:400 or over was 30.2%. There was meaningful correlation between anti-Toxoplasma antibody titers and age, sex, and occupation of subjected people (P < 0.05%). The incidence was higher in females and highest in the children age group (10-14 years old). The present study demonstrates high prevalence of Toxoplasma infection among the people in south of Tehran, Iran.

  • We have developed the in situ hybridization(ISH) technique for rapid diagnosis of canine distemper(CD) which is the major infectious disease in dogs. In our experiment, we rapidly detected distribution of the specific canine distemper viral genome without disrupting morphology of tissues or cells. Two oligonucleotide probes for ISH were synthesized chemically and labelled 5' end with nonisotopic biotin by DNA synthesizer. The whole procedures of ISH was completed within 1~2 hours using the Microcapillary action system. On histological study, typical cytoplasmic or intranuclear inclusion bodies were observed in the trachea, bronchiole, brain, and urinary bladder with the presence of prominent red positive signals on ISH, indicating specific CDV genome from the paraffin-embedded tissues of infected 13 cases. The results showed ISH can be used as a rapid and effective diagnostic method for diagnosis of CD.

  • Complete blood cell count(CBC) is a technique that counts leukocytes for each type of blood cell being analyzed. The principle is that laser is incident to ex vivo flowing leukocytes in a microcapillary tube and scattered light occurs by laser and leukocytes. By collecting the scattered light, we can count the types of cells because different cells generate different light-scattering patterns. However, the technique has an intrinsic limitation, scattering pattern is shown in a wide range region in the resulting, which makes it difficult to accurate analyze and use fluorescent dyes. To overcome this limitation, a new design of CBC with a dual laser, which irradiates with orthogonal angles for collecting quad-scattering information was proposed. Before development, the scattering difference depending on wavelength must be investigated to only catch up to the scattered signal by angles. Some studies, which focused on simple particles, have been conducted to theoretically and experimentally investigate different scatterings by wavelength. In this study, we propose an optical system for measuring scattered light and investigate a complex particle. As a result, the green laser made strong scattering signals in both the forward and side direction: 10% and 30%, respectively.

  • Objective: To evaluate the effects of an electric toothbrush with vibrational frequencies of 125 Hz and 150 Hz on the orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) rate and the production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Methods: Out of thirty patients (aged 18-25 years; 16 females and 14 males), ten patients each formed Group A and B, who used electric toothbrushes with 125 Hz and 150 Hz vibrations, respectively. The remaining ten patients (Group C) served as the control group and did not use electric toothbrushes. The rate of OTM and levels of PGE2 using microcapillary pipettes were calculated before the start of retraction (T0), on the 30th day (T1), on the 60th day (T2), and on the 90th day (T3) from the start of retraction in all the groups. Results: There was a statistically significant difference in the mean OTM values and PGE2 levels in all three groups at different time intervals, with the maximum difference seen in Group B compared to Group A and least in Group C at T1, T2 and T3. Conclusions: The rate of OTM and levels of PGE2 were highest in patients who used an electric toothbrush with 150 Hz mechanical vibration compared to those who used an electric toothbrush with 125 Hz mechanical vibration and least in patients who did not use an electric toothbrush. Mechanical vibration led to an increase in the PGE2 levels and accelerated the OTM.
